KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A Canadian Forces colonel has become the latest casualty of Canada's mission in Afghanistan, and the highest-ranking soldier to give his life for the mission since it began in 2002.

Military officials at Kandahar city said Col. Geoff Parker, 42, a member of the Royal Canadian Regiment who was born and raised in Oakville, Ont., died when a massive car bomb struck a NATO convoy on the edge of the Afghan capital of Kabul.

A biography on the Department of National Defence website said Parker was commanding officer of 2nd Battalion, RCR, based at CFB Gagetown.

Parker was in Kabul to interact with international organizations there in an effort to prepare his team for their upcoming mission, Col. Simon Hetherington, deputy commander of Task Force Kandahar, told a news conference.

"He was a career infantry officer — a proud member of the Royal Canadian Regiment — who excelled in virtually every position he held in the Army," Hetherington said.

"As a battalion commander, he led his soldiers from the front and with distinction. The post he preparing to fill was important and of such high profile, he was hand picked from across the Army to do so. A rising star, his potential was undeniable."

Twelve Afghan civilians also died in the attack, many of them on a public bus in rush-hour traffic.

The attack — the deadliest for NATO troops in the capital since September — comes despite a ramped up effort by Afghan authorities to intercept would-be attackers and better secure a capital city that saw a spate of brazen attacks this winter.

Parker was the seventh Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan this year and the 145th Canadian soldier killed as part of the mission since it began eight years ago. Two civilians — diplomat Glyn Berry and journalist Michelle Lang — have also been killed.

In a statement that seemed more detailed and personal than those that usually accompany news of Canadian casualties, Hetherington described Parker as a fun-loving and admirable man who was well-loved within the ranks of the Canadian military.

"Geoff could be incredibly funny and he had a truly infectious laugh and smile; to some, he was simply known as "Parker," because that's what his wife called him," Hetherington said.

"We all knew him to be remarkably smart and the consummate professional officer. Equally important, he was always standing by as a friend. He knew when to give you the hard truth to get you going and when to lend a sympathetic ear."

The powerful blast occurred on a major Kabul thoroughfare that runs by the ruins of a one-time royal palace and government ministries. It wrecked nearly 20 vehicles, including five SUVs in the NATO convoy, and scattered debris and body parts across the wide boulevard. The body of woman in a burka was smashed against the window of the bus.

In the last such attack in February, suicide bombers stormed two small downtown hotels and killed 16 people.

U.S. forces spokesman Col. Wayne Shanks confirmed that five of the deaths were American.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told The Associated Press in a phone call from an undisclosed location that the bomber was a man from Kabul and his car was packed with 750 kilograms of explosives. The target of the attack was the foreign convoy, he said.

U.S. troops and Afghan police held a security cordon around wrecked vehicles at the blast site in the west of the city. Emergency workers zipped the dead into body bags and lifted the injured into ambulances.

"I saw one person laying on the ground with no head," said Mirza Mohammad, who was on his way to work when the blast happened up the road.

Police officer Wahidullah, who goes by one name, said he saw the body of woman in a burka smashed up against the window of the bus.

"Everywhere was dead bodies," Wahidullah said. At least 12 Afghan civilians died and 47 were wounded — most of them in the bus, the Interior Ministry said.

It was the deadliest attack for NATO in the capital since a September suicide bombing that killed six Italian soldiers. The attack comes as NATO readies a major offensive in the southern province of Kandahar, a major Taliban stronghold.

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen condemned the attack and said it would not deter NATO's efforts in Afghanistan.

"NATO remains committed to its mission to protect the Afghan people and to strengthen Afghanistan's ability to resist terrorism," Rasmussen said in Brussels.

President Hamid Karzai also condemned the attack.

"There were casualties among the NATO forces as well as among civilians — women, children and schoolchildren," Karzai told a news conference.

NATO said that five of its vehicles were damaged as well as more than a dozen civilian vehicles. There were no obvious military vehicles among the wreckage, but NATO troops often travel in unmarked SUVs in the capital.

The Feb. 26 attack against two residential hotels in the capital killed six Indians, along with 10 Afghans.

Afghan authorities blamed the attack on Lashkar-e-Taiba, the same Pakistan-based Islamist militia that India blames for the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks that killed 166 people.

Oil washes ashore in Louisiana wildlife refuge

The box was lowered by cable 1,500 metres underwater beginning late Thursday night. By dawn on Friday it

had been lowered about 1,200 metres, according to U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Shawn Eggert. It was lowered fully by just after noon ET.

The robots had earlier placed buoys around the leak to act as markers to help line up the 12-metre tall box, called a cofferdam, said Douglas Peake, the first mate of the supply boat that brought the box to the site.

But securing the box over the leaking pipe so far below the water's surface will take the robots hours — and require a feat of precision not previously seen. Robots are the only option because the water pressure that far below the surface is enough to crush a typical submarine.

We are essentially taking a four-storey building and lowering it 5,000 feet (1,500 metres) and setting it on the head of a pin," BP spokesman Bill Salvin said Friday.

Once it's in place, workers will have to install a riser pipe to funnel the leaking oil from the cofferdam to a barge on the surface.

The cofferdam is designed to trap the oil gushing out of one of two leaks from the undersea well and suck it up — like a vacuum — to a tanker on the water's surface.

