The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh watch Big Red Mike win at the 151st running of the Queen's Plate at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto on Sunday.

July 4, 2010: CBC NEWS: The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh watched Big Red Mike win the 151st running of the Queen's Plate in Toronto on Sunday afternoon.

The Queen, an avid owner and breeder of horses, presented the trophy to the winning jockey, Eurico Rosa da Silva, and Big Red Mike's handlers from Terra Racing Stable.

She and Prince Philip arrived at Woodbine Racetrack in a horse-drawn carriage. It was her fourth trip to see North America's oldest continuously run stakes race, after visits in 1959, 1973 and 1997.

The royal couple, who were pulled down the track in a landau to applause and cheers from thousands of people at the track, spent some time in the walking ring before watching the running of the Queen's Plate.

For the first time, two women were in the jockey lineup, including Emma-Jayne Wilson, riding D's Wando.

"I'm honoured. My parents are from Britain and I've been to England a few times," Wilson, who was born and raised in Ontario, said before the race.

However, she added that she wouldn't be distracted by the presence of royalty.

"I hope I can enjoy it as best as I can, but I got a job to do, and I promise you, I'm going to be focused on my job," she said.

The Queen's Plate, commemorating a plate granted by Queen Victoria that was then valued at 50 guineas, is a 1¼-mile race for three-year-old Canadian thoroughbreds. Today, race winners get a gold cup and 50 gold sovereigns, as well as 60 per cent of the total purse of $1 million.

On Sunday morning, the Queen and Prince Philip attended a church service in Toronto as royal watchers gathered outside in the sweltering heat and humidity.

About 1,500 people waited as the couple entered St. James Cathedral in downtown on their second-last full day of a nine-day visit to Canada.

The Queen wore a blue patterned outfit with a matching turquoise hat. Those invited inside donned their Sunday best and fancy hats, and several men were decked out in military regalia.

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, his wife and Lt.-Gov. David Onley sat across the aisle from the Queen.

The royal tour continued amid a heat alert in Toronto. Temperatures in the low 30s were expected to feel like the high 30s - maybe even 40 C - when the humidity was factored in.

The crowd applauded as the Queen did a short walkabout after the church service and was presented with bouquets of flowers.

First in line for the Queen's greetings was eight-year-old Dharby Harrison.

"It was awesome," Dharby told CBC News. "She said, 'Thank you' and I said, 'No, thank you, Your Majesty."

So far, the royal couple have visited Halifax, Ottawa and Winnipeg on their Canadian tour.

On Monday, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will visit the headquarters of Research In Motion Ltd., maker of the BlackBerry device, in Waterloo, Ont. They will return to Toronto before leaving for New York City on Tuesday.

Queen Elizabeth, left, and the Duke of Edinburgh, centre, are accompanied by Reverend Douglas Stoute as they arrive for a church service at the Cathedral Church of St. James in Toronto Sunday, July 4, 2010.THE CANADIAN PRESS/Darren Calabrese

Sun Jul 4, 1:26 PM : By Allison Jones, The Canadian Press: TORONTO - A carefully co-ordinated visit by the Queen to a morning church service Sunday was thrown for a bit of a loop when a woman broke free of the waiting crowd and marched right up to the Queen.

The Queen, who moments earlier had stepped blinking into the bright sun after the morning worship at St. James Cathedral, took the unplanned meeting in stride, smiling and chatting with the woman.

Security appeared reluctant to physically stop the older woman from ambling up to the Queen and she gave the monarch something in a black, plastic bag.

The woman was one of hundreds of people who had been waiting outside the church since the early morning to catch a glimpse of the Queen, nearing the end of her 22nd Canadian tour.

About 700 more people who scored first-come, first-serve tickets packed the sweltering church to attend mass with the Queen and Prince Philip. The worshippers included many women wearing fancy, wide-brimmed hats.

The Queen, wearing a blue and white outfit with cream heels and a cream purse, white gloves and a turquoise hat, and the Duke of Edinburgh, entered the sweltering church as "God Save the Queen" was played, followed by "O Canada."

