Thu Jul 29 08:22am PDT: By Sean Leahy: There's a lot of animosity in the NHL these days. Between fans. Between teams. And sometimes between executives.

Whether it's Max Talbot calling Alex Oveckin a "douche", or the Brian Burke/Kevin Lowe feud from a few seasons back or Sean Avery(notes), well, against anyone, the hate around the NHL is something that helps promote it.

Hatred between the fanbases of franchises has existed forever in the NHL. Toronto and Montreal, Edmonton and Calgary, New York and New York, and Detroit and San Jose are just some of the rivalries that pique interest around the league, and not just among those fans that are living and dying on the two points up for grabs..

Outside of rivalries, there are certain teams that, no matter the circumstance, don't feel the love by majority of fans around the NHL. Of course, in this age of the Internet and social media, fan outrage can be expressed everywhere and just do a Google search of "[Insert team here] sucks" and that will keep you busy for hours.

Yesterday, Sports Illustrated posted their "25 Most Hated Teams of All Time" list yesterday with the 1974-75 Philadelphia Flyers coming in at No. 4 behind the '92 Dallas Cowboys, 1988-89 Detroit Pistons and the 1986 University of Miami football team.

But who would be candidates for the most hated teams in the NHL today?

Our choices are after the jump.

Pittsburgh Penguins. When you've won a recent Stanley Cup and are the center of various conspiracy theories ranging from the rigging of the 2005 NHL Draft to referees turning a blind eye every chance they can to Gary Bettman somehow being Sidney Crosby's(notes) father, you're not going to be very popular by fans around the league. This business of them being involved in yet another Winter Classic ain't helping things either.

Detroit Red Wings. Like the Penguins, the Red Wings have won a Stanley Cup in the past few seasons to go along with their three rings since 1997. With success comes jealousy from others and Detroit's consistent reign atop the NHL's hierarchy, along with playoff battles with the Colorado Avalanche and San Jose Sharks, has bred much contempt towards the organization.

ept_sports_nhl_experts-790809316-1276551696.jpg?ymRYDTDDaXjE.WEv

Washington Capitals. They have one of the league's biggest stars in Alex Ovechkin(notes), whose on and off the ice incidents this past season garnered some negative press and turned fans and some media against him. The Caps also have an owner who isn't afraid to say what he feels. Combine that with a fan base accused of hopping on the bandwagon post-2005 and you're going to have some fans that were overjoyed when the Montreal Canadiens eliminated them in the first round this past postseason..

Toronto Maple Leafs. The 2001-02 team was dubbed "The Most Hated Team in Hockey" by SI's Michael Farber (and ranked No. 22 on their list) because of former players like Darcy Tucker(notes), Shane Corson and Tie Domi, the Leafs are reviled by many because of their brash general manager Brian Burke; their extremely passionate fan base and because of the magnitude of their exposure, especially on Hockey Night in Canada telecasts.

Philadelphia Flyers. The blueprint of the team hasn't changed since the Broad Street Bullies days of the 70's and having the likes of Scott Hartnell(notes), Dan Carcillo and uber villain Chris Pronger(notes) is really the perfect recipe for not receiving the warmest of welcomes when entering arenas on the road.

Those are our five choices of team's that draw the most hate in today's NHL.

Who would you say is currently the most hated team in the NHL?

Fri Jul 23 06:29am PDT: Do not adjust your monitor: This is an actual photograph from the pre-wedding festivities for Detroit Red Wings star Henrik Zetterberg(notes) and his TV presenter lady-love Emma Andersson in her Swedish hometown of Molle, located on the Baltic Sea. And really, what says "till death do us part" better than dressing like you're on a Depression-era chain gang with George Clooney?

ept_sports_nhl_experts-685961547-1279890977.jpg?ymhoyfDDaAWFmLtV

ept_sports_nhl_experts-442221426-1279891007.jpg?ym_oyfDDE1HQGBj6The Swedish newspapers Expressen and Aftonbladet published these hilarious images from Thursday's wedding, featuring the happy couple in their respective Dread Pirate Roberts/Amish criminal get-ups.

Also featured Red Wings players like Andreas Lilja(notes), Johan Franzen(notes) and Nicklas Lidstrom(notes) rocking these striped nightmares. In the photo above, you can spy Pavel Datsyuk(notes) on the far left with Valtteri Filppula(notes). (Why do we imagine Dats brought his own bath wear?)

So what's the deal with the greatest hockey theme wedding since Jim Carrey showed up dressed as Fidel Castro to Dan Hinote's(notes) nuptials with Jenny McCarthy's sister? George James Malik of Snapshots worked long hours Thursday night translating and researching, revealing the backstory. Turns out the 120 guests didn't realize what they were in for when bused to the shore:

[Molle] apparently known for the fact that its "baths" were public and open to both men and women as early as the late 19th century. So, as Emma tells Aftonbladet's Johanna Helsten, the wedding party got to poke fun at tradition, probably mandatory bathing attire included. [...]

You might want to note in the group photo that some of the attendees are wearing fake moustaches, fake Coke bottle glasses and vintage-1900 hats. It's a big gag on tradition, and Hank and Emma obviously sprung it on the wedding guests. A very knowing joke.

From Expressen TV, here's footage from the Zetterberg Wedding. Sadly, at no point do the Chicago Blackhawks show up in Snidely Whiplash mustaches, attempting to tie guests to train tracks.

Congrats to the happy couple, who we hear are currently vacationing in a "Where's Waldo?" book. By the way, it's a medical fact that if the Red Wings' Swedish players wore these outfits on the same ice as the Canadiens wore their barber pole sweaters, your optic nerves would burst into flames.