The structure, which looks something like a milk carton, is seven metres by four metres in width and 12 metres tall, with a dome-like roof inside it.

Oil giant BP, which is in charge of the cleanup, hopes it will collect as much as 85 per cent of the almost 800,000 litres of crude that have been gushing out of the well daily for the last two weeks.

The leak is one of three that opened after the Deepwater Horizon oil rig leased by the multinational petroleum company exploded April 20, killing 11 people. The rig sank two days later 80 kilometres off the coast of Louisiana.

Crews waited hours before they began lowering the cofferdam, fearing that with the dangerous fumes rising from the oily water, a spark caused by the scrape of metal on metal could start a fire.

On Friday, a separate mission was close to getting underway to spray water around the rig and reduce the level of fumes.

Oil touches shore

Oil from the leak reached the shores of several barrier islands off the coast of Louisiana on Thursday, U.S., state and BP officials confirmed.

Cleanup crews found oil on a beach of the Chandeleur Islands, a small group of uninhabited islands 32 kilometres east of Louisiana.

Traces of oily sheen had been reported in Louisiana's coastal wetlands since April 29. This is the first confirmation by government officials that oil had washed ashore.

As of Friday, BP had laid more than 240,000 metres of boom in the hopes of containing oil on the water's surface before it floats to shore. But high winds and choppy waves rendered the boom almost ineffectual earlier this week.

BP has also conducted controlled burns of parts of the oil slick on open water, and deployed more than a million litres of chemical dispersants meant to break up the oil.

Several birds were spotted diving into the oily, pinkish-brown water, and dead jellyfish washed up on the islands.

The islands are part of the Breton National Wildlife Refuge, a nationally protected wilderness area. The protected area is a frequent home to 23 species of seabirds and shorebirds and a nesting place for 13 species, including brown pelicans, laughing gulls and sandwich terns, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

At the southernmost tip of the islands is Freemason Island, a long, barren stretch of sand held together by sea grass and shrubs. Paul Leblanc, who runs a fishing camp, first discovered the sludge-like substance there.

"It's horrible," Leblanc told CBC News as he approached the island in his boat Thursday. "This is what my livelihood depends on … fishing around these islands."

"I'm petrified," fellow camp owner Mark Stebley said. "This could ruin my entire way of life."

The project to widen Hazeldean Road will take about $65 million of federal stimulus money earmarked for Ottawa. (CBC)

A few major construction projects in Ottawa may not be completed before funding from the federal government's infrastructure spending program is cut off, a city official said Thursday.

Wayne Newell, Ottawa's director of infrastructure services, said nearly two-thirds of the $401 million in federal stimulus money earmarked for Ottawa has been committed, with 91 of the 115 projects tendered.

Work is also well underway to extend roads, renew infrastructure and expand cultural and recreational facilities across the capital, said Newell, who presented the update in a technical briefing for city councillors on Thursday.

But work on two major projects — the widening of Hazeldean Road and the extension of Terry Fox Drive — are expected to continue past March 2011, which is the deadline to be eligible for infrastructure money.

In those cases, the city will have to make up the difference for work done past the deadline, said Newell.

Don't rush work, construction group says

"At this point in time what we're projecting for those two projects combined is about $4.5 million in projects that won't be completed by the deadline," said Newell.

He said the city can cover the costs with money it was expecting to spend on infrastructure but didn't have to because of the federal stimulus funds.

While Newell doesn't foresee the deadline as a big issue, the National Capital Heavy Construction Association said it would like to see funding rules relaxed for projects already begun to ensure work isn't rushed in the event weather conditions cause delays.

"Does it make good sense to be putting the final lift of asphalt on a road with snow on the ground?" asked NCHCA spokesman Dale Harley. "And the answer to that is no."

The federal government hasn't given any indication it will alter the deadline, so the city is gearing up for what Newell said will be the most summer construction projects ever in the city.

Television stations were projecting a Conservative win based on exit polls suggesting the Tories have won the largest number of seats in Britain's national election, but will fall slightly short of a majority.

A BBC analysis suggested David Cameron's party will win 307 House of Commons seats, short of the 326 seats needed for a majority, according to results from a poll done for three broadcast networks.

Two scenarios could arise — Prime Minister Gordon Brown could resign if he feels the results have signalled he has lost his mandate to rule, or he could try to stay on as leader and seek a deal in which smaller parties would support him.

Millions of voters headed to polling stations Thursday to cast their ballots in a general election that was widely expected to be the closest race in years.

More than 44 million people had registered to vote in the election, in which voters were asked to pick both MPs for the 650-seat British Parliament and a number of local authorities.

One recent poll suggested that as many as 40 per cent of British voters began the day undecided, and many analysts have suggested that the United Kingdom could be facing its first minority, or "hung," Parliament in 36 years.

Recent polls suggested Cameron's Conservatives were the favourites to win, but observers were forecasting a tight three-party race after Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg performed well in televised debates.

Clegg, 43, was not widely expected to win the election, but analysts suggested he could hold the balance of power in a minority Parliament.

Britain's tabloids pulled the trigger in Thursday's race with the Daily Mirror running a picture of Cameron along with the words, "Prime Minister? Really?" The Sun, meanwhile, superimposed Cameron's face onto U.S. President Barack Obama's famous colour poster that read, "Hope."