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and his wife, Progressive Conservative provincial politician Christine Elliott were among the other dignitaries who also attended the service. A very excited looking Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty sat with his wife and Lt.-Gov. David Onley across the aisle from the royal couple.

The Queen presented a set of eight silver hand bells engraved "The Silver Chain of Friendship 1710-2010" to representatives from two Royal Chapels of the Mohawks located on two First Nations territories in Ontario.

She also rededicated St. George's Chapel, a section of the cathedral named in 1935 for the silver jubilee of King George V's accession to the throne.

While more stoic throughout the ringing of the hand bells, after unveiling the plaque in St. George's Chapel she turned to the cameras and beamed, looking very pleased.

As the Queen and Prince Philip left the downtown church the waiting crowd erupted in applause and cheers of "We love you, Queen Elizabeth."

She was given bouquets of flowers by several people and even stopped to chat with a few.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will continue their day in Toronto with an afternoon at the racetrack.

A keen owner and breeder of horses, the Queen is to attend the Queen's Plate this afternoon at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.

It won't be the first time the well-known enthusiast of horse racing will attend the oldest continuously run stakes in North America — Elizabeth was at the Queen's Plate in 1959, 1973 and 1997.

And this year, at the race's 151st annual running, she will make the presentation to the winning owner and jockey.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will watch the eighth race, spend some time in the walking ring, then watch the running of the Queen's Plate, with Elizabeth herself making the winning presentations.

The Queen's Plate was first run on June 27, 1860 after Queen Victoria granted a plate valued at 50 guineas. Today race winners get a gold cup and 50 gold sovereigns, as well as 60 per cent of the total $1-million purse.

So far the royal couple has also visited Halifax, Ottawa and Winnipeg on their nine-day Canadian tour.

We are excited to announce that we will have a brief reading by the Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara, California, David Starkey, to kick off the 13th of July evening! Tree reading Series

David will be in Ottawa in support of his new book, A Few Things You Should Know about the Weasel, soon out from Biblioasis. We’re very fortunate to have David join us. Come and find out what at least one poet south of the border is up to!

David Starkey is the Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara and Director of the Creative Writing Program at Santa Barbara City College. Among his poetry collections are Starkey's Book of States (Boson Books, 2007), Adventures of the Minor Poet (Artamo Press, 2007), Ways of Being Dead: New and Selected Poems (Artamo, 2006), David Starkey's Greatest Hits (Pudding House, 2002) and Fear of Everything, winner of Palanquin Press's Spring 2000 chapbook contest. His most recent full-length collection of poetry is A Few Things You Should Know about the Weasel (Biblioasis, 2010). He has also written two textbooks: Creative Writing: Four Genres in Brief (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2008) and Poetry Writing: Theme and Variations (McGraw-Hill, 1999).

David has given us two poems:

Annunciation

Lately, angels have been appearing

in her bedchamber with alarming

frequency. She'll be chilling, surfing

the Web-minding her own business,

basically-when, suddenly, a little trill

of harp music: a visitor from Outer Space.

Sometimes their bodies are nothing more

than shafts of pulsing light, other times

they arrive accompanied by puckish

cherubs, adorned in robes of elaborate

brocade, full-on halos, their wingspans

wider than any goose she's ever seen.

Problem is, they don't say anything.

She's like, Okay? but they only hover there

above her iPod dock, as if whatever message

they've brought she's supposed to understand

already. She doesn't. Try talking to them

and they just smile, get all beatific.

Most people don't believe her, so she keeps

a box of stuff they've left behind. Feathers,

of course, lots of them, but also lilies that stink

if she doesn't toss them out. And then

these notes written in some crazy language

on thick paper that smells vaguely of cows.

Last night, a new angel came-bigger,

brighter, fierce. He brooded over her

for half an hour. Once she even thought

he'd slap her with those delicate hands they have.

She has a feeling this one will be back, soon,

with a question. And she'd better answer Yes.

The Murder Suspect, Moments Before He Is Confronted by Police

He sits in the driver's seat of a borrowed

Corolla, Red Sox cap tilted low over

his anguished face. Across the street, two cops

huddle together, whispering, gesturing

once in his direction-yet he can't find

the will to turn the key and pull away.

