Police in southern Ontario were asking for the public's help Wednesday as they continued to search for a man who bought 1,625 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, a chemical fertilizer that can be used as a key ingredient in bomb-making.

The RCMP have confirmed the man purchased 65 25-kilogram bags of the fertilizer on May 26 at a store in Lincoln, Ont., near St. Catharines in the Niagara region.

Insp. Gord Sneddon of the Integrated Security Unit said at a news conference on Wednesday that the man told the farm-supply store he was buying the agricultural fertilizer for a regular customer.

Sneddon said that was a lie.

Police also said it appears proper procedures were not followed in the sale and the farm supplier, Vineland Growers' Co-operative Ltd., did not get the man's identification.

Police said they have no evidence of any link between the purchase and this month's G20 summit in Toronto, but that they are worried about the missing fertilizer.

Buyer had minivan and flatbed trailer

The man is described as being between 5-6 and 5-8 with a short, stocky build and brown unkempt hair. He is believed to be between 50 and 60 years old, with a very strong accent, possibly of European descent. He is missing two fingers on his right hand and walks with a slight limp.

Police are asking for the public's help in identifying this man.

He left the store pulling a flatbed trailer with an older model maroon or red minivan, police say.

Police are asking people who have any further information to call them at 905-688-4111 ext. 4208 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The ammonium nitrate purchase comes as police and the military begin tightening security because of the upcoming G8 and G20 summits in Huntsville, Ont., and in Toronto.

Amendments to Canada's Explosives Act passed in 2008 require a vendor of ammonium nitrate to record the purchases and who bought the fertilizer, and to alert police if they think there is something suspicious about a purchase.

U.S. bomber Timothy McVeigh used ammonium nitrate to blow up a government building in Oklahoma City in 1995 and kill 168 people.

The moncitizenship is the new Canadian governmental task. The diplomatic lines of Republics of Yemen and Poland are non grata with their masks. M.T. Al-Mansouri

Human Rights

Shocking is the depravity of a human's own right
Defeat only befalls whoever can't for theirs fight
Why should any one thwart another's endeavor?
Planting discredit in his heart and mind for ever

Fairness and justice are basic pillars in any religion

By them a predator would turn into a peace pigeon
All humans come into existence with the same cry
They all live on the same earth, and under one sky

God Almighty creates them as human equal beings

Yet, they grow up to develop very different feelings
Some become shepherds and abuse the poor sheep
Others are bloodthirsty; and see human lives cheap

When fate is reversed; the predator becomes a prey

Only then he'd realize there is God he did not obey

Just a little word to announce that on June 6, 2010 all things went well. I started the Peace event with St. Francis of Asissi’s prayer, and then did along with Eric a bilingual speech, which we shared with the little audience.

I gave the French version to Eric, and I did spontaneously the English version. During the speech which I composed through the Heaven inspiration and which we shared it with many people in Canada and abroad. J. of N. reminded people the main and essential AFM of Peace goal is to let people know, if we who have the least talents were able to make it and accomplish this little Peace mission; then, everyone on earth is able too; even, beyond our ability and limited talents.

After the speech, we have introduced the film: Jeannette de Nazareth. Just before this, J. of N. spoke out about the AFM of Peace mission: to reclaim God’s place #1, and place money and materialism at the end of the list and to be in service to always and at all time be used to lift up God and humanity. As, unfortunately, due to fear, intimidation, and silence of many, money is taking more importance and is taking priority over God and humanity.

What is happening is unethical, immoral, and totally wrong! Just before rolling the film, for a warm up, J. of N. decided to dance a Spanish/Andalos beautiful melody with a wrapped up banded foot.

Jeannette of Nazareth chose this date (June 6, 2010) in memory to the six-day war which broke up between Israel and the surrounded Arab countries on June 5th 1967 which lasted for six hell long days and ended on June 10 of the same year. (J. of N. was then in Nazareth. She was very terrified and traumatized by witnessing this evil war seeing two races coming from several countries; yet, coming from same Father (Abraham, please ask for a Tape of one hour interview with J. of N. at O. U. Radio Station conducted in 2002.

This war which took the lives of Jewish and Arab innocent victims in a bloodshed battle all for one goal: materialism and landmark. This was the turning point in J. of N. life where she understood for the first time the full meaning of the evil war boosted by hatred one nation against another. From this point on, Jeannette refusing to take side, she decided in her heart to search for means of true Peace starting with prayers in defense to God and the life of humanity.

J. of N. witnessed a few days after her departure from the Holy land, another bloodshed war in the fall of 1973. All her feelings were repressed till the sad disastrous event of Sept. 11, 2001; when she woke up to herself, and decided never to stay quiet anymore, but to seek avenues in search for Love and Peace on earth. Right after this war, Jeannette escaped from Nazareth heading back to Jerusalem to seek security and Peace at Hospice St. Vincent de Paul ruled and managed by the Daughters of Charity/ les Filles de la Charité). During this evil war which started by several Arab countries, Israel due to its way advanced war equipments ‘snatched’ many kilometers of land form Jordan (Occupied territories & Gaza), Syria (Golan), Egypt (Sinai/Suez Canal), south of Lebanon (1). For, more information on this topic and sad historical war, you may do a research on the net.

The audience was a small number as usual; yet, they were all and everyone faithful people to this mission who I cherish everyone very much. They all belong to a non-privileged sector of the society as Jeannette and Eric are too.