Final push for votes

Brown, 59, touted his experience managing the economy throughout the campaign, but he struggled to recover after he was caught on tape referring to a voter as a "bigoted woman."

The incumbent leader made his final campaign speech in his native Scotland on Wednesday, urging supporters to return a Labour government that has been in power for 13 years.

Cameron, 43, continued his push for the Conservatives in the final days before the election, telling the BBC that he slept on his bus as he shuttled between campaign stops, saying he is going "all out" to win.

Clegg urged voters to vote for the Liberal Democrats, saying his party could deliver "real change, real hope, real fairness."

The United Kingdom hasn't had a minority government since 1974, when Prime Minister Edward Heath's Conservatives got fewer seats than Labour. Heath tried to form a coalition with the Liberals, but couldn't pull it together.

Heath resigned and the Queen gave Labour Leader Harold Wilson the chance to govern. Wilson's government lasted for about six months, until he called another election, which his party won.

Meanwhile, a light aircraft carrying a candidate for a minor party in the election crashed Thursday, but officials say the pilot and passenger survived with minor injuries.

Nigel Farage, a member of the UK Independence Party, was being treated at a hospital, said aide Chris Adams.

"He is OK so it's not life-threatening. The show goes on," Adams told BBC television.

Polling booths opened at 7 a.m. local time and will close at 10 p.m.

The merchants of war have done it again!

Derrière le président

Il fait un pas, referme sans y faire attention la porte derrière lui, et reste debout. Il voit une grande salle triste. À un bout de la salle, celui où il se trouve, des juges portant des robes usées ont l'air de penser à autre chose ou ferment les yeux. À l'autre bout, il y a des gens mal habillés, des avocats qui remuent, des soldats au visage dur, un plafond sale, des tables cou- vertes d'un drap jauni, des portes noircies par les mains, de mauvaises lampes quI fument.

Personne ne fait attention à lui. Tous les regards sont tendus vers un seul point, un banc de bois contre une petite porte, le long du mur, à gauche du prési- dent. Sur ce banc, mal éclairé, un homme est assis entre deux gendarmes. Il croit se voir lui-même, vieilli, non pas sans doute pareil de visage, mais tout pareil de corps, avec quelque chose de dur dans les yeux.

Au bruit de la porte, on se range pour lui faire place. Le président tourne la tête. Il comprend Hue la per- sonne qui vient d'entrer est M. le maire de Montreuil-sur-Mer. Ille salue. L'avocat du ministère, qui a rencontré M. Madeleine à Montreuil-sur-Mer où il a été plus d'une fois, le reconnaît et salue aussi. Lui s'en aperçoit à peine. Il regarde...

Des juges, un homme qui écrit, des gendarmes, beaucoup de têtes curieuses, il a déjà vu cela une fois, autrefois, il y a vingt-sept ans.

وراء كبير القضاة

قام بخطوة، وأعاد غلق الباب خلف دون أن ينتبه لذلك، وبقي واقفا. رأى قاعة كبيرة حزينة. في طرف القاعة، الطرف الذي كان يوجد فيه، قضاة في أثوابهم المهترئة كانوا يغلقون أعينهم.وفي الطرف الآخر، كان هناك أناس لا يحسنون ارتداء ملابسهم، ومحتمون يقومون ويقعدون، وجنود بأوجه قاسية، وسقف وسخ، وطاولات مغطاة بشرشف أصفر، وأبواب اسودت من ملامسة الأيدي، ومصابيح رديئة تدخن.

لم ينتبه إليه أحد. كانت كل الأنظار متجهة إلى نقطة واحدة، مقعد من خشب مدفوع على باب صغير، طول الجدار، إلى يسار قاضي القضاة.على هذا المقعد، المضاء بضوء خافت، كان رجل يجلس بين اثنين من رجال الدرك، فظن أنه يرى نفسه، وقد هرم، ليس مثله في الوجه دون شك، ولكن كل شيء مثله في الجسم، مع شيء من القسوة في العينين.

على مسمع الباب، تنحى الجالسون ليفسحوا له مكانا. أدار كبير القضاة رأسه، وفهم أن الشخص الذي دخل لتوه هو السيد رئيس بلدية مونترييْ-سير-مير، فحياه. وحياه أيضا بعد أن عرفه محامي الوزارة الذي التقى السيد مادلين في مونترييْ-سير-مير وإليها ذهب أكثر من مرة. هو قد تبينه بالكاد. كان ينظر…

قضاة، رجل كان يكتب، رجال درك، أناس فُضوليون، لقد رأى في السابق هذا مرة، في ما مضى، منذ سبعة وعشرين عاما.

Bamatabois est dans la salle, du côté des juges.

Au moment où il entre, l'affaire a commencé il y a trois heures et, depuis trois heures, on voit plier peu à peu sous un poids terrible un homme, un inconnu, une sorte d'être misérable.

« Nous ne tenons pas seulement un voleur de fruits, dit l'avocat général, nous tenons là un ancien prisonnier, un homme dangereux appelé Jean Valjean. La justice le cherche depuis longtemps. Il y a huit ans, en sortant de la prison de Toulon, il a volé. Il vient de recommencer. Condamnez-le pour le fait nouveau; il sera jugé pour le fait ancien. »

À ces paroles, 1 'homme paraît surtout étonné. Il fait des mouvements qui veulent dire non, ou bien il re- garde le plafond. Il parle avec peine, répond avec difficulté ; mais de la tête aux pieds, toute sa personne dit non. Il est comme un animal au milieu de ces gens qui l'ont pris. Le danger avance sur lui, et de plus en plus, de minute en minute.