In the passenger seat, a Styrofoam

container of half-eaten beef chow mein,

cold rice stuck to the tines of a plastic fork.

The backseat is piled high with clothes.

In the glovebox, a loaded .38

snubby and half a box of cartridges.

He cracks the window to better hear the swish

of willow branches in the November wind.

There's a gingery taste on his mustache,

and he wipes it with his sleeve as a blast

of heavy metal erupts from a pickup

rumbling down the street. His fingertips

tingle-probably with cold, possibly

from something else. There's a needling twinge

above his heart, a flash of memory:

purple blouse, a braid of golden hair, a splash

of crimson on gray tile. The cops begin

to saunter over. Then, as he reaches

down, fumbling for his pistol, they run

toward him, guns drawn, shouting out his name.

Tree is offering a series of one-hour poetry workshops that are co-ordinated by Pearl Pirie, an accomplished local poet and experienced workshop facilitator. The workshops are free to anyone who wishes to attend.

They are held in the usual Tree venue between 6:45 and 7:45 on regular Tree evenings. Each series of four workshops will be led by a different facilitator.

Pearl’s objective is to have the workshops will develop organically. They are to be a time and space for people to talk about poetic practice, why poetry works and how to present ideas. It is a time to share inspiration and get safe group feedback. Each facilitator will act as a unique catalyst, each facilitator bringing a special angle on craft and practice in poetry to the round table. The facilitator brings a selected focus to each session.

Pre-Tree Workshops: On the 13th & 27th of July, Guy Simser: tanka poetics, its ancient Japanese origins and its more recent Japanese and N.A. development. Included with this would be the reading of selected examples. More information on the workshops.

One of the most motivating reasons to retire overseas is the cost of living. Living in another country can cost considerably less.

[See America's Best Affordable Places to Retire.]

Almost anywhere in the world your monthly expenses are largely what you make them. Individuals can decide, for example, whether to rent or own a home. If you don't buy a house you don't have the accompanying carrying costs to worry about, such as repairs, maintenance, and homeowner's insurance. You can also decide whether to purchase a car or not. Going without a vehicle means you don't have to pay to fix it when it breaks down, fuel it, or insure it.

Consumers make choices about whether to run air conditioning 24 hours a day or only in your bedroom at night. And you decide whether to shop for groceries at the American-style grocery store or the local farmer's market. Individuals choose whether to hire help around the house and where and how often you dine out.

Another fundamental choice retirees abroad must make is how local to go. If you're willing to purchase local goods your budget can be seriously controlled. Going native doesn't mean living uncomfortably. Your lifestyle, in fact, could be enhanced and improved in many ways. Retiring overseas is all about embracing the new and the different.

[See 5 Places to Retire On Social Security Alone.]

Just how affordable could your new local life overseas be? As little as $850 a month or less. Cuenca, Ecuador is one of the world's most affordable places to live well. Here's how your Cuenca retirement budget could look:

--Rent: $200

--Utilities and Internet: $120

--Groceries: $240

--Transportation: $40

--Health Insurance: $50

--Entertainment: $200

Think of this as a starter budget. For a total of $850 a month, including a comfortable entertainment allowance, you could live a comfortable and interesting life in a part of the world that boasts spring-like weather year-round.

Build your budget out from there. You can rent an apartment in Cuenca for as little as $200 a month. But if you want a bigger or more modern place to live you could spend two or three times as much. If you want full-time help around the house, it will probably cost about $200 a month. If you want to keep a car, add another $150 a month or so for the associated costs. Do you like to eat out three or four nights a week? Cuenca boasts many good and international-standard restaurants.

This beautiful colonial city with a thriving theater and arts community is not the cheapest place to live in Ecuador. You could live on less in other parts of the country. But Cuenca is the cheapest place to live well, not only in Ecuador, but anywhere in the world.

[See 7 Affordable Places to Retire Abroad.]

With just over 400,000 people, Cuenca is small enough so that you always see someone you know when walking around town. Yet it's not so remote that you can't find the services you need. The colonial architecture, Andean markets, and heritage of the city make you really feel like you're really experiencing another country with a rich culture that provides loads of different ways to spend your time. Public transportation is great, both within the city and between cities. Retirees won't need to invest in a car if they don't want to. The expatriate community is large enough so that you can find English-speaking company when you want it.

