20 kg cocaine seized on B.C. highway

Last Updated: Monday, June 21, 2010 /9:47 PM PT : Abbotsford police say they seized 20 kilograms of cocaine after pulling over a vehicle on the Trans-Canada Highway.

At about 2:45 p.m. PT on Monday, the Abbotsford police department's gang unit, with the assistance of several other officers, conducted a vehicle stop on the highway near Whatcom Road, Const. Ian MacDonald said in a release.

A 28-year-old Abbotsford man was arrested and a search of the vehicle turned up the cocaine, with an estimated street value of more than $1 million, MacDonald said.

The bust was a product of the close monitoring of gangs in the city, said MacDonald.

"We are well aware of their connections, their drug lines, and their operations and the people they are hiring to do their work," he said. "We knew today they would be moving a large amount of cocaine and we intercepted that move."

Police said the man, whose name has not been released, is known to them.

He remains in custody and will face drug charges.

Abbotsford is about 65 kilometres east of Vancouver.