في لحظة دخوله، كانت القضية قد بدأت منذ ثلاث ساعات، كانوا يرون رجلا ينحني قليلا قليلا تحت عبء هائل، رجلا مجهولا، نوعا من كائن بائس.

"نحن لا تقبض على لص للفاكهة فقط، قال المدعي العام، نحن نقبض هنا على سجين قديم، على رجل خطير اسمه جان فالجان.العدالة تبحث عنه منذ مدة طويلة، فمنذ ثماني سنوات عند خروجه من سجن طولون، سرق، وها هو يعيد ما فعله.أدينوه لفعلته الجديدة، وسيحاكم لفعلته القديمة.

كان الرجل يبدو مندهشا عند سماعه لهذه الكلمات، فقام بحركات تعني لا، أو أنه نظر إلى السقف. تكلم بعناء، وأجاب بصعوبة: ولكن من الرأس حتى أخمص القدمين، شخصه كله قال لا. كان كحيوان وسط أناس أمسكوا به دون أن يستطيع النجاة. زحف الخطر عليه، أكثر فأكثر ولحظة فلحظة.

En plus de la prison, la peine de mort paraît possible si on montre plus tard qu'il est Jean Valjean et qu'il a encore volé.

Son avocat parle assez bien. Il commence par expliquer le vol de pommes. Son client, qu'il continue à appeler Champmathieu, n'a été vu de personne sautant le mur ou cassant la branche.

« On l'a arrêté portant cette branche, mais il dit l'avoir trouvée à terre et ramassée. Sans doute cette branche a été jetée là. Sans doute il y a un voleur. Mais qui pourrait dire que ce voleur est Champmathieu ? »

L'avocat reconnaît que Champmathieu a vécu à Faverolles, qu'il y a travaillé, que quatre personnes' le recon- naissent pour être l'ancien prisonnier Jean Valjean; mais cela veut-il dire qu'il a volé des pommes ?

L'avocat général répond. Pendant que cet homme parle, Champmathieu écoute, la bouche ouverte, avec une sorte d'étonnement. De temps en temps il remue lentement la tête de droite à gauche et de gauche à droite pour dire qu'il n'est pas d'accord. C'est tout.

L'avocat finit en demandant une condamnation très dure. C'est pour le moment les travaux forcés à vie.

Le défenseur se lève de nouveau, commence par remercier « monsieur l'avocat général des choses qu'il a si bien dites », puis répond comme il peut, mais il faiblit.

اعترف المحامي أن شاماتيو عاش في فافرول، أنه عمل فيها، أن أربعة أشخاص عرفوا فيه السجين القديم جان فالجان؛ ولكن هل يعني هذا أنه سرق التفاح؟

أجاب المدعي العام، وبينما كان هذا الرجل يتكلم، كان شاماتيو يصغي فاغرا فمه بنوع من الدهشة. من وقت إلى آخر كان يحرك ببطء رأسه من اليمين إلى اليسار ومن اليسار إلى اليمين من أجل أن يقول إنه ليس موافقا. فقط.

أنهى المدعي العام طالبا إدانة قاسية جدا، وحتى تلك اللحظة الأشغال الشاقة مدى الحياة.

نهض محامي الدفاع من جديد، وبدأ يشكر "السيد المدعي العام للأشياء التي فاه بها على أحسن وجه"، ثم أجاب كما يحلو له، لكنه ضعف في حجته.

Regardez-moi

Alors le président fait lever Champmathieu et lui pose la question habituelle: « Avez-vous quelque chose à ajouter à votre défense? »

L'homme, debout, roule dans ses mains un vieux chapeau sale et semble ne pas entendre. Le président répète la question. Cette fois 1'homnie entend. Il paraît comprendre. n promène ses yeux autour de lui, regarde les gens qui l'entourent, les gendarmes, son avocat, les juges, pose son gros poing sur le bord du meuble placé devant son banc, regarde encore et, tout à coup, le regard sur l'avocat général, il se met à parler. n semble qu'il veut tout dire à la fois.

« J'ai à dire ça. Que j'ai été voiturier à Paris, même que c'est chez M. Baloup. Ça vous use vite un homme. À quarante ans, on est fini. Moi, j'en ai cinquante-trois. Avec ça j'ai ma fille qui lave à la rivière. Elle gagne un peu d'argent de son côté. À nous deux ça va. Elle a de la peine aussi. Toute la journée jus- qu'à mi-corps, à la pluie, à la neige, avec le vent qui coupe la figure. Son mari la bat. Elle meurt. C'était une brave fille. Voilà. Je dis vrai. Vous pouvez demander. Que je suis bête! Qui est-ce qui connaît le père Champmathieu? Pourtant je vous dis que M. Baloup... Voyez chez M. Baloup. Après ça, je ne sais pas ce qu'on me veut. »

L'homme se tait, et reste debout. Il a dit ces choses d'une voix haute, rapide, dure.