Cuenca is perhaps the top choice in the world right now for living well in retirement on a super-modest budget. Other affordable places to retire abroad include Leon, Nicaragua, Las Tablas, Panama, and Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Queen arrives in Winnipeg

Queen arrives in Winnipeg

CBC.ca, Updated: July 3, 2010 2:35 PM: A plane carrying the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh touched down Saturday in Winnipeg as the royal couple began a busy, six-hour visit to the city.

A thunderstorm swept through Winnipeg earlier in the day, but the storm passed before the Queen and her husband arrived to attend a series of events, including the dedication of a special cornerstone for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

The couple became the first official passengers to the city's new airport terminal as they landed at the James Armstrong Richardson International Airport around 12:20 p.m. CT. The Queen then signed a letter addressed to the province's youth. The letter was placed in a time capsule, which will not be opened until 2060.

After a brief ceremony at the airport, the Queen, 84, was taken to Government House for a luncheon. While there, she will rededicate a statue of herself created by the late Leo Mol, a world-renowned Manitoba artist.

The Queen will then present the Canadian Museum for Human Rights with its cornerstone, taken from the fields of Runnymede near Windsor Castle, where the original Magna Carta, also called the Great Charter of Liberty, was signed about 800 years ago.

On Friday, Premier Greg Selinger unveiled a copy of the Magna Carta at the Manitoba legislature. It was produced in 1217, two years after the legal charter recognizing certain rights was drafted. The document, considered the bedrock of today's modern democracies, will be on public display for three months, starting July 12.

As the day winds down, Her Majesty will give one of only four speeches she plans to deliver during her nine-day summer tour of Canada, to kick off a concert dedicated to human rights.

The concert will include performances from Manitoba-born singer Chantal Kreviazuk, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and aboriginal drummers.

This is the Queen's 22nd visit to Canada. The royal couple, who have made stops in Halifax and Ottawa, will visit Waterloo, Ont., and Toronto before their tour ends July 6.

She will also deliver a stone from Runnymeade to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights before attending a concert in her honour

Last Updated: Friday, July 2, 2010 /10:12 PM CST : The Canadian Press. The Queen's visit to Winnipeg Saturday is expected to be warmer and less eventful than her last in 2002, when her water taxi broke down on the Red River.

"I have people on a weekly basis come down to my boats and ask which boat the Queen got stranded in," says Gordon Cartwright, owner of the Splash Dash water-taxi service.

A warm fall turned cold that day in October 2002 when the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh boarded one of Cartwright's boats for what was to be a short trip across the Red to St. Boniface, the old French-speaking quarter of Winnipeg.

The boat broke down mid-river and had to be towed by another boat carrying her security detail.

The Queen was not in danger, but British newspapers had a royal field day about the indignity, as well as the failure to provide "rugs" to keep her Majesty's lap warm in the chilly weather.

"That was interesting," said the Queen, as she was helped from one boat into the other to reach shore.

Incident remembered

Even Manitoba protocol chief Dwight MacAulay couldn't resist when asked why this year's early estimate of $42,000 for Manitoba's share of the visit's costs was so much less than 2002, when a longer visit hit around $500,000.

"As you've probably seen in the notes, we're not doing any water-taxi bills," he said.

Even if the Queen were eager for a repeat, the water level on the Red River isn't co-operating this year, with most docks submerged after weeks of heavy rains.

Instead, officials are keeping her Majesty on dry land.

She will be the first passenger to land at the new $585-million Richardson International Airport.

Royal cornerstone to be delivered

She will then re-dedicate a 1970 statue of herself by Winnipeg sculptor Leo Mol that's being relocated to the grounds of Government House. She will also deliver a stone from Runnymeade to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights before attending a concert in her honour.

Runnymeade, near the Queen's home at Windsor Castle, was the site where the Magna Carta was signed in 1215.

The Great Charter, as it is known in English, is part of the foundation of constitutional law in the English-speaking world and the royal rock will become a cornerstone of the new national museum, scheduled for completion in 2012.