Jesus was attracted also to such simple big hearted sweet people. For Jesus, greatness is never measured by money and wealth; but rather, by the amount of love one has in his/her heart. Over the nine years of commitment to AFM of Peace and its foundation by J. of N., I got very close to everyone of my audience. Every one of them is very special and as precious in my eyes as for Eric too.

Over the years, we became very good friends, sisters and brothers. There was time when we gave moral support even financial support to a few; while other time, when J. of N. was desperately broke, surprisingly, in their turn without any expectation on my part, they were there for me.

For, God provides and protects His beloved children day and night year after year everlastingly at all seasons. These beautiful individuals whose faith in God is sturdy and unshakable, I consider them Peace Makers/Ambassadors of Peace.

From the bottom of my heart, I say out loud today thank you to everyone who was there for me at time of difficulty to pull me up temporarily, inspired by heaven, from the misery. Glory to God in everything we do, and Peace be on earth as it is in Heaven to all who love Him! Amen!

May Joy and Peace Reign in the Heart

of all Humanity in its diversity now and forever!

P.S. Due to the aging and less energy and health problems, J. of N. Decided not to rent any hall anymore except for urgent matters once a year at the most. Nevertheless, she will do receptions and Peace events in her own residence instead as she did in the past too.

(1) The Six Day War broke out on June 5, 1967, following three weeks of tension which began on May 15, 1967 when it became known that Egypt had concentrated large-scale forces in the Sinai peninsula. Egypt's force buildup in the Sinai was accompanied by other serious steps: the United Nations Emergency Force stationed on the border between Egypt and Israel and Sharm el-Sheikh in 1957 and which had provided an actual separation between the countries was evacuated on May 19 upon the demands of the Egyptian president at the time, Gamal Abdel-Nasser; the Egyptian navy blocked the Straits of Tiran, located at the end of the Gulf of Eilat, on the night of May 22-23, 1967, preventing the passage of any Israeli vessels; and on May 30, 1967, Jordan joined the Egyptian-Syrian military alliance of 1966 and placed its army on both sides of the Jordan river under Egyptian command. Iraq followed suit. It agreed to send reinforcement and issued a warning order to two brigades: Contingents arrived from other Arab countries including Algeria and Kuwait. Israel was confronted by an Arab force of some 465,000 troops, over 2,880 tanks and 810 aircraft. (clipped partially from a website at random)

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami presents

Summer Solstice Aboriginal Arts Festival

in honour of National Aboriginal Day

In 1996, Former Governor General Romeo LeBlanc officially declared June 21st as National Aboriginal Day. June 21 was chosen because it is the summer solstice and, for many generations, Aboriginal Peoples have celebrated their culture and heritage on this day.

National Aboriginal Day is a day for all Canadians to celebrate the cultures and contributions to Canada of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. On June 13, 1996 former Governor General Romeo LeBlanc officially declared June 21 as National Aboriginal Day. June 21 was chosen as a significant date in time when Aboriginal Peoples have traditionally celebrated their culture, tradition and way of life as well the coming of the summer solstice. This celebration of Aboriginal cultures within Canada aims to bring about awareness to the rest of Canadian society, in all aspects of art, music, oral history and traditional games.

The events of National Aboriginal Day within the National Capital Region (NCR) are coordinated and facilitated in conjunction with a National Aboriginal Day committee. The committee is a unique collaboration between the primary National organizations reflective of the diversity of Aboriginal people from across Canada.

Each organization participates in the planning and execution of the National Aboriginal Day events to ensure that their community’s distinct cultures are represented. The committee members then take turns hosting National Aboriginal Day and with this year representing 2010, The Year of the Inuit, we are proud that Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami is our official host. Summer Solstice Aboriginal Arts Festival represents one of the few collaborative efforts between all of these National Aboriginal Organizations demonstrating their commitment to bringing a unified message about Aboriginal people to Canadians through this event.

National Aboriginal Day Committee

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) is the national Inuit organization in Canada representing four distinct Inuit regions in the Canadian arctic. ITK are the proud hosts of 2010 Events.

National Association of Friendship Centres (NAFC) NAFC promote and advocate for the concerns of urban Aboriginal people and represent 114 Friendship Centres across Canada. NAFC were the 2009 Hosts.

Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP) CAP represents the rights and interests of off-reserve Indian and Métis people living in urban, rural and remote areas throughout Canada. CAP were the host for NAD 2007 and NAD 2008 events.

Assembly of First Nations (AFN) is the national organization representing First Nations citizens in Canada. The AFN represents all citizens regardless of age, gender or place of residence. 2010 marks the first time that AFN has participated in the committee and planning of NAD events.

Métis National Council (MNC) Since 1983 MNC has represented the interests of Métis people nationally and internationally. MNC are currently not represented on the NAD committee.

Pauktuutit Inuit Womens’ Association is considered the national voice of Inuit women in Canada. PIWA are currently not represented on the NAD committee.

Native Womens Association of Canada (NWAC) has struggled for three decades to achieve equality for Aboriginal women in Canada through improving the economic, cultural and political opportunities. NWAC are currently not represented on the NAD committee.