عند ذلك جعل كبير القضاة شاماتيو يقف وطرح عليه السؤال المعتاد: "هل لديك شيء تضيفه إلى دفاعك؟"

كان الرجل، وهو يقف، يطوي بين يديه قبعة قديمة وسخة، وكان يبدو عليه أنه لم يسمع. أعاد رئيس المحكمة السؤال.هذه المرة، سمع الرجل، وبدا أنه يفهم. أجال عينيه فيما حوله، ونظر إلى الناس الذين يحيطون به، رجال الدرك، محاميه، القضاة، ووضع قبضته الضخمة على حافة قطعة الأثاث الموضوعة أمام المقعد، نظر أيضا، و، فجأة، ونظره على المدعي العام، أخذ في الكلام. بدا أنه يريد قول كل شيء دفعة واحدة.

"هذا ما لدي قوله، إني كنت في باريس سائق عربة تجرها الأحصنة، حتى إن ذلك عند السيد بالو. هذا يجعلك تهرم بسرعة كإنسان. في سن الأربعين، تكون قد انتهيت. أنا في الثالثة والخمسين.ومع هذا لدي ابنتي التي تغسل في النهر، وتكسب من طرفها قليلا من النقود. علينا نحن الإثنين ماشي الحال. تشقى هي الأخرى. طوال النهار وهي غارقة إلى منتصفها، في المطر، في الثلج، مع الريح التي تقص الوجه. زوجها يضربها. ماتت. كانت بنتا شجاعة. هذا كل ما هنالك. إني أقول الحق. يمكنكم أن تسألوا. ما أغباني! من يعرف الأب شاماتيو؟ ومع ذلك أقول لكم إن السيد بالو… أنظروا عند السيد بالو. بعد هذا، أنا لا أعرف ما تريدون مني."

سكت الرجل، وبقي واقفا. قال هذه الأشياء بصوت عال، سريع، قاس.

Le président, homme attentif1 et bon, rappelle que « M. Baloup, son ancien patron d'après Champmathieu, n'a pu être retrouvé! » Puis, se tour- nant vers l'homme, il lui demande de s'expliquer clairement.

Champmathieu remue la tête de l'air d'un homme qui a bien compris et qui sait ce qu'il va répondre. Il ouvre la bouche, se tourne vers le président et dit: « D'abord... » Puis il regarde son chapeau, le plafond, et se tait.

« Faites attention, reprend l'avocat général. Vous ne répondez à rien de ce qu'on vous demande. Il est certain que vous êtes Jean Valjean, que vous avez volé des pommes dans un jardin. »

L'homme s'était assis. Il se lève tout d'un coup quand l'avocat général a fini, et s'écrie :

« Vous êtes très méchant, vous! Voilà ce que je voulais dire. Je n'ai rien volé. Je venais d'Ailly. J'ai trouvé une branche cassée par terre. J'ai ramassé la branche. C'est tout. Il y a trois mois que je suis en prison. On parle contre moi. On me dit : « Répondez ! Répondez donc ! » Je ne sais pas expliquer, moi. Je n'ai pas étudié. Je suis un pauvre homme. Voilà ce qu'on a tort de ne pas voir. Je n'ai pas volé. J'ai ramassé par terre des choses qu'il y avait. Vous dites Jean Valjean ! Je ne connais pas cette personne-là. J'ai travaillé chez M. Baloup, boulevard de l'Hôpital. J'ai été à Faverolles.

نظر من حوله، ولما رأى أن هناك من يضحك منه دون أن يفهم، أخذ بالضحك هو أيضا. لم يكن لهذا أية علاقة بما يسر…

رئيس المحكمة، رجل متفهم وطيب، أعاد أن "السيد بالو، معلمه السابق حسب شاماتيو لم يتمكنوا من العثور عليه!" ثم وهو يستدير نحو الرجل، طلب إليه أن يعلل ذلك بوضوح.

حرك شاماتيو رأسه كمن فهم جيدا وكمن يعلم ما سيجيب، فتح فمه، استدار نحو كبير القضاة وقال: "أولا…" ثم نظر إلى قبضته، إلى السقف، وأطبق على فمه السكوت.

"انتبه، عاد المدعي العام إلى القول. أنت لا تجيب بشيء كما يُطلب منك. أكيد أنك جان فالجان، وأنك سرقت تفاحا من حديقة."

كان الرجل قد جلس، فنهض دفعة واحدة عندما انتهى المدعي العام، وصاح:

" أنت شرير جدا، أنت! هذا ما كنت أريد قوله. لم أسرق شيئا. كنت آتيا من دايي، وجدت غصنا مكسورا على الأرض، فحملته.هذا كل ما هنالك.منذ ثلاثة أشهر كنت في السجن. الكل يتكلم ضدي، الكل يقول لي: "أجب! يالله أجب!" أنا لا أعرف كيف أشرح، أنا لم أدرس.إني رجل مسكين.والكل مخطئ ألا يرى.لم أسرق.حملت عن الأرض أشياء كانت هناك.تقولون جان فالجان!أنا لا أعرف هذا الشخص.عملت عند موسيو بالو، شارع الأوبيتال. كنت في فافرول.

« C'est vrai. Eh bien, est-ce qu'on ne peut pas avoir été à Faverolles sans avoir été en prison ? Je vous dis que je n'ai pas volé, et que je suis le père Champmathieu. Tout le reste, c'est des bêtises à la fin. Pourquoi êtes-vous tous contre moi?»