"We know the importance of the Magna Carta and what that means to human rights," said Stuart Murray, chief executive officer of the new museum and a former leader of the Manitoba Progressive Conservative Party.

Murray said the Queen's visit is fitting for the first-of-its-kind museum.

"We are the first museum in the world to deal with the broad issue of human rights. It makes sense that her Majesty will be with us on this day."

July 2, 2010 By CBC News: First, let me establish some bona fides. I get it. I understand the affinity the vast majority of gun owners have for their guns.

Growing up as I did in rural Manitoba, I was 10 years old when I bought my first rifle, a .22-calibre Cooey bolt-action repeater for $10.

With my friends, who also had .22s, we spent many summer days hunting rabbits and gophers. Gophers in particular.

At the time, the province paid a nickel bounty for every gopher's tail you brought in. Designed to curb Manitoba's burgeoning gopher population, the policy was a distinct failure, although my friends and I did what we could to wipe them out.

We all used .22 Whiz-Bang long rifle ammunition. It came 50 shells to a box. A box cost 85 cents.

Simple arithmetic meant you had to have 17 hits to buy a new box of Whiz-Bangs. You can develop a pretty good shooting eye working to that standard.

Growing-up moment

Hunter McConathy, 7, holds a hunting rifle with a short stock as his father Bryan and salesman Russ Duncan watch him at the Cabela's store in Fort Worth, Texas in 2008. In June 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Chicago's strict gun control law, in the process affirming the right of individual Americans to own arms. (Jessica Rinaldi/Reuters)

In the fall, we went duck and deer hunting with our fathers and other older men.

To be invited to shoot over decoys or to be assigned a deer stand was a big growing-up moment.

In that part of the world, guns were mixed in with the baseball season, fall football, bicycles, paper routes and hanging around. Guns were a part of the scene but by no means the dominant activity.

When I left Manitoba to work elsewhere, almost always in urban areas, guns and hunting simply faded from my life. I've never owned one since.

My wife and I live in Washington but we also have a small farm in northern Virginia. Fauquier County to be exact. It's about 80 kilometres from the capital. Fauquier is very much about hunting and the outdoor life.

Most of my neighbours hunt, many belong to skeet, trap or pistol clubs and, as was the case in Manitoba, guns are part of a family tradition with one notable difference: women are now fully active in these sports. Many young girls follow the same path as their brothers.

Semitic illegal drug calls Khat spreads in North

Guns on the bar

Many are also National Rifle Association members. And while I don't shoot anymore, my neighbours and I have common cause.

It is that the lunatic-fringe gun owners, and the weak-kneed politicians who serve them, have now gone too far.

In Virginia, you can carry a concealed weapon. You need a permit that requires some minimal knowledge of your weapon and a check of your background.

I remember a few years back, when the law came into effect, the local newspaper interviewed the first Fauquier County recipient of such a permit. They also ran a picture of the man, a beefy, crew-cut young guy who said he was a construction worker.

Asked why he wanted to carry a gun, his response was simple and straightforward: " It makes me feel good."

More than 100,000 such permits have been issued since.

These permits have always had no-go areas. You can't carry a concealed weapon in schools, hospitals, at the mall, etc. But this week, the state legislature passed a law that allows gun-toters to wear their iron in bars and restaurants where liquor is sold.

This law passed despite being opposed by every police chief in the state.

The majority of restaurant and bar owners opposed it as well.

The new law says a permit-holder cannot drink alcohol while packing a gun. But bar owners say, if a gun is concealed, how would they know who may be breaking the law.

One of those in the forefront of the law's successful lobbying effort is Philip Van Cleave of Virginia's Citizens Defence League.

He told reporters he wanted the law because: "If there is somebody drinking in there and suddenly they pull a knife and start to stab people or whatever, I want to protect myself."

There was another, perhaps more significant defeat this week for the gun-control movement: The U.S. Supreme Court strike down the city of Chicago's strict gun rules.

In a shot heard nationwide, the court ruled that "states and local jurisdictions cannot significantly limit the right to keep and to bear arms," a direct response to Chicago's 28-year ban on handguns being kept in the city's homes.