To Say Nothing of the Dog

Jan Andrews and Mary Wiggin

NAC 4th Stage, 7:30pm

There are German shepherds out there saving people from drowning; there are Saint Bernards guiding people down from mountain tops all through the Alps. To Say Nothing of the Dog features no such creatures. Indeed, it could be said to be totally lacking in doggy noblesse oblige. It does have a dog who has not even the vaguest clue about guarding; it does take you on an unusual stroll through a graveyard; it introduces you to a canine haunting and to a family pet who inherits both money and power. Witty, wry, deliciously elegant, these are stories that put more than a little bite in the tale.

Mary Wiggin

Writer, teacher, literacy advocate, (as well as storyteller, of course) Mary Wiggin is known for her impeccable timing and her ability to make listeners laugh (other things too, in fact, but this is what matters now). She’s been a regular performer at the Fourth Stage, at The Tea Party and at Ottawa Storytelling Festivals. She doesn’t have a dog now either but she’s hoping no one will hold that against her.

Jan Andrews

First things first! Jan Andrews doesn’t have a dog right now. That doesn’t stop her knowing rather more than she’d like to about our canine companions, as To Say Nothing of the Dog reveals. Second (or should it have been first?), Jan is one of Canada’s premier storytellers. She’s told in festivals across the country and been invited to events in the US, Australia and the UK. She’s the co-founder of the new company, Two Women Productions, and a huge fan of storytelling at the Fourth Stage. She’s also the author of acclaimed books for young people. Find out more at www.janandrews.ca; www.2wp.ca.

Ten notable World Cup songs When soccer's World Cup rolls around every four years, many singers — and even some of the participating teams — decide to record a nationalistic tune that's suppose to inspire their country's squad. Rod Stewart, the Village People and the Pogues have all had a go at creating a World Cup song, although many of the tunes are long forgotten. In honour of this year's tournament, here's a look at 10 notable entries in this musical sub-genre.

Music and soccer are gloriously connected -- fans around the planet sing their lungs out to support their beloved teams and to humiliate opponents. As well, when the World Cup rolls around every four years, many singers -- and even some of the participating teams -- decide to record a nationalistic tune that's suppose to inspire their country's squad. Sometimes it works; most of the time it only inspires nausea in listeners. Rod Stewart, the Village People and the Pogues have all had a go at creating a World Cup song, although many of them are long forgotten. Here's a look at 10 notable entries in this musical sub-genre.

1. World in Motion by New Order (England, 1990)

The Manchester electronic band New Order seemed like an odd choice to create the England World Cup song back in 1990; their dark post-punk albums -- Brotherhood and Low-Life, for example -- bear no resemblance to previously released pub-friendly soccer tunes, which were as simple as nursery rhymes.

But New Order proved to be an inspired choice; World in Motion is more sonically sophisticated than any other English World Cup track, yet it has a killer chorus ("En-ger-land!") that defies you not to sing along. As well, winger John Barnes delivers a serviceable rap with some lyrics that neatly subvert the prevalent image of the English soccer fan as thug: "We ain't no hooligans/This ain't a football song/Three lions on my chest/I know we can't go wrong." This video clip comes from a 1990 episode of Top of the Pops; the song has gone to number one mere days before World Cup kick-off and the anticipation is palpable as Barnes and midfielder Paul Gascoigne clown around during a satellite interview from Italy.

Did it translate into World Cup success? England made it to the semi-finals in 1990 but lost to Argentina after the famous Diego Maradona "Hand of God" incident.

2. Oh Eh Arirang! by Various Artists (South Korea, 2006)

The South Korean team had a dream World Cup in 2002, co-hosting the tournament with Japan and finishing in fourth place. That's why the "Again 2002!" graphic keeps popping up in this hyper-caffeinated video for their 2006 squad. If you can get past the scary guy in the blond wig screaming at the start and the Vengaboys-Eurobeat dance vibe, it's actually pretty catchy, with a nice fan-friendly chant segment in the middle. Full marks for enthusiasm, if not musical sophistication.

Did it translate into World Cup success? The team didn't make it into the second round.

3. Three Lions '98 by Frank Skinner, David Baddiel and The Lightning Seeds (England, 1998)

Frank Skinner and David Baddiel are comedians who hosted an irreverent TV show called Fantasy Football League. Along with Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds, they originally wrote Three Lions for the Euro '96 soccer tournament. (The "football's coming home" refrain refers to the fact that England hosted Euro '96 and is also regarded as the birthplace of soccer.) The tune went to number one in the British charts; due to popular demand they re-recorded it for the 1998 World Cup, when it went to the top chart spot for a second time. The song manages to be both joyous and wistful, counterbalancing optimism ("We still believe") with a healthy dose of realism ("Tears for heroes dressed in grey.") The song has just been re-recorded yet again for World Cup 2010; the new version features Skinner, Baddiel and Broudie along with Robbie Williams and Russell Brand.

Did it translate into World Cup success? England made it into the second round but then lost to Argentina on penalty kicks.

4. Far Away in America, Village People and the German World Cup squad (Germany, 1994)

Yes, this actually happened. The World Cup was being staged in the U.S. for the first time, and someone in Germany thought it would be a good idea for their squad to pair off musically with an American act. Maybe David Hasselhoff's line was busy, because the Germans wound up with the way-past-their-expiry-date Village People, 16 years removed from their Macho Man glory. The video result is a sublime mess, shot in a bland space that looks like a Holiday Inn conference room. Although soccer players are generally great with their feet, these guys can't dance for beans; they're completely out of sync rhythmically. The Village People's lyrics are beyond generic: "Far away in America/We're gonna make it/Find our chance and take it." Still, we must be grateful that the camp icons were allowed to put their unique stamp on America's sole World Cup tournament to date.