July 2, 2010 By CBC News: Rescuers used canoes and front-end loaders following heavy rain and widespread street flooding Thursday night in Yorkton, Sask.

About 100 families were forced from their homes when water poured into their basements. More left their houses Friday morning and sought shelter.

Mayor James Wilson said a state of local emergency has been declared, adding that there has never been flooding to this extent before in the city of 15,000 people about 190 kilometres northeast of Regina.

The storm sewer system was overwhelmed and many streets were under water, including sections of Broadway Street in the heart of the city. Power was turned off in sections of Yorkton.

CBC Saskatchewan weather consultant Wayne Miskolczi said that according to Environment Canada 64 millimetres fell before midnight, and further heavy rain was recorded early Friday.

"I'm sure there are spots in Yorkton that have had well over 100 millimetres," he said.

Wilson said he's been told that some areas received 100 to 150 millimetres of rain in half an hour. An estimated 60 to 70 per cent of homes took in water, he said, and many businesses were flooded.

Yorkton has had floods before, but not like this, Wilson said. "Nothing to this extent." He said some people had to be carried away in front-end loaders.

The mayor added that Premier Brad Wall called him and assured him there will be quick provincial relief for people in need.

An emergency evacuation centre was set up at the Gallagher Centre, the city's main recreational centre and fairground. People making their way there were told to stick to higher routes. Some flooded-out residents were seeking refuge in hotels as far away as Regina.

"They were evacuating people in canoes," said Michael Paslofski, a spokesman with the Canadian Red Cross in Yorkton. "If this rain comes again, we're going to be in big trouble."

A CBC reporter said one couple paddled a canoe to their home Friday morning to pick up some clothing.

Additional room at the evacuation centre has been set aside in anticipation that there may be more problems later Friday. More thunderstorms were in the forecast.

Record-setting amounts of rain have been dumped on Saskatchewan in recent weeks. In Saskatoon, city council passed an emergency resolution Friday morning asking the province for disaster relief following flooding earlier in the week.

The town of Maple Creek in the southwest part of the province declared itself a disaster zone last month after more than 100 millimetres of rain fell in 48 hours.

After heavy rain July 1, a state of local emergency was declared in Yorkton, Sask. Depending on the neighbourhood, anywhere from 60 to 150 millimetres of rain fell in the city of 15,000. Looking east from Broadway Street, the downtown area looked like a lake. (Submitted by citykidontheprairies).

A former guard at the Belzec death camp who is accused of participating in the killings of more than 430,000 Jews during the Second World War has been charged in youth court.

Samuel Kunz, 88, was charged in German youth court, a state court in Bonn said, because he was 20 when he is alleged to have started working at the camp in occupied Poland in January 1942. German law says people between 18 and 21 can be tried as minors or adults.

A judge will have to decide which court Kunz will be tried in, court spokesman Matthias Nordmeyer said.

Kunz was indicted last week.

He is the third-most wanted Nazi on a list maintained by the Simon Wiesenthal Center.

The court documents released Thursday allege that Kunz was involved in all aspects of the camp, including getting prisoners from trains to gas chambers, and, ultimately, throwing their corpses into mass graves.

Kunz is also accused of "personal excesses" in the shooting deaths of 10 Jews.

"In July 1943, the defendant is accused of having shot two persons who had escaped from a train going to the death camp and had been captured by guards," the court statement said.

He is alleged to have killed eight other prisoners who had been wounded by other guards between May and June 1943.

"The defendant then took the weapon from the other guard to shoot the wounded victims to death," said the court statement.

Interest arose in Kunz from the case of John Demjanjuk, who is currently on trial in Munich for allegedly being a guard at the Sobibor camp in Poland.

Prosecutors said Kunz and Demjanjuk trained at the Trawniki SS camp.

(CNN) -- A suspected Russian spy is missing after being arrested in Cyprus and released on bail, a police spokesman told CNN on Wednesday.

Authorities arrested Robert Christopher Metsos, 55, in Larnaca after an Interpol "red notice" was served on him, Cypriot police said Tuesday.

Police said he was released on bail pending further proceedings but was told not to leave the country and was ordered to check in nightly with police. He did not check in Wednesday, and police are searching for him, a spokesman said.

Metsos is among 11 suspects in an alleged Russian spy ring in the United States.

At the time of his arrest, he was traveling on a Canadian passport and was about to board a flight to Budapest, Hungary. Metsos faces extradition to the United States.

His disappearance came two days after the U.S. Justice Department announced the arrest of 10 people on charges of being Russian agents involved in a long-term mission in the United States.

Five of the suspects appeared in a New York courtroom Monday. Four of the five, including a longtime U.S.-based columnist for the Spanish-language El Diario newspaper, were advised of their rights and ordered held because of flight risk, with their next hearing scheduled for Thursday.

The other defendant, identified in a court document as Anna Chapman, was denied bail. No additional hearings have been scheduled.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that the suspects committed no actions directed against American interests and that the arrests are "unfounded and have unseemly goals."

"We do not understand the reasons why the U.S. Department of Justice has made a public statement in the spirit of the Cold War," said a statement on the ministry's website. "Such incidents have occurred in the past, when our relations were on the rise. In any case it is regrettable that all these things are happening on the background of the 'reset' in Russian-U.S. relations announced by the U.S. administration."

Russia's prime minister, Vladimir Putin, said American police were "out of hand" but expressed the hope that relations would not be harmed. "I hope the positive developments that have been accumulated recently will not be damaged," Putin said.

