Quebec artist shows angels at Shanghai Expo

Quebec artist David Martel is among the artists who are showing off their work at the World Expo, which opened this weekend in Shanghai.

The opportunity is a coup for the Sherbrooke artist, who is displaying two giant monoliths painted on Chinese red marble.

The works are part of his "peace tour" for which Martel has painted works of art on types of rock that are typical to different sacred sites around the world.

Martel said he had hoped to display the work, which features giant blue-coloured angels, during the Beijing Olympics in 2008. But, he said he didn't have enough money to get there before last September.

"I had to paint them very fast because I didn't have too much time in Shanghai," said Martel. "So, each monolith took me like a day and a half," said Martel.

The marble rock is an important part of Chinese culture, said Martel, who researched the country's mythology before painting the monoliths.

The angels will be exhibited in Shanghai until the end of October.