Did it translate into World Cup success? Germany failed to defend their 1990 World Cup title and lost in the quarter-finals.

5. Jack's Heroes by The Pogues and The Dubliners (Ireland, 1990)

The "Jack" in the title is Jackie Charlton, the English soccer legend who had a successful stint as Ireland's manager in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Although it's tough to decipher Shane MacGowan's garbled lyrics, this is a paean to both the Irish World Cup squad and their devoted fans, a fun little ditty one can easily imagine belting out at the local pub. Unlike many other World Cup tracks, the sentiments in Jack's Heroes aren't drenched in testosterone or trash-talking other nations. Witness this lyrical description of Irish footie fans: "They wear green/And they are beautiful/And their hearts are filled with love./They're as pure as any lily/And as gentle as the dove."

Did it translate into World Cup success? Ireland did extremely well, making it to the quarter-finals before losing to Italy, 1-0.

6. Ole Ola by Rod Stewart and the Scottish World Cup squad (Scotland, 1978)

"Rod the Mod" grew up in London but his father was a Scottish soccer fanatic; the future rocker inherited his dad's passion for footie -- in his late teens, Stewart even had a brief try-out with Brentford F.C., a Third Division team. He opted for music as a career, offering this impeccable reasoning: "A musician's life is a lot easier and I can also get drunk and make music, and I can't do that and play football."

Stewart was at the peak of his solo career in 1978, but his interest in soccer hadn't diminished -- Ole Ola was supposed to inspire the Scottish team as they headed off for Argentina. The lyrics combine a roll-call of the players' names with some misplaced hubris about Scotland actually having a chance to win the World Cup: "Oh, Brazil, this time I don't think so/Holland without Cruyff just ain't the same." Musically speaking, Stewart sounds, well, not totally committed to creating an authentic South American vibe; you get the sense that this was recorded in one take, while some glamorous lady-friend was waiting impatiently in the control room.

Did it translate into World Cup success? The team didn't make it into the second round.

7. Wunderknaben by Udo Jürgens and the Austrian World Cup squad (Austria, 1998)

When most soccer squads get thrown into a recording studio to cut one of these World Cup ditties, they usually seem to be having fun -- not the Austrians. Dressed in three-piece suits, their mood is positively funereal in the video for Wunderknaben. No one even cracks a smile. Maybe the players were intimidated by Austrian music legend Udo Jürgens, who sings lead; or perhaps they were concerned about possible inaccuracies in lyrics like, "We are the wonder boys/We can't be intimidated/Friends, the stakes are high/For real wonder boys/Sometimes luck rains down." Stuck in a first -round group with Italy, they crashed and burned.

Did it translate into World Cup success? The team didn't make it into the second round.

8. Re-Sepp-Ten by the Danish World Cup squad (Denmark, 1986)

This 1986 effort from Denmark looks a lot like all of those charity singles recorded around that time: the players fumble around with their headphones, wear loud pastel colours and smile mechanically as they sing along to the period-specific synth-beat. And if you like mullets, this is the World Cup video for you: there are mullets as far as the eye can see. Halfway through the song, an actual professional performer makes an appearance to try to bail everyone out -- Dodo Gad, lead singer of 1980s Danish pop band Dodo and the Dodos. It's a valiant effort, but she can't save this doomed enterprise.

Did it translate into World Cup success? Denmark made it through to the second round in 1986 but were then blown out by Spain, 5-1.

9. Pra Frente Brasil, composed by Miguel Gustavo (Brazil, 1970)

Not that the Brazilian squad needs a song for inspiration; they actually rely on football talent. This tune was released for the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, which was Brazil legend Pelé's swansong. It's a nation that definitely takes soccer seriously: "All connected on the same emotion, it's all a single heart/All together we go forward Brazil/Hail the national team." Pra Frente Brasil is also the title of a 1982 feature film, which suggests that the success of the national soccer team in 1970 served to distract the public from the unfair treatment of opposition leaders by Brazil's military government.

Did it translate into World Cup success? Yes, yes, a thousand times yes. Brazil decimated Italy in the final, 4-1, for their third World Cup victory.

10. The World Cup's Waiting for You by The Skatoons (England, 2010)

Hope springs eternal for the English soccer fan in this likeable ska track. Like many previous songs about England's team, this one (see the video at the top of the story) doesn't ignore the mixed results that nation has produced at the World Cup: "For all the years we've waited/Since we celebrated/Always so near but yet so far/We've watched the ball go over the bar." Not exactly oozing confidence, but incredibly catchy with a great singalong chorus. This should go down well with the lager louts.

Did it translate into World Cup success? To be determined.

Gruppo Rubato was founded in 2002 by Patrick Gauthier and Tania Levy, and includes core members Kris Joseph and Gavriella Silverstone. Rubato presents challenging, contemporary, politically-charged Canadian theatre for a young, educated, urban audience. We are exclusively dedicated to the creation and presentation of new work, specializing in works by Ottawa artists.