On Wednesday, Assistant Secretary of State P.J. Crowley said the State Department had no plans to expel any Russian diplomats over the matter. "I'm not projecting any diplomatic consequences other than the goodwill that we hope will be there going forward to continue to focus on the issues where we agree and work constructively on the areas on which we disagree," Crowley said, adding that officials throughout the State Department had been in touch with various levels of the Russian government to discuss the issue.

"As we've made clear -- and as I think officials in Moscow have made clear -- we are going to work as hard as we can to move beyond this and continue to focus on the many issues with which we have common interest," Crowley said. "Our focus is on the process going forward."

The Justice Department said the suspects were supposed to have recruited intelligence agents but were not directly involved in obtaining U.S. secrets themselves. They were charged with acting as agents of a foreign government, and nine also were charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The charges include conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government without notifying the U.S. attorney general, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, the Justice Department said. Conspiracy to commit money laundering has a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.

The case resulted from a multiyear investigation conducted by the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York and the Justice Department's National Security Division, according to a Justice Department statement. The 11 suspects were charged in two separate criminal complaints.

CNN's Terry Frieden, Jill Dougherty, Michael Schwartz, Arkady Irshenko, Elise Labott and Carol Jordan contributed to this report.

Montreal Mafioso killed in shootout: reports

Agostino Cuntrera, 66, is believed to have been killed in St-Leonard on Tuesday.

Agostino Cuntrera, 66, is believed to have been killed in St-Leonard on Tuesday. (CBC)

A well-known member of the Montreal Mafia is reportedly one of two men killed in a shootout in the city's east end on Tuesday.

Police have not officially released their names, but it has been widely reported in the Quebec media that Agostino Cuntrera, 66, was killed in broad daylight in front of a business he owned in St-Leonard.

The reports say the other victim might have been his bodyguard.

Cuntrera, who had connections with the Rizzuto crime family, was well known to the police. He is believed to have taken over Montreal's Mafia after its presumed boss Vito Rizzuto was jailed in the United States.

Montreal authorities say several gunshots were heard at the scene of the shooting, in an industrial area of the borough. Police were looking for a black Chevrolet Impala that witnesses saw leaving the area.

A man in his 40s was taken to hospital where he later died, police spokesman Yannick Paradis said, adding the other man was declared dead at the scene with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.

Two people were arrested overnight but later released when police found they had no connection with the case.

The department's major-crimes investigators set up a perimeter Tuesday afternoon and combed the area for clues until early Wednesday morning.

Investigators are planning to meet with witnesses.

"Emmas Glück" is a cinema fairytale, familiar, spellbinding, gruesome. And how does it end, this film version of Claudia Schreiber's bestselling what-a-way-to-go novel? With a jab. And it goes straight to the viewer's heart." (Stuttgarter Zeitung)

After getting the bad news that he is soon to die of cancer, Max wants to escape to the most beautiful place in the world – Mexico. When he accidentally lands at Emma’s pig farm, he realizes that true happiness waits just around the corner ...

Emma is a pig-breeder at a shabby and indebted farm. She slaughters the pigs in her own way: she treats them lovingly till the last day; the lethal cut shows something like tenderness and in Emma’s strong arms the dying animals cease bleeding, calmly and submittingly. But Emma is lonely. The missing man in her life is replaced by her motor-bike. But the loneliness stays. Until one night when a Jaguar crashes on her farm. Inside the wrecked car lies an unconscious man and a bag full of money. Emma’s luck seems to be perfect: fate has thrown money – and a man, Max – into her lap. Suspecting that he has stolen the money, Emma hides the man in her bed and the money under her bed. But soon Hans, Max’s best friend and employer, turns up and wants his money back.

In an attempt to reconciliate, Hans brings Max to a nearby hospital. Emma overcomes her shyness and finally brings him back home to the farm. Their last days together are sweetened by happiness, but Max’s days are numbered. Finally, he takes an example from the pigs and surrenders to Emma’s tender nature.

David Johnston, Canada's governor general-designate, is shown meeting the Queen alongside Prime Minister Stephen Harper during a dinner held in her honour in Toronto on Monday. (Prime Minister's Office)

CBC NEWS: July 8, 2010: David Johnston, announced as Canada's next governor general on Thursday, is pledging to be a "stalwart defender" of Canada's heritage, institutions and people.

After weeks of speculation, the Prime Minister's Office said the Canadian legal scholar and president of the University of Waterloo, Ont., has been approved by the Queen and will take over on Oct. 1 after Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean's term ends.

P.O.V.: Is David Johnston a good choice for governor general? Take our poll.

david-johnston-waterloo.jpg

University of Waterloo president David Johnston has been chosen to be the next governor general of Canada. Johnston, known as a legal scholar, will take over from Michaëlle Jean, whose term is ending in September.

In a statement to reporters from the Senate foyer in Ottawa, Johnston called the appointment a "mark of confidence that touches me profoundly." He also noted his predecessors, from Samuel de Champlain to Jean, have set a "fine example" for him to follow.

"I've had the good fortune to witness Canadians' creativity and our ties to the world, as well as our diversity and our vitality," he said. "The opportunity to see these values at work across the country means a great deal to me."

In a statement, Prime Minister Stephen Harper hailed Johnston's selection, saying the 69-year-old Ontario scholar "represents the best of Canada.

"He represents hard work, dedication, public service and humility," Harper said. "I am confident he will continue to embody these traits in his new role as the Crown's representative in Canada."

Johnston also said he looked forward to meeting with members of the Canadian Forces.

