In Christoph Schaub’s HAPPY NEW YEAR, men and women of various ages and social backgrounds are caught between the annual balance sheet and a strong compulsion to party. As the cold night wears on, the fireworks move from loud blasts on the ground through sparkling skyward displays to what happens between humans in bed. In the pic's most compelling story, an elegant, abandoned wife (Denise Virieux) gets it on with a handsome slacker cabbie (Nils Althaus). Meanwhile, an elderly couple (Jorg Schneider, Irene Fritschi) bicker and reconcile; a sullen teen (Annina Euling) ashamed of her alcoholic mother (Katharina von Bock) meets a new guy (Joel Basman); a loner (Bruno Cathomas) copes with company he can't get rid of (Lou Haltinner); and two single police officers (Johanna Bantzer, Pascal Holzer) take a chance on each other.