Gruppo Rubato is dedicated to creating challenging, contemporary theatre for a young, educated, urban audience. The core members of Gruppo Rubato are passionate about political theatre: work that challenges audiences to reflect on their ethical and moral standpoints; work that calls for action on issues that are important to Canadians. We are exclusively dedicated to the creation and presentation of new work, and we are committed to encouraging the fertility of the local arts scene by focusing on plays written by Ottawa artists. Gruppo Rubato seeks to increase the visibility of the Ottawa theatre community’s creativity by sharing its work through touring its productions, and by inviting artists from other communities to take part in our creative process.

Since its founding in 2002 by Patrick Gauthier and Tania Levy, Gruppo Rubato has produced seven original plays, four of which were presented at Fringe festivals in six major Canadian cities. This track record of new creation is unique among Ottawa-based theatre companies. The company currently consists of four core members – Patrick Gauthier, Kris Joseph, Tania Levy, and Gavriella Silverstone – and has become known for its dark humour, biting satire, and stylized performance. Rubato shows are always highly anticipated, regularly playing to packed houses and critical acclaim.

In 2003, Gruppo Rubato was invited by Ottawa’s Great Canadian Theatre Company to produce a show for their Great Canadian Late Night Series, while from 2004-2007 the company toured nationally on the Fringe Festival circuit (winning multiple awards and praise in the process). In 2007 Rubato’s The Churchill Protocol was invited to participate in the Magnetic North Theatre Festival’s Industry Series Pitch Session for delegates from across the country, the continent, and the world. Most recently, Ottawa’s Rideau Awards recognized the company’s production of The Churchill Protocol, naming the play Ottawa’s “Best New Creation” of 2007, while the Great Canadian Theatre Company has invited Rubato to participate in the GCTC’s highly sought after Production Mentorship program.

Now six years old, Rubato’s work has been called “dark and provocative” (Ottawa Citizen), “pure delirium” (CBC Ottawa), “relevant and poignant” (CBC Toronto), and “funny, furious, and smart” (Edmonton Journal). In 2004, Denis Armstrong of the Ottawa Sun said: “Some companies are just plain talented. Gruppo Rubato is one of those companies.”

Israel intercepts Gaza-bound aid ship

Irish-owned vessel boarded without incident

Last Updated: Saturday, June 5, 2010 /4:05 PM ET : CBC News : Israeli forces boarded a Gaza-bound ship Saturday, preventing the Irish-owned vessel from breaking through a naval blockade of the territory ruled by Hamas.

Israel first sent four warnings to the MV Rachel Corrie — named after an American activist killed by an Israeli army bulldozer in 2003 — telling the crew to sail to the nearby Israeli port of Ashdod.

The 1,200-tonne vessel was carrying aid, along with 11 pro-Palestinian activists and nine crew members as it was intercepted in international waters, about 30 kilometres from Gaza's shore.

Israeli forces avoided a repeat of Monday's events on the Turkish aid ship Mavi Marmara as it escorted the Irish ship to Ashdod.

Military spokeswoman Lt.-Col. Avital Leibovich said Saturday's takeover took just minutes as the ship's captain gathered passengers in one area of the vessel, presumably to avoid violence.

She said commandos clambered onto the boat by sea, instead of descending from helicopters as occurred Monday when commandos were attacked and nine activists were killed.

Netanyahu fears 'Iranian port'

After the latest takeover at sea, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signalled he is determined to enforce the naval blockade, saying he would "not allow the establishment of an Iranian port in Gaza."

Iran is one of Israel's most implacable foes and supplies weapons and cash to Hamas.

Netanyahu said Israel's three-year-old blockade of Gaza is meant to keep weapons out of the hands of Hamas.

Egypt has helped enforce the blockade on land, but President Hosni Mubarak ordered the passenger terminal with Gaza to open daily, instead of sporadically, after last Monday's raid.

The U.S. had adopted a gradual approach of persuading Israel to ease restrictions but said Friday it was working "urgently" with Israel, the Palestinian Authority and other international partners to develop new procedures for delivering more goods to Gaza while blocking the entry of weapons.

Last Updated: Friday, June 4, 2010/ 7:11 PM ET : The Canadian Press: A leaked draft of the final communiqué for the upcoming G8 summit suggests Canada has dodged a bullet on the thorny issues of abortion and climate change.

The draft, obtained by The Canadian Press, says the world's most powerful countries are prepared to throw money at "all factors" affecting the health of women and children in poor countries but doesn't specifically mention abortion.

There is no agreement yet on specific funding for the maternal initiative, climate change, food security or aid to developing countries, despite strong words urging concrete measures.

"Action is required on all factors that affect the health of women and children," the document says. "This includes addressing gender inequality, ensuring women's and children's rights and improving education for women and girls."

Instead of singling out abortion for funding, the document refers only to the need to strengthen "voluntary family planning," likely giving Ottawa the wiggle room it seeks to avoid supporting access to safe abortion in poor countries.

The draft also shows that countries are still negotiating how much they should spend on the maternal and child health initiative.

Sources have told The Canadian Press that Canada is willing to put up about $1 billion as long as other countries contribute as well.

But in the draft communiqué, the total amount is still just an "X."

The Harper government has been under heavy fire for insisting that it will not fund abortion as part of its G8 maternal health initiative.

On the environment, the only thing G8 negotiators have apparently agreed to is that fighting climate change shouldn't hurt countries' economies — a position the Harper government has been pushing.

The draft also talks about the importance of keeping the G8 as a leader in international affairs despite the rising prevalence of the broader G20 — another Harper position.