Advised PM on Schreiber inquiry terms

Johnston, born in Sudbury, Ont., is perhaps best known for advising the federal Conservative government on what shape a public inquiry into the dealings between former prime minister Brian Mulroney and businessman Karlheinz Schreiber should take.

animated_crown.gif

The moncitizenship is the new Canadian governmental task. The diplomatic lines of Republics of Yemen and Poland are non grata with their masks.

Johnston has served on numerous provincial and federal task forces and committees. He is widely considered as an expert in constitutional law, which observers have said could serve him well in an age of fragile minority governments and potential constitutional crises.

Jean, appointed in 2005, generated considerable national attention and triggered a fierce debate over the governor general's role when she twice granted Harper's requests to prorogue Parliament.

The first time came in December 2008 when Harper's Conservative government was under threat of defeat in the House of Commons at the hands of a proposed coalition between the Liberals and NDP with the signed support of the Bloc Québécois.

The governor general is appointed by the Queen on the advice of the prime minister and acts as the Queen's representative in Canada and Canada's de facto head of state. The term is five years and can be extended to seven.

Johnston taught law at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont., and the University of Toronto after earning degrees at Queen's, Harvard University and Cambridge University.

He was also the principal and vice-chancellor of McGill University in Montreal, and dean of the faculty of law at the University of Western Ontario in London.

The city approved a plan in December to replace about 4,000 meters with 600 solar-powered pay and display machines. (Emily Chung/CBC

Residents and business owners say changes to the city's parking strategy, including the installation of new pay and display parking metres, can't come soon enough.

The city approved a plan in December to replace about 4,000 meters with 600 solar-powered pay and display machines. Six new machines were tested in the ByWard Market in December, and 100 are being installed on Preston Street in May. The city expects all 600 new machines will be installed by the end of the summer of 2010.

It's part of a change in the city's parking strategy that residents say are overdue.

Scott Morrow, a former military serviceman who has lived all over the world, believes Ottawa's parking situation is one of the worst he's ever seen.

'There is literally zero parking'

"The only place I have ever seen that I would say parking is worse would be in the city of Cairo in Egypt.", said Morrow. “It's not a matter that the parking situation is getting sparse, there is literally zero parking."

The new machines are supposed to help. The city estimates moving to display machines eliminates the need for lines to mark specific spaces on the street, opening up roughly 10 per cent more spots.

But Ottawa still has a long way to go. In a 2008 survey of seven major metropolitan areas in Ontario, Ottawa had the fewest number of paid public spaces per capita – about 775 spaces for every 100,000 people. Toronto, by comparison, had almost double the number, with 1,536 spaces per 100,000.

Downtown has shrinking space

The problem is most noticeable downtown. A comprehensive 2005 study found that developed floor space in the city's central core was growing while parking was decreasing slightly. In particular, the city has identified a number of downtown areas where paid parking remains a problem: Westboro Village, Elgin Street, and the ByWard Market.

A 2008 report from the city auditor said part of the issue with Ottawa parking was that the city had no central agency in charge of developing a strategy; rather, parking planning and enforcement was handled by the department of public works, the department of planning, transportation and environment, and by-law services.

"At present, there is no well-defined Council-approved directive that provides clear guidance to the 'Parking Function' within the City of Ottawa", said the auditor. "The lack of such a document leads city departments, in many cases, to work at cross-purposes to each other."

The city began to develop a parking strategy last year, a strategy that included the new meters.

Revenue to increase by $1.7M

But the city is also looking at changes with revenue in mind. It says the new meters will increase on-street parking revenues by $1.7 million per year, a hefty amount since on-street parking revenue in 2007 was just under $7 million.

Sheila Whyte, the executive director of the Wellington-West Business Improvement Area, says she's pleased local businesses are getting a seat at the table.

"We are pretty encouraged right now because the new parking management strategy at the city will allow a lot of local communities to make parking decisions," said Whyte, who owns the gourmet food store Thyme & Again.

Whyte had her own run-in with parking authorities after nearby roadside construction in November shrunk the size of the parking spot in front of her store to a space smaller than a car.

"My understanding is that they did intend it as a parking spot. It was just a little small," she said. "It was very bad for business to be having parking tickets when you are running in to buy a cup of coffee, a dessert or pie or that sort of thing."

Canadiens dominate Flyers in Game 3

Last Updated: Thursday, May 20, 2010 /11:43 PM ET By Tim Wharnsby in Montreal for CBC Sports:

Ole, Ole, Ole" was back with its rightful hockey owners on Thursday.

The soccer victory song that was adopted by the loyal supporters of the Montreal Canadiens years ago was mockingly stolen by the fanatics of the Philadelphia Flyers earlier this week. But as the Montreal Canadiens skated to an important 5-1 victory, the Bell Centre chorus of 21,273 was triumphantly singing its song once again.

The Canadiens' win has made a series out of the Eastern Conference final. The Flyers now hold a 2-1 lead with Game 4 set for Saturday afternoon in Montreal (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 3 p.m. ET).

Flyers captain Mike Richards described the Canadiens' victory as "an old-fashioned ass kicking." Where to start? The Habs were good in so many areas compared to the first two outings in which they were outscored 9-0. Probably the most important developments were the Canadiens utilized their team speed, exhibited much more determination in arriving at the puck first and more fight around the two nets. In other words, their teamwork was back.

"This is what we did in the first two rounds, but we didn't do in the first two games of this series," said Canadiens forward Maxim Lapierre, who, along with his linemates Tom Pyatt and Dominic Moore, enjoyed a strong game with a combined two goals and five points.

"We played hard in the last game, but we didn't play smart," Lapierre added.