L'avocat général était resté debout; il s'adresse au président : « Monsieur le président, nous demandons que les condamnés Brevet, Cochepaille et Chenildieu soient appelés de nouveau. En attendant, je vais simplement rappeler ce que M. Javert a dit ici même. « Je connais très bien cet homme. Il ne s'appelle pas Champmathieu. C'est un ancien prisonnier. Il a volé depuis. Il a fait dix-neuf ans de travaux forcés pour vol. Je répète que je le reconnais. » Brevet, Chenildieu "et Cochepaille sont appelés de nouveau. « Regardez bien cet homme, et dites-nous si vous le reconnaissez pour votre ancien camarade de prison à Toulon, Jean Valjean. » Brevet le regarde, puis répond :

« Oui, monsieur le président. C'est moi qui l'ai reconnu le premier. Cet homme est Jean Valjean. Je le reconnais. Je suis sûr de moi.

- Allez vous asseoir », dit le président.

On fait entrer Chenildieu. Le président lui adresse à peu près les mêmes paroles qu'à Brevet. Chenildieu se met à rire.

« Si je le reconnais ! nous avons été cinq ans attachés à la même chaîne. C'est pas gentil de ne pas me reconnaître, mon vieux.

- Allez vous asseoir », dit le président.

Cochepaille est amené.

« C'est Jean Valjean, et même on l'appelait Jean le cric, tant il était fort », dit-il.

"هذا صحيح.وإذن، ألا يمكننا ألا نكون في فافرول دون أن نكون في السجن؟ أقول لكم إني لم أسرق، وإني الأب شاماتيو. الباقي، ليس غير ترهات في الأخير! لماذا أنتم كلكم ضدي؟"

بقي المدعي العام واقفا؛ توجه إلى الرئيس: "سيدي كبير القضاة، نطلب أن يُنادى على المدانين بروفيه، كوشباي وشونيلديو من جديد.بانتظار ذلك، سأذكّر ببساطة بما قاله السيد جافير هنا."أعرف جبدا هذا الرجل. إنه لا يُسمى شاماتيو، إنه نزيل حبس قديم، وقد سرق منذ ذلك الحين، فقضى تسع عشرة سنة مع الأشغال الشاقة من أجل سرقة.أكرر أني تعرفت عليه." نودي من جديد على بروفيه، شونيلديو وكوشباي.

"أنظروا جيدا إلى هذا الرجل، وقولوا لي إن كنتم تعرفون فيه رفيق سجن طولون القديم جان فالجان."

نظر بروفيه إليه، ثم أجاب:

"نعم، سيدي الرئيس، أنا من تعرفت عليه أول من تعرف. هذا الرجل هو جان فالجان، عرفته، أنا واثق مما أقول. - رح أقعد"، قال كبير القضاة.

أدخلوا شونيلديو، توجه إليه رئيس المحكمة بالكلمات نفسها التي توجه بها إلى بروفيه على التقريب، فأخذ شونيلديو يضحك."إذا ما عرفته!كنا خمس سنين مربوطين على نفس السلسلة. ليس لطيفا منك ألا تتعرف عليّ، يا صديقي. - رح أقعد"، قال كبير القضاة.

أحضروا كوشباي.

"إنه جان فالجان حتى إننا كنا ندعوه جان الرافعة بقدر ما كان قويا"، قال.

Il est sûr maintenant que l'homme est perdu. À ce moment, tout à côté du président, on entend une voix:

« Brevet, Chenildieu, Cochepaille, regardez de ce côté-ci. »

Tous ceux qui entendent cette voix se sentent glacés, tant elle est triste et prenante. Un homme, assis derrière le président, vient de se lever. Il est debout au milieu de la salle. Le président, l'avocat général, M. Bamatabois, vingt personnes le re- connaissent et s'écrient à la fois :

« M. Madeleine ! »

كان من المؤكد أن الرجل الآن سيدان.في تلك اللحظة، من جانب الرئيس، سمع الجميع صوتا:

"بروفيه، شونيلديو، كوشباي، أنظروا من هذه الناحية." أحس كل من سمع ذلك الصوت أنه جمد، بقدر ما كان حزينا وأخاذا.كان رجل يجلس خلف قاضي القضاة قد نهض لتوه، وها هو واقف في وسط القاعة. رئيس المحكمة، المدعي العام، السيد باماتابوا، وعشرون شخصا آخرون عرفوه، وصاحوا معا:

"السيد مادلين!"

Champmathieu de plus en plus étonné

C'est bien lui. Une lampe éclaire son visage. Il tient son chapeau à la main. Il n'y a aucun désordre dans ses vêtements. Toutes les têtes sont tournées de son côté, mais la voix a été si pressante, l'homme paraît si tranquille, qu'au premier moment on ne comprend pas qui a pu jeter ce cri.

Le président et l'avocat général n'ont pas le temps de dire un mot. Les gendarmes n'ont pas le temps de faire un mouvement. L'homme que tous appellent encore M. Madeleine, s'est déjà avancé vers Cochepaille, Brevet et Chenildieu.

« Vous ne me reconnaissez pas ? » dit-il.

Tous trois restent silencieux et répondent par un signe de tête que non. Cochepaille salue.