It defines the G20 as a body to deal with economic issues. The G8 summit is June 25-26 in Huntsville, Ont., followed by the G20 in Toronto June 26-27.

I am glad to send to your Honourable Minister and Ambasador this letter in reference to the previous 17 political and fictional articles published in Al-Mistakable Weekly Newspaper. These articles were published in issues from Montreal, Canada in Volumes Nos. (525, 529,531,532-541,545,548 and 549), 2002. The documents, which are related to the historical period of the Yemenite Civil War of 1994, and other several sources of information regarding humanitarian activities to stop the war were all in attempts to restore peace in that region.

In addition to those documents, a prophecy was told regarding terrorism and crimes committed internationally, which were documented in the fingerprints and footsteps (i.e., the fingerprints and footsteps are used to symbolize the ability to forecast terrorism and crimes) of Sir Al-Mansouri M.T.; the Canadian Prophet and descendent of the Al-Mansouri and Al-Sourorri tribes. These tribes are one of the aboriginal groups recently discovered to have settled in the Arabian desert city called Al-Jaharah, which is one of the cities of the State of Kuwait. Please accept my best regards and wishes.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely Yours,

The government has introduced new copyright legislation that would legalize activities commonly engaged in by thousands of Canadians — such as copying a CD — but which would criminalize breaking digital locks placed on gadgets and media.

The legislation, Bill C-32, proposes enshrining in law some of the following measures:

  • The express legalization of format shifting, or the copying of content from one device to another, such as a CD to a computer or an iPod.
  • The express legalization of time shifting, or recording television programs for later viewing but not for the purposes of building up a library.
  • Allowing consumers to make a back-up copy of content to protect against loss or damage.
  • A YouTube clause that allows people to mash up media under certain circumstances, as long as it's not for commercial gain.
  • A "notice-and-notice" system where copyright holders will inform internet providers of possible piracy from their customers. The ISP would then be required to notify the customer that he or she was violating the law. The violator's personal information could then be released to the copyright holder with a court order.
  • ISPs and search engines would be immune from the copyright violations of their users.
  • A differentiation of commercial copyright violation versus individual violation. Individuals found violating copyright law could be liable for penalties between $100 and $5,000, which is below the current $20,000 maximum.
  • New exceptions to fair dealing that will allow copyright violations for the purposes of parody, satire and education.

A key clause regarding the breaking of digital locks, however, could trump many of those other permissions. The bill would make it illegal for a person to crack a digital lock placed on a device, disc or file. It would be illegal to copy a CD or digital song sold with copy protection on it, for example.

A television broadcaster could also air a program with a code inserted into it that would prevent it from being recorded, or that would delete it from a PVR after a certain amount of time. It would be illegal for consumers to attempt to circumvent those codes.

The bill would also make illegal the sale or importation of tools designed to break digital locks, and allow copyright holders to go after websites designed to encourage violations and piracy.

Industry Minister Tony Clement and Heritage Minister James Moore introduced the legislation at the Electronic Arts video game studio in Montreal on Wednesday. The duo veered from standard protocol, where ministers introduce bills in the House of Commons, to illustrate the importance of copyright to Canada's cultural industries. The EA studio in Montreal employs more than 700 people.

Earlier in the day, Moore told reporters in Ottawa that the proposed law represented a balanced approach to updating Canada's laws so that they are in line with other developed nations.

"Consumers and creators both need to be empowered. Every day consumers have to have reassurance what they're doing isn't illegal, that what they want to do with their own information is their own choice," he said.

"But at the same time, we also want to make reassurances that Canada is not going to be an outlier on the international stage when it comes to allowing piracy and the theft of people's creations."

Reactions mixed

Reaction to the bill was mixed. Consumer and education advocates were critical of the lock provisions while entertainment companies cheered them.

"To put it bluntly, the legislation presented today will make it even more difficult for university and college teachers and students to have access to and use copyrighted materials for teaching and learning," said David Robinson, associate executive director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers, in a statement.

"By imposing a blanket provision against all circumvention, the government will lock down a vast amount of digital material, effectively preventing its use for research, education and innovation and curtailing the user rights of Canadians."

The Entertainment Software Association of Canada said the legislation will help limit piracy of digital content such as video games.

"Without strong protection for our intellectual property, we're basically operating in a digital Wild West," said executive director Danielle Parr in a statement. "Promoting piracy under the guise of 'user rights' does nothing to defend the livelihood of thousands of Canadians who rely on turning great ideas into world class entertainment."

The Canadian Film and Television Production Association said the new bill will help protect the 160,000 jobs in the areas of film, television and online content creation.

“While we will need to study the bill in detail, we believe that today’s announcement is an important first step in bringing Canada in line with our competitors around the world, allowing our creative industries to flourish,” said president and chief executive Norm Bolen.

Bill is government's third attempt

The new bill is the government's third attempt at updating copyright laws. In 2005, the Liberal government introduced Bill C-60, which also contained a clause that prohibited the breaking of digital locks. The bill was criticized for favouring the interests of copyright holders over consumers and died when Parliament was dissolved in the fall of that year.

In 2008, the Conservative government tried again with Bill C-61, which also had anti-circumvention rules and faced similar criticism. That bill died when Parliament was prorogued.

In each case, critics said the government was catering to the U.S. entertainment industry, which has lobbied hard for strong anti-circumvention laws similar to those found in the United States. The U.S. Digital Millennium Copyright Act makes it illegal to break digital locks on devices and content, although there are some exceptions. Consumers are allowed, for example, to crack the locks placed on their cellphones. Bill C-32 proposes a similar exception.