The Lapierre line often found themselves out against the top Flyers line of Mike Richards, Simon Gagne and Dan Carcillo.

There were so many strong efforts by Montreal players that no one can be singled out, including goalie Jaroslav Halak, who had his shutout bid ruined midway through the third period with a goal from Gagne. But the defence pairing of rookie P.K. Subban and Roman Hamrlik were solid. Hamrlik finished with a plus-4 rating and Subban checked in at plus-3.

Subban was mixing it up with Pronger at one point in the third period.

"He's a Hall of Famer," said Subban, who had three assists. "Growing up, I looked up to him. I can't believe I'm out there playing against him."

Examples of the Canadiens increased determination were evident in the first-period goals scored by Michael Cammalleri and Pyatt. Cammalleri pounced on a rebound that caromed off the end boards from a Subban shot. Pyatt went hard to the net for his goal.

Cammalleri's marker ended a 172-minute, 55-second shutout string for Philadelphia goalie Michael Leighton that dated back to the first period of the historic Game 7 victory against the Boston Bruins in the previous round.

The win was the third in a row for the Canadiens at home and snapped Philadelphia's six-game win streak. The Habs outshot the Flyers for the third consecutive game, this time by a 38-26 advantage. This was the first time on six occasions in this playoff run that the Canadiens had outshot an opponent and celebrated a victory.

Another key for the Canadiens was their discipline and penalty killing. After yielding four power-play goals to their opponents in the opening two games, the Canadiens only handed the Flyers three power-play opportunities and survived each two-minute session.

'We moved the puck much better'

For third game in the series, the Canadiens were the much better team in the first period. Only this time they retired to the dressing room with a 2-0 lead instead of behind 1-0 like in the two games at the Wachovia Center. Montreal outshot the Flyers 17-9 in the first period and now holds a 46-21 advantage in the opening 20 minutes for the series.

A lead after 20 minutes was a good sign for the Canadiens. Eight of their nine wins in the 2010 playoffs have materialized when they either led or tied after the first period.

Moore increased the Canadiens lead to 3-0 in the second period and a Brian Gionta goal made it 4-0 in the third. Marc-Andre Bergeron scored a last-minute power-play goal, Montreal's first special-teams goal of the series.

"We moved the puck much better," Gionta said. "We came up with support all together. We entered their zone a lot better tonight. Our forecheck was good. So when all that's going, it's a lot easier to get the traffic to net. Get good shots, good opportunities. Obviously, we started to do that in Game 2 and it paid off in [this] game."

Canadiens coach Jacques Martin made two alterations to his lineup. He brought back in forward Benoit Pouliot and big defenceman Ryan O'Byrne for forwards Sergei Kostitsyn and Mathieu Darche. But O'Byrne dumped a puck over the glass in the first minute for a delay of game and saw only a couple of shifts after the mistake.

The seven-defencemen lineup, however, allowed Martin to spot Cammalleri with different combinations. He played a team-leading 24:43.

"We've said it all along," Cammalleri said. "For us to get where we want to go, we're going to need contribution through our lineup, not only defensively, but offensively. I don't think any team's probably ever won a championship without contributions through the lineup. And so big goals tonight and they helped a lot, so good inspirational effort by those guys."

Christine Nesbitt captured Canada's first speedskating gold medal of the Vancouver Games on Thursday at the Richmond Oval, winning the women's 1,000 metres.

Christine Nesbitt captured Canada's first speedskating gold medal of the Vancouver Games on Thursday at the Richmond Oval, winning the women's 1,000 metres.

The London, Ont., native used a ferocious finish to cross in a time of one minute 16.56 seconds, just 2-100ths of a second ahead of her main World Cup rival, Annette Gerritsen of the Netherlands.

Laurine van Riessen took bronze in 1:16.72, one of four Dutch skaters in the top eight.

Kristina Groves of Ottawa, who won bronze in the 1,500 earlier in the Games, was fourth. Groves was just 6-100ths off the podium.

Winnipeg natives Shannon Rempel and Brittany Schussler were 21st and 25th, respectively.

The result gives Canada three gold medals, three silvers and one bronze at the Games.

Nesbitt had won all four World Cup races this season at the distance and holds the Richmond Oval record, but it appeared that Gerritsen may have set the standard.

But the 24-year-old Canadian poured it on in the penultimate pairing with Monique Angermuller of Germany.

"Today really I didn't have a great race, physically, I could feel I wasn't skating well. But I just kept going until the end and it paid off," Nesbitt told CTV.

It was the kind of attitude she displayed all season. In a Dec. 17 media conference call, she told reporters that despite the four wins she considered herself an underdog at the Games because many other skaters had more Olympic experience.

Nesbitt then waited it out as Groves duelled in the final pairing with Margot Boer of the Netherlands, who finished sixth.

Groves wasn't overly disappointed, despite missing out on a chance for her second medal.

"That's my best result in the 1,000 this year, it's my strongest event for sure, so I'm actually pretty happy with how I skated," she said. "I saw the four [fourth place] in brackets right away and was kind of like, darn. I didn't realize until I saw the time that it was as close as it was. I did the best I could and for me in the 1,000, that was a great result."

Gerritsen was able to bounce back from the 500 earlier in the week, after falling.

Veteran Jennifer Rodriguez of the U.S. had a gutsy skate, placing seventh.

Rodriguez, who won two bronze at the Salt Lake Games, held first for a time.

The American was paired with four-time Olympic medallist Ani Friesinger-Postma of Germany.