M. Madeleine se tourne alors vers le président et dit d'une voix douce :

« Monsieur le président, rendez la liberté à Champmathieu et faites-moi arrêter. L'homme que vous cherchez, ce n'est pas lui, c'est moi. Je suis Jean Valjean... »

Un silence lourd pèse de nouveau. On sent dans la salle cette sorte de peur qui prend les hommes quand quelque chose de grand se fait.

Le président, qui a un visage bon et triste, se penche vers l'avocat général. Il lui dit quelques mots.

Puis il demande d'une voix douce qui est comprise de tous :

« Y a-t-il un médecin ici? »

إنه هو، أضاء مصباحٌ وجهَهُ. حمل قبعة بيده، ولم يكن في ثيابه أي تنافر. استدارت كل الرؤوس ناحيته، لكن الصوت كان يريد أن يُسمع في الحال.بدا الرجل جِد هادئ لدرجة أن الحاضرين لم يفهموا في اللحظة الأولى من أمكنه إطلاق هذه الصرخة.

لم يكن لكبير القضاة ولا للمدعي العام الوقت ليفوها بكلمة، لم يكن لرجال الدرك الوقت ليقوموا بحركة.كان الرجل الذي سماه الجميع وما زالوا السيد مادلين قد تقدم نحو كوشباي وبروفيه وشونيلديو.

"ألا تعرفونني؟" قال.

بقي ثلاثتهم صامتين وأجابوا نفيا بحركة من الرأس. حيّا كوشباي.

عند ذلك استدار سيد مادلين نحو رئيس المحكمة وقال بصوت وادع:

"سيدي الرئيس، أعد الحرية لشاماتيو، واعمل على إيقافي. الرجل الذي تبحث عنه ليس هو، إنه أنا. أنا جان فالجان…"

ومن جديد حط صمت ثقيل. أحس الحاضرون في القاعة بذلك النوع من الخوف الذي يأخذ البشر عندما يحصل شيء جسيم.

انحنى الرئيس، الذي كان له وجه طيب وحزين، على المدعي العام، وقال له بضع كلمات.

ثم طلب بصوت وادع فٌهم من الجميع:

"هل يوجد طبيب هنا؟"

L'avocat général prend la parole :

« Messieurs, vous connaissez tous, au moins de nom, M. Madeleine, maire de Montreuil-sur-Mer. S'il y a un médecin parmi vous, nous lui demandons avec M. le président de bien vouloir emmener M. Madeleine et de le reconduire chez lui. »

M. Madeleine ne laisse pas finir l'avocat général. Voici ses paroles, telles qu'elles sont encore dans l'oreille de ceux qui les ont entendues :

« Je vous remercie, monsieur l'avocat général, mais je ne suis pas fou. Vous allez voir. Vous étiez sur le point de vous tromper. Laissez aller cet homme. Je suis Jean Valjean, ce malheureux condamné. Je dis la vérité. Vous pouvez m'arrêter, me voilà... Je me suis caché sous un faux nom; je suis devenu riche; je suis devenu maire; j'ai voulu rentrer parmi les bonnes gens. Il paraît que cela ne se peut pas... J'ai volé M. l'évêque, c'est vrai. J'ai volé un enfant encore, c'est vrai. Je n'ai plus rien à ajouter. Arrêtez-moi. Mon Dieu ! Monsieur l'avocat général, vous ne me croyez pas ! Voilà qui est triste. N'allez pas condamner cet homme au moins ! Quoi ! Ceux-ci ne me reconnaissent pas ! Je voudrais que Javert soit ici. Il me reconnaîtrait, lui! »

Rien ne peut rendre 1 la sombre tristesse des paroles de M. Madeleine... Il se tourne vers les trois prisonniers.

« Eh bien, je vous reconnais, moi. Brevet, vous rappelez-vous... »

Il s'arrête un moment et dit :

« Te rappelles-tu ce pantalon brun et jaune que tu avais en 1798? Je n'en ai jamais vu de pareil.»

"سادتي، تعرفون كلكم، بالإسم على الأقل، السيد مادلين، رئيس بلدية مونترييْ-سير- مير. إن كان بينكم طبيب، نطلب إليه مع السيد كبير القضاة أن يتفضل باقتياد السيد مادلين أو أن يرافقه إلى منزله."

لم يترك سيد مادلين المدعي العام أن ينهي كلامه. هذه كانت كلماته كما لم تزل بعد في أذن الذين سمعوها:

"أشكرك، يا سيدي المدعي العام، لكني لست مجنونا. سترون. أنا جان فالجان، هذا المدان التعس.أنا أقول الحقيقة.يمكنك إيقافي، أنا لك…خبأت نفسي تحت اسم مستعار؛ أصبحت غنيا؛ أصبحت رئيس بلدية؛ أردت الدخول بين الناس الصالحين.يبدو أن ذلك غير ممكن.سرقت السيد الأسقف، هذا صحيح.سرقت طفلا أيضا، هذا صحيح.ليس لدي بعد ما أضيف. أوقفني. يا إلهي! سيدي المدعي العام، أنت لا تصدقني! كم هذا حزين. لن تدين على الأقل هذا الرجل!ماذا! هؤلاء يمكنهم التعرف عليّ! كنت أتمنى أن يكون جافير هنا، سيتعرف عليّ هو!"