The legislation's introduction follows a lengthy cross-country consultation held by Clement and Moore last year. Thousands of Canadians took part in the process, and many said they did not want restrictive locks put on their electronic devices and digital goods.

Clement has said the legislation is not a done deal and that he hopes to further discuss it with opposition parties over the summer.

The Liberals have said they are willing to do so, but the NDP could take a hard-line stance. The party's copyright critic Charlie Angus, the MP for Timmins-James Bay, in March introduced a private member's bill that proposed an additional tax be placed on digital devices such as iPods and laptops.

The tax would be an extension of the private copying levy, a fee that Canadians currently pay on blank media such as CDs, that is used to compensate copyright holders for the copies being made on that media. Angus argued that extending the fee to devices would effectively make copying legal yet still compensate content creators.

In an interview, Angus criticized the digital lock provisions.

"The only rights you will get under this bill are those that U.S.-based entertainment concerns decide you get," he said. "If the technological protections override those rights, then you have no rights."

Angus, a musician himself, also said the proposed legislation makes no provisions for artists, despite broadening consumers' ability to copy media. His view was echoed by the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists.

"How is it balanced to allow people to make copies of our work without giving us anything in return? Half the bill is missing, the half that respects and pays creators," said ACTRA president Ferne Downey. "The simple step of extending the private copying levy to digital devices is a win-win solution for consumers and artists, it seems like it would have been a no-brainer."

Liberal copyright critic Marc Garneau, the MP for Westmount-Ville-Marie, said the bill seems to be missing an exception that would allow people to break digital locks if it was for private, non-commercial use, but added that his party will have to study it further.

"This is a bill that needs to go through the parliamentary process," he said. "It's going to take us a little while to assess what is being proposed."

Clement has said he would like to fast-track Bill C-32 and has invited opposition parties to the table in hopes of hammering out its kinks over the summer. Angus and Garneau both expressed doubts that proper discussion over the legislation can be done quickly. Both said it would likely be fall before any real work is done.

Michael Geist, a law professor at the University of Ottawa and staunch advocate of balanced copyright, said the proposed legislation was flawed but fixable. The fair dealing definitions and exceptions need to be broadened and consumers need to be given the right to break locks for personal uses, he wrote on his blog.

"There will undoubtedly be attacks on the fair dealing reforms and pressure to repeal them, along with the U.S. and the copyright lobby demanding that their digital lock provisions be left untouched," Geist said. "If Canadians stay quiet, both are distinct possibilities. If they speak out, perhaps the bill can be fixed."

Police find body of alleged shooter in woods. Last Updated: Wednesday, June 2, 2010/ 3:14 PM ET . CBC News

At least 12 people are dead and 25 are wounded after a taxi driver opened fire in small, picturesque villages in northwest England on Wednesday morning, British police say.

The rampage, in a region famed for its tranquil beauty, shocked a country where handguns are banned and multiple shootings rare. It was Britain's deadliest mass shooting since 1996.

Police said three people in Wednesday's attack were in critical condition in hospital.

The shootings "shocked the people of Cumbria and around the country to the core," police Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Hyde said.

Police have found the body of a man believed to be the alleged gunman, Derrick Bird, 52, a cabbie described as quiet but friendly. They found the body in a wooded area near the Lake District village of Boot, where it was believed Bird had fled.

They also found a gun alongside the body.

The discovery ended a harrowing morning for residents of the country's West and Central Lakes areas, whom police ordered to stay indoors as the search for Bird ensued.

"Police are asking those who were sheltering to now go about their normal day-to-day activities," the Cumbria Constabulary said on its website. "[We] thank them for their patience in incredibly difficult circumstances."

Shootings in 11 locations

The shootings began at about 10:30 a.m. local time in Whitehaven, a town in Cumbria county about 560 kilometres northwest of London.

The BBC reported there had been shootings in 11 locations, not all of them fatal. Witnesses described seeing the gunman driving around shooting out the window of his car.

Peter Watson, a witness, told the BBC he had seen a body lying in the road.

"When I first got here, it must have just happened. There was a man lying on the ground with police [standing] over him and a jacket on him," he said.

Another witness, Alan Hannah, told the Sun newspaper he was driving in Whitehaven when he "saw all these officers running out." He then "saw a man with a large shotgun" pull up to a stoplight in a car with a smashed windshield.

"I drove through the red light to get ... out of the way," Hannah, 68, told the newspaper. "I got home safely but was very shaken."

Soon afterwards, a farmer was believed to have been shot dead in Gosforth, several kilometres to the east, according to BBC reporter Chris Stewart.

Police are asking other possible witnesses to come forward.

'I can't believe he would do that — he was a quiet little fellow.'—Sue Matthews, Whitehaven taxi worker

They have not released the names of those killed.

Sue Matthews, who works at A2B Taxis in Whitehaven, said Bird was self-employed, quiet and lived alone.

"I would say he was fairly popular," Matthews said. "I would see him once a week out and about. He was known as Birdy.

"I can't believe he would do that — he was a quiet little fellow."

Taxi driver Peter Leder knew Bird, whom he had seen on Tuesday. Leder said he was struck by Bird's words when they parted.

"When he left he said, 'See you Peter, but I won't see you again,' " he told the U.K.'s Channel 4 News.