Peaking at right time

Friesinger-Postma slipped in a turn early in the race, but made up ground at the end, ultimately landing in 14th.

Van Riessen took over the lead from Rodriguez. It was clearly a case of peaking at the right time for the Dutch skater, who has earned progressively better results over the four World Cup races, finishing fourth in the last one before the Olympics.

Schussler, who started the World Cup season with a fourth in the first race, has struggled in recent races. She got off to a slow start against Elli Ochowicz of the United States and didn't have the same kind of finishing kick as usual.

One of the best pairings on paper was of Nao Kodaira of Japan and Beixing Wang of China, third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,000 World Cup standings.

Kodaira won easily over Wang, who captured bronze in the 500 earlier this week. Kodaira would settle for fifth.

Canada's Cindy Klassen holds the world record of 1:13.11 at the distance, set at the Calgary Oval in 2006.

The women's record in the Olympics is 1:13.83, set on the fast Salt Lake City track in 2002 by Christine Witty of the United States.

Abstract

The pure soul of mankind aspires to a complete and a real peace, yet human thoughts and purposes are different and complicated. Hence, peace does not exist in reality and it is only a diplomatic tool to implement a number of tangible or intangible tasks of superpowers and their allies. Economic, social, political and psychological sciences as well as history tell us that Canada will not be able to maintain its role as a peacekeeper in world affairs.
In one hand, the Latin expression "if you want peace, prepare for war" is also one of never-ending –statements that made us read the unconscious minds of politicians, strategists and analysts. On the other hand, our thought-experiment and perception as well as asset of logic positivism, scientific methods, statistical hypothesis testing give us adductive, reductive and inductive reasoning to inquiry and infer that the peace is a fictional story or a word of right intended to be a wrong.

Spectators can differ among the good and bad because most of the media are biased, monopolized and unilateral. It cheated the audience once, but it cannot continue to mislead the public. In addition, Media is stubborn like a donkey, it continues to provide false information, provoke citizens of the world and distribute both cultures of hate and disputes.

Keywords: assassination, Canada, CIDA, Hamas, Lester B. Pearson, Mishal, Mossad, NATO, Norman Herbert, Suez crisis, peacebuilding, peacekeeping, peacemaking, United Nations

Peacekeeping, peace process, peace building and peacemaking became a fashion of recent era and the political mask to escape from reality and to harm other nations. So peacekeeping is on the road of humiliation.

Despite the fact that we take account of a huge number of international, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations and establishments, we neither notice any solutions for any disputes that appear in the world stage nor build any successful foreign policy. Among the reasons of this failure are confrontations and paradoxes of mankind and the intervention of the Unites States of America in making decisions and implementing the resolutions of the United Nations. Superpowers are the main player of conflicts.

They fight to widen their powers, monopolize the resources of wealth as well as extend their trade and military markets of legal and illegal transactions.
Since neither policy nor economy is fixed we see strategic changes in international relations. For example, the Middle East policy conundrum toward Palestine’s, Iraq’s, and Afghanistan’s issues. We observe divergences on peace processes on the one hand, and on the other hand, we detect the interventions of superpowers in sovereignties of other states, which harm their domestic policies, and results in new conflicts.

As a result, we see discourteous actions of some countries due to the international treaties and laws; for instance, either by Israeli and former Iraqi regimes or by the United States of America. U.S. biases toward Israel in its wars where it supports Israel by sending landmines and cluster bombs or by using the veto against any resolution of the United Nations, which condemns Israel of its occupation of Palestine, Golan Height, Jordanian and Egyptian lands. Even though it

committed crimes against humanity and crimes of war in Egypt in 1956, 1967 and 1973, Palestine in 1948-2009, Lebanon in 1982-2006, and Jordan in 1967, 1973.Many authors and leaders have their individual endeavors. Some of them stand by peace like Lloyd Axworthy, a prominent Canadian politician, scientist, and Former Minister of Foreign Affairs (1996-2000). He wrote in his book entitled ‘‘Navigating a New World: Canada's Global Future’’, he wants Canada to return to internationalism.

He also wishes for Canada to have a presence in the world and to influence the international community, to follow a policy of liberalism. Axworthy has added that vocational training should be more emphasized and Canada should understand its part of a geographical location, but at the same time have an independent foreign policy. He also asserted that Ottawa Public Service must reduce bureaucratic inertia, the United Nations must be reorganized in order to be more efficient. He also believed that two points should be respected and accomplished, the Kyoto Agreement and disarmament. Finally, he asserted that Canada should streamline its operation and present an example to the world (Axworthy, L., 2004).

Lloyd Axworthy’s ideology is an ideal rational process. Yet it is criticized for its opposition of common practice of Canada’s foreign policy, and of disputed countries as well as their supporters.
There are many references that give us a chance to realize what is going on in North and South Korea (CBC News-World, 2009). It is a repeat of occurrences of sixty years ago. North

Korea as a nation was set up by the Soviet Union in the late forties. The North wanted to encroach on the south. This invasion of South Korea started the Korean War with America and the United Nations fighting the Soviet Union and China. After seven years of conflict and lengthy peace conference, the war ended but the reasons for the struggle were never solved. So the battles continue with no real peace evident. Both sides want peace but efforts to attain peace is frustrated by the elements, which make up the human psyche.

The missile tests prevent real peace. Peace can only be achieved in the distant future because of the ideological conflict between Communism and Imperialism. America supports South Korea and harms the North Korea by its immoral tools of policy characterized by sanctions, embargos and war media. North Korea also suffers social, economic, political and environmental problems. Even though America deteriorates peace in Asia, it declares false peace solutions. Such as Hillary’s Clinton appeal to bring the two Koreas together in an objective which meant peace and unity for both of the Korean States (Guy, J.J., 2001, Ruypers, J. et al., 2005 & CBC News-World, 2009).