'Commonsense regulations'

The news triggered a barrage of headlines and dire warnings. Many commentators, such as CNN/New Yorker legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin, felt that gun control had just been thrown out the window and someone was soon going to have to figure out how to stop someone from legally owning a Stinger missile.

Silly, I know, but this is the U.S.

Almost overlooked, the justice did add language that indicated states and local jurisdictions could enforce "commonsense regulations."

In the wake of the ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley promised to soon push for a new ordinance regulating handguns in the city. (M. Spencer Green/Associated Press)

That was enough for Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. His council immediately passed a new law, even tougher than the previous one.

Its teeth is that it makes gun permits very difficult to get. The procedure is time-consuming and the mayor promises that if any loopholes are found he will plug them

.

This newest step by Chicago will almost certainly end up in the courts as well.

Pretty much everyone, on both sides of the gun issue, believes the court's inclusion of "commonsense regulations" will open the door to hundreds, if not thousands of lawsuits testing the limits of gun control right across the land.

Obviously, you don't want guns in schools. But with the right to own guns by individuals now firmly established, where do you draw the line?

The vast majority of the gun owners that I know understand what is right. It's time for politicians to get with it and not just play to the loudest voices.

Some quick statistics.

Every year more than 100,000 Americans are shot and more than 30,000 will die as a result of their wounds.

Eighty-five people in the U.S. die each day from gun violence, nine of them are teenagers or children.

And a note to Philip Van Cleave and his concern about being stabbed in a bar: Gun owners are four times more likely to die from guns than those without weapons.

About 11 per cent were Palestinian children studied were anemic. Here students line up on the first day of elementary school reopening in the Rafah refugee camp southern Gaza Strip in January 2009. (Eyad Baba/Associated Press)

About one in four Palestinian children goes without breakfast, say researchers who found many had stunted growth or malnourished.

July 2, 2010: About one in four Palestinian children goes without breakfast, say researchers who found many had stunted growth or malnourished.

Medical journal the Lancet published a series of abstracts and commentaries Friday on health issues in the Palestinian territories.

In one study, Kholoud Nasser from the Ministry of Education in Ramallah, looked at the diet of 2,000 Palestinians aged nine to 11 and 14 to 16 in the West Bank and Gaza in March 2008.

Weight and height were measured, and hemoglobin concentrations were measured to assess the degree of iron-deficiency anemia. Children were interviewed about their knowledge, attitudes and practices, and the teens filled in questionnaires.

The results suggested 26 per cent of children did not eat breakfast, the main indicator of healthy eating habits.

About 11 per cent were anemic, and one in 17 stunted or low in height for age the Lancet reported

The higher prevalence of anemia in girls (14 per cent) than boys (7 per cent) could be associated with menstruation that is not compensated for by diet, the study's authors suggested.

More boys were stunted (eight per cent in boys compared with three per cent of girls), either because of late onset of puberty or poor health since early childhood, the researchers said.

Of the 1,883 children, two per cent were underweight and 15 per cent overweight or obese.

"Comprehensive and effective school nutrition programs that are targeted at all age groups, with special attention to adolescents and girls, are needed because the data for overweight and iron-deficiency anemia are alarming," they concluded.

'Nights were like nightmares'

A paper on women in labour and midwives included personal accounts of childbirth experiences during the 23 days of Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip in December 2008 and January 2009. One researcher interviewed the women in Arabic, and the quotes were transcribed and translated for the paper.

One woman was quoted as saying: "I was not thinking like other people in face of death or shelling, but was only thinking of my case. What would happen if I had labour pains at night? How will I manage? They were shelling even ambulances. Nights were like nightmares. Each morning, I breathed a sigh of relief that daylight had appeared."

Two weeks ago, Israel pledged it would allow all goods in Gaza, except weapons and items considered to have a military use, after deciding to ease the three-year blockade it imposed after Hamas won a Palestinian election in 2006 and took control of the territory.

The rest of the journal's series looks at maternal health, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer, health and human security, and the future of the health-care system in the Palestinian territories.