لا أحد يمكنه وصف الحزن القاتم لكلمات السيد مادلين… استدار نحو السجناء الثلاثة.

"وإذن، يمكنني التعرف عليكم أنا. بروفيه، أتذكر…"

توقف لحظة وقال:

"هل تذكر ذلك البنطال البني والأصفر الذي كان لك سنة 1798؟ لم أر مثله أبدا."

Brevet le regarde comme s'il avait peur. Lui continue:

« Chenildieu, tu as toute l'épaule droite brûlée profondément. Th as voulu faire disparaître les trois lettres T. F. P. qu'on y voit toujours cependant. Réponds, est-ce vrai ?

-C'est vrai », dit Chenildieu.

Il s'adresse à Cochepaille :

« Cochepaille, tu as écrit sur le bras gauche, en lettres bleues: 1er mars 1815. Relève ta chemise.»

Cochepaille relève sa chemise. Tous se penchent. Un gendarme apporte une lampe. On lit encore « mars 1815 ».

Le malheureux homme regarde les juges avec un sourire, le sourire de la joie et du désespoir à la fois.

« Vous voyez bien, dit-il, je suis Jean Valjean. »

Il n'y a plus, dans cette salle, ni juges ni gendarmes. Personne ne se rappelle plus ce qu'il devrait faire; le président oublie qu'il doit présider, le défenseur qu'il est là pour défendre. Chose frappante, aucune question n'est faite. Il est sûr que l'on a Sous les yeux Jean Valjean. Tous ont compris tout de suite cette simple et belle histoire d'un homme qui prend la place d'un autre pour que celui-ci ne soit pas condamné.

« Je ne vais pas déranger plus longtemps, reprend Jean Valjean. Je m'en vais si on ne m'arrête pas. J'ai plusieurs choses à faire. Monsieur l'avocat général sait qui je suis; il sait où je vais. Il me fera arrêter quand il voudra. »

نظر إليه بروفيه كما لو كان خائفا، والآخر يتابع:

"شونيلديو، لك كتف أيمن كله محترق شديد الإحتراق. أردت أن تعمل على إخفاء الحروف T. F. P. التي نراها دوما مع ذلك. أجب، هل هذا صحيح؟

- هذا صحيح"، أجاب شونيلديو.

نوجه إلى كوشباي:

"كوشباي، كتبت على ذراعك الأيسر بحروف زرقاء: أول مارس 1815. إرفع قميصك."

رفع كوشباي قميصه. انحنى الكل. أحضر دركيٌّ مصباحا. لم يزل المرء يقرأ "مارس 1815".

نظر الرجل التعس إلى القضاة بابتسامة، ابتسامة الفرح واليأس في آن.

"ترون جيدا، قال، أني جان فالجان."

لم يعد في تلك القاعة لا قضاة ولا رجال درك، لم يعد أحد يذكر ما عليه فعله؛ نسي الرئيس أن عليه أن يرأس، والمدافع الذي كان هناك ليدافع. والمدهش أن لا سؤال أُلقي. على التأكيد كان جان فالجان تحت أعين الجميع، وقد فهم الجميع في الحال تلك القصة البسيطة والجميلة لرجل يأخذ مكان آخر كيلا يدان.

"لن أزعجكم أكثر، عاد جان فالجدان إلى القول. سأذهب إن لم يوقفني أحد. لدي عدة أشياء أنجزها.يعرف السيد المدعي العام من أنا، ويعرف أين أذهب، فليأمر بإيقافي متى شاء."

Il marche vers la porte. Pas une voix ne se fait en- tendre, pas un bras ne se tend pour l'empêcher de sortir. Il traverse la salle à pas lents. On n'a jamais su qui a ouvert la porte, mais il est certain qu'elle se trouve ouverte quand il y arrive. Là, il se retourne et dit: « Vous tous, tous ceux qui êtes ici, vous me plaignez, n'est-ce pas ? Mon Dieu ! Quand je pense à ce que j'ai été sur le point de faire, je trouve que vous pouvez m'envier. »

Il sort, et la porte se referme comme elle a été ouverte, car ceux qui font certaines grandes choses sont toujours sûrs d'être servis par quelqu'un dans le peuple.

Moins d'une heure après, le nommé Champmathieu est libre. Il sort, croyant tous les hommes fous et ne comprenant rien à toute cette histoire.

سار نحو الباب.لا صوت سُمع، ولا ذراع امتدت لتمنعه من الخروج. قطع القاعة بخطوات بطيئة، ولم يُعرف أبدا من فتح الباب، ولكن على التأكيد كان مفتوحا عندما وصله.هناك استدار وقال:

"أنتم كلكم، كل الذين هم هنا، أنتم حزينون من أجلي، أليس كذلك؟ يا إلهي! عندما أفكر فيما كنت على وشك أن أفعله، أجد أن بإمكانكم أن تحسدوني على ذلك."

خرج، وانغلق الباب مثلما انفتح، لأن الذين يقومون ببعض الأعمال العظمى هم واثقون دوما بمن يخدمهم بين الناس.

أقل من ساعة فيما بعد، أُطلق سراح شاماتيو، فخرج وهو يظن أن سائر البشر مجانين، ولا يفهم شيئا من كل هذه القصة.