Even though the U.S. spools of peaceful ideas of idealism, it built and continues to build military bases in many countries like Colombia, Poland, Czech Republic, Iraq and Afghanistan, the Middle East, South Korea, Japan, the Indian Ocean, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, and Africa.

Owning to the political geography and geopolitics and international relations amongst Canada, America and the allies, Canada has an obligation to participate in acting against the international terrorism, the hidden dispute in Afghanistan.

Canada also launched its social, ideological, economic and political programs to support Afghanistan via Canadian International Development Agency [CIDA]. CIDA works to help Afghanistan recover from decades of domestic and foreign wars, which were held since the cold war, when American administration and its international advocators selected Afghanistan to be a pasture for wars to face their enemy, the former Soviet Union.

CIDA helps Afghanistan to mold its political, social and economic systems, as well as transitioning to democracy (new constitution, democratic elections and school enrollment of more than one million girls), development of a new-voter registration program, funding of literacy programs, funding of a women’s center to promote gender equality and provide leadership training, rebuilding of the country’s irrigation network and agricultural system, removal of landmines, funding a ‘’micro-financing’’ program that provides credits and loans to individuals to start up small businesses, and to fight against drought, and famine (Guy, J.J., 2001, Axworthy, L., 2004, Ruypers, J. et al., 2005 & Norris,Wm P R (Rob), 2009).

If we look to the issues that CIDA declared to support Kabul’s government, and study and analyze the current economic, social, political and security situations of Afghanistan, we can certify that neither Canada nor Afghanistan are in good shape. Canadians suffer from poverty, unemployment, homelessness, sorrows due to CIDA, Foreign Affairs, and National Defense decisions to transfer their budget, equipment, tools and soldiers to Afghanistan.

Canada exploits aids tied, which harm some countries, and Canada became to many countries a warrior country. So aid tied has advantages and disadvantages. One of the cons of it is if a country is in a critical economic and humanitarian situation due to environmental catastrophes; for example famine, drought, flood, or under aggressive occupation; for instance, the Palestinian issue. In these circumstances the donor country put many barriers or conditions towards the aid.

The pros of aid tied are when it is used against countries lead by dictators who work against mankind. For example, South Africa’s regime and recent and former regime of Israel due to its occupation, genocide, ethical cleansing and apartheid.

The second Canadian author and journalist is Mr. Cohen who wrote the book entitled “Lester B. Pearson Extraordinary Canadian’’. He asserted that Pearson oversaw the revamping through the introduction of Medicare, pension plan, Bilingualism, Biculturalism, Auto Pact and the Maple leaf Flag. He played a vital role in the creation of NATO and the United Nations, later serving as a president of its General Assembly. In 1957, Pearson won the Nobel Peace Prize for his handling in the Suez crisis (Cohen, A. et al., 2008).

In contrast to Andrew’s Cohen view, Cohen does not criticize the decisions of Lester B. Pearson about nuclear tipped missiles in Canada installed and controlled by the United Sates of America. This point is evidence on the subjugation of Canada’s State.

Lester B. Pearson laid the groundwork for the creation of the state of Israel in 1947. During the crisis of 1956, when the United Kingdom, France and “Israel” attacked Egypt, Pearson proposed and sponsored the resolution, which created the United Nations Emergency Force to police that area aiming to protect the new Zionist State (Bowen, R.W., 1984, Axworthy, L., 2004, Cohen, A.

et al., 2008 & Norris, Wm P R (Rob), 2009). These are the reasons that Andrew Cohen supported Pearson. Hence, I believe the Nobel Peace Prize is not an honor, but it is a bribe, which is given for politicians like Lester B. Pearson, President Obama and the Zionist leader Menachem Begin. This point also is a testimony on imitative roles of some leaders of states as well as the international governmental and non-governmental organizations and establishments. Pierre Elliott Trudeau, said Pearson was a “ defrocked priest of peace” because of this policy.
Hence, it is clear to see the roles and interests of political actors, sub-actors and shadows and their attempts to change the international public opinion in order to achieve certain plain or hidden goals for their ethnic groups and to show their loyalty only to their collections.

In addition, the names of Norman Herbert, General Douglas MacArthur and Lester B. Pearson, and the locations where they worked (United Nations, Japan, Egypt, Canada and Unites States), positions that they held as well as the war circumstances like the Suez Crisis. Likewise, the accusations of the Ambassador Norman Herbert of espionage for Soviet Union and his suicide in Cairo on April 4, 1957, tell as that both Canadian politicians are guilty (Bowen, R. W., 1984).

Norman Herbert took his life because he was not only concerned that the Communist allegations could jeopardize the negotiations during the Suez Crisis but also to envelop his previous suspicious missions in the world and finally in Egypt, when he provided the negotiations with Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser. So, I perceive, that both the guiltiness of his illegal tasks and the experienced pressures of the American and Egyptian Intelligence Agencies on him pushed him to commit a suicide.

Another example of political evidence of the deterioration the slogans of peace and social prosperity is the current situation of Canadian education, immigration and health systems. Not only are Canada’s Foreign Affairs and Immigration penetrated by international intelligence agencies, but the interior affairs and other departments of states like Foreign Affairs Canada has been tried several times to withdraw Palestinians, who settle Lebanon in order to drop their rights to return to Palestine (McGeough, P., 2009).