Deadly shootings are rare in Britain, where gun ownership is tightly restricted and handguns are banned.

In 1987, gun enthusiast Michael Ryan killed 16 people in the English town of Hungerford. In 1996, Thomas Hamilton killed 16 children and a teacher at a kindergarten in Dunblane, Scotland.

Last Updated: Tuesday, June 1, 2010 /7:07 PM ET: The venue was the same and both events had a German connection. But the results were decidedly different.

On February 20, Brian Mulroney returned to the government conference centre off Parliament Hill, to the applause of more than 400 people.

He had come to discuss and be recognised for the significant role he played in the reunification of Germany 20 years earlier.

Flash forward to Monday of this week, in a conference room just down the hall from where that first welcome reverberated.

This time, Mulroney's reputation was sliced, diced and skewered by the man who conducted a judicial inquiry into the former prime minister's business arrangements with Canadian-German businessman and lobbyist Karlheinz Schreiber.

Justice Jeffrey Oliphant was appointed to look into the controversial dealings between the two men after Mulroney admitted he had accepted large amounts of cash in three separate payments from Schreiber in hotel rooms in Montreal and New York.

It also came to light that most of the money was kept in a safe in his Montreal home and the rest in a safety deposit box in a New York bank, where he did not pay tax on it until several years after receiving it.

An ironic footnote to all this: In his testimony before a parliamentary committee in December 2007, Schreiber had said one of the reasons he wanted to help Mulroney, after his time as prime minister, was because of the role he played in reuniting Germany.

'Inappropriate'

In his report Oliphant confirmed all of the details already known in this case but couldn't add much clarity to some of the issues that are still in doubt.

For instance, did Mulroney receive $300,000 in payments, as Schreiber contends; or $225,000, as Mulroney says it was?

Ultimately, Oliphant concluded, it didn't really matter. Whatever the amount, accepting money in cash without any kind of paper trail, instead of demanding a cheque, giving a receipt or putting the money through his consulting company or a bank account, meant that both Mulroney and Schreiber were trying to keep their arrangement secret.

And that, said the judge, was inappropriate behaviour for a former prime minister.

Under oath

Indeed, Oliphant was most scathing on what has become the flashpoint for this saga: Mulroney's testimony under oath in 1996 when he was suing the federal government.

That was when justice officials had alleged, in a letter to Swiss authorities, that Mulroney may have profited illegally from the purchase of 34 Air Canada passenger jets from the European consortium that employed Schreiber as a lobbyist and agent.

At that point, when testifying, Mulroney had already accepted the three cash payments from Schreiber, the most recent just over a year earlier.

But when answering a government lawyer's question, Mulroney testified that, after leaving office, his relationship with Schreiber had been limited to having a few cups of coffee with him, when the lobbyist was passing through Montreal.

In the aftermath of that testimony, the government defence folded and an arbitrator awarded Mulroney $2.1 million for his costs in the lawsuit.

It was only a number of years later that lawyer and author William Kaplan, who had already written an exculpatory book about Mulroney and Airbus, found out about the payments and blew the whistle in articles in the Globe and Mail.

Those articles, combined with years of investigative work by the CBC's Fifth Estate team of Harvey Cashore and Lynden MacIntyre, peeled away much of the secrecy around the dealings between the two men and led ultimately to the Oliphant inquiry where the justice did not mince words.

Of Mulroney's 1996 testimony under oath, Oliphant wrote: "Mr. Mulroney's response would lead anyone not knowing the true situation about his dealings with Mr. Schreiber or the money he had received from Mr. Schreiber to believe that the post-prime ministerial contact consisted of a couple of brief meetings to have a cup of coffee.

"For Mr. Mulroney to attempt to justify his failure to make disclosure in those circumstances by asserting that Mr. Sheppard [the government lawyer] did not ask the correct question is, in my view, patently absurd.

"Mr. Mulroney's answer to Mr. Sheppard's question failed to disclose appropriately the facts of which Mr. Mulroney was well aware, when such disclosure was clearly called for. And that answer was not forthcoming."

Timing

That finding has some parliamentarians demanding that the former prime minister pay back the $2.1 million he received after that misleading testimony.

But the Oliphant findings were not all damaging to Mulroney.

The judge decided that the two men entered into a business arrangement in August 1993, when Mulroney was still an MP, finishing up his term, but no longer prime minister.

That was the meeting where Mulroney accepted the first envelope of cash.

The two had also met two months earlier, in June, when Mulroney was still PM. A finding that the deal had been struck then would have been more serious. But since no cash, no deal, Oliphant ruled.

The judge also noted that Schreiber was still paying Mulroney when the Conservatives were no longer in power, when he would not have any influence over the successor, Liberal government.

In the process, he accepted Mulroney's version of events, that he was hired to promote the sale of proposed Canadian-made armoured vehicles overseas, particularly to countries that were members of the UN Security Council.

Oliphant did that, although he admitted there was no evidence that Mulroney had ever done any lobbying along those lines, that is, to sell vehicles that hadn't been built from a plant that hadn't been constructed.

Of course, while Oliphant seems clear on what the payments were for, others may share the view expressed by Bloc MP Carole Lavallée in December 2007 when Mulroney first testified before the Commons ethics committee.

"He says it was for one thing. You say it was for another. Perhaps it was for neither, but something else altogether."

Maybe we will never really know.