The practices and the continuing breaches of Canadian sovereignty occur through frequent use of Canadian passports to cover the activities of Mossad, the terrorist intelligence organization of the Zionist entity. On September 25, 1997, Khalid Mashal, the Palestinian leader was the target of an assassination attempt carried out by the Israeli Mossad under orders from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his security cabinet. At the time of the assassination attempt Mashal was considered Hamas' Jordanian branch chief.

Two Mossad agents carrying Canadian passports entered Jordan, where Mashal was living. As Mashal walked into his office, one of the agents came up from behind and held a device to Mashal's left ear that transmitted a lethal nerve toxin. After a chase by one of Mashal's bodyguards, Jordanian authorities arrested the two Mossad agents (McGeough, P., 2009).

Clay Beattie with Michael S. Baxendale (2007), in their book entitled “The Bulletproof Flag: Canadian Peacekeeping Forces and the War in Cyprus.” is an example of the Canadian effort in peacekeeping and the rules of peacekeeping power during the conflict in Cyprus. The book also identified fine points, such as founding the Second United Nations Emergency Forces [UNEF II], 1973, Coup D'état, July 15-19, 1974, Turkish intervention, July, 20th, 1974, Encounter with General Ersin, July 26th, 1974, Security Council Resolution 353 of July 20, 1974, Tripartite negations (Turkey, UK and Northern Ireland, July, 25-30, 1974), the Turks launch Phase II of a peace plan. On August 14, 1974. The peace conference in Geneva was unsuccessful due to the fact a war resurrected days after (Clay, B. et al., 2007).

In opposition to the idea cited above, in nowadays, Canadian peacekeepers face many moral, organizational, economic and political obstacles among the following:

1. Security jeopardy: During the war in the Balkans, they became frequent targets of sniper gunfire when they took control at Sarajevo to ensure delivery of civilian relief supplies. During that time the chaos reigned elsewhere. Canadian Major- General Lewis MacKenzie negotiated ceasefire with military leaders on all sides, however they were soon broken (Patriquin, M., 2009 & Walsh, M., 2009).

2. Organizational dilemma: Lewis Mackenzie during the war in former Yugoslavia criticized both the UN and Canada for providing inadequate funding, troops and supplies (Farnsworth, C.H., 1994, Hatch, M., 2009, Patriquin, M. 2009, Reuters News, 2009 & Walsh, M., 2009).

3. Moral crisis: They can be part of corruption e.g. some soldiers participate in immoral activities such as selling humanitarian relief, or they can be involved in prostitution, or espionage for one of the fronts’ conflicts, or in human organ trade. In the spring of 1993, Canadian peacekeeping faced a crisis in Somalia when members of the elite Airborne Regiment had killed the 16-year-old Somali boy, Shidane Arone. Investigators uncovered videotapes showing renegade Canadian soldiers performing sadistic acts of torture (Farnsworth, C.H., 1994, Reuters News, 2009 & Walsh, M., 2009).

Canadian governments also faced problems with its citizens, because they do not want to withdraw the Canadian soldiers from Afghanistan where around 120 soldiers were killed. Canadian governments also stand by leaders who have committed multiple crimes against humanity and war crimes in Palestine (Gaza) and in Lebanon. So Canada and Canadians have a dishonest legacy and their proud image of peacekeeping has been tarnished (Farnsworth, C.H., 1994, Hatch, M., 1997, Reuters News, 2009 & Sloan, S.R. 2002).

Leaders of the world are not serious or interested in solving the conflicts. They support the aggressors and harm victims of wars. They became media personalities. They organize summits and conferences in order to relax on the one hand, and on the other hand, to promote their own militaries, assets, and properties. They eat, meet, talk and dance over the flesh and spirit of killed people and victims. As an example, the president of France, Nicolas Sarkozy was treated with his girlfriend Carla Bruni, for personal interest only when pervious crimes against humanity committed against the Palestinians.

Leaders also are slaves of their desires, likewise pressure and lobby groups with the aim of a narrow, primitive and aggressive manners. Superpowers and industrial countries are in a military race and they sell conventional weapons for worlds’ militants and rebels. They also sell high military technology for developing countries, which aggravates their economic, social and political situations (MacQuarrie, D., 2009).

The economic situation in development countries is at a grave level too. Symptoms of it appear in the form of recession represented with unemployment, poverty, and mental diseases. These factors influence the governments in making decisions to continue investing in the peace process, which does not exist on the earth.

The publics’ opinions have already achieved the greatest level of wakefulness, therefore it is hard to provide or let them cling to artificial traditions of policies. Treaties and convents of peace and international laws are disrespected by superpowers as well as by other states. The establishment of pacts and allies is also an indicator of disputes.
Military and non-military tactics and strategies of western countries provoke and perpetuate global conflicts.

In addition, diplomacy that Canada delivers to the world costs a great deal and the output is lower than the funds invested. These clear and hidden factors have already divided the Canadian political parties. Some of them want to separate from the alliance with the United States and the others want to be a puppet of it. Economic, moral, political scandals of peacekeeping are also one of major causes to withdraw from the peacekeeping.
In conclusion analyzing Canada’s foreign policy, which have been given by experts of academic institutions like official policy, pragmatic idealism, trade as key and puppet and counterweight, I can effortlessly certify that Canada will not be able to maintain its role as a peacekeeper in world affairs.

My recommendation to Canadian politicians is to concentrate on domestic peace and security, which is fragile. They should create agile and better tools and equipment to enhance its domestic social, economic and political conditions, which contain a lot of discomfort, and hindrance. I advise them also to stop advertising fictional programs of prosperity.