Queen Elizabeth shakes hands with Canadian House of Commons Opposition Leader Michael Ignatieff at Rideau Hall the official residence of the Governor General, in Ottawa, Friday July 2, 2010. THE CANADIAN PRESS /Fred Chartrand/

By The Canadian Press: OTTAWA - Hoping for insights from one of the world's most adept public figures, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff met privately with the Queen on Friday as the royal couple took a break from their hectic visit to Canada.

The Queen requested the meeting. And although Ignatieff wasn't sure why she asked, the leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition said he jumped at the chance.

"You're looking at the most experienced political figure in the world," Ignatieff said shortly after his audience.

"Any time you get a chance to meet the Queen, you say 'yes' right away."

The Queen arrived first, in the large drawing room at Rideau Hall, wearing a light purple flowered dress.

She casually remarked she had noticed the night before that "the ground hogs were busy" in the gardens around the Governor General's residence.

Ignatieff then arrived, thanking her for seeing him on her day off.

"I was very touched by that and appreciate it very much," he said as the two sat down to their private meeting.

Ignatieff later said "she's an absolute joy to meet" and that she "has a wonderful sense of the absurd."

"You have to in her job, because she sees a lot of amusing things happen. What is astounding about her is how … that sense of the comedy of life has survived 60 years of gruelling public service."

The Queen and Prince Philip were to depart Ottawa on Saturday for a whirlwind trip to Winnipeg before flying to Toronto to take in the Queen’s Plate.

One of the highlights of the visit came Thursday as the Queen addressed a crowd estimated at 100,000 during Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill.

With discontent brewing over his leadership, Ignatieff used the Friday meeting to garner any insight from a long-serving public figure.

Ignatieff's personal leadership poll numbers recently have been well below those of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and NDP Leader Jack Layton. Some Liberal MPs have also openly criticized the way Ignatieff has been doing his job, and how the party has dealt with controversial issues.

Ignatieff has a full summer travel schedule that will see him in China and on a bus tour across every Canadian province and territory.

The Opposition leader acknowledged Friday he has had difficulty resonating with voters — his party languishes below the Conservatives in the polls — but insisted he can improve Liberal prospects in time for an election.

"Every time I sit down with Canadians and talk to Canadians and I'm with Canadians, it seems to work," he said.

"I have to earn this, vote by vote, press scrum by press scrum, interview by interview."

During his six-day trip to China, Ignatieff will meet government and Communist Party officials in Beijing before travelling to Shanghai, where he'll deliver a speech at the China Institute of International Studies.

Ignatieff is hoping to underscore the different tactics his party would use, compared with the Conservatives, to enhance trade links with China while raising human-rights issues.

"I don't go to China thinking Canada's perfect. There are things on our (human rights) conscience as well, so I'm willing to have a very frank dialogue with the Chinese," he said.

"But I'm not going to start, you know, finger pointing."

July 1, 2010 : Queen Elizabeth told 100,000 people on Parliament Hill on Thursday that she could think of no better reason to celebrate than Canada's 143rd birthday.

The Queen was spending her first Canada Day in Ottawa since 1997.

At 84, the Queen said she has witnessed more than half of Canada's national history and praised what Canada stands for.

"This nation has dedicated itself to being a caring home for its own, a sanctuary for others and an example to the world," she said.

The monarch earned a roar of applause when she mentioned a Canadian moment of pride - the gold medal win for Canada's men's Olympic hockey team. The Queen also praised the commitment of the Canadian Forces, and said Canada has reason for optimism, even in trying times.

An estimated 100,000 party-goers packed Parliament Hill, compared with 35,000 last year.

Many of the thousands arrived before dawn to ensure a front-row seat to see, and perhaps meet, the Queen during her walkabout scheduled for later in the day.

The Queen spent Wednesday night at her official residence in Canada, Rideau Hall, and then sat for an official portrait on Thursday morning.

With her personal Canadian flag flying from the Peace Tower, the Queen was honoured with a flypast by CF-18 jetfighters and another by the aerobatic Snowbirds, as well as a march-past by the Guard of Honour.

The Queen was serenaded by Canadian artists including Quebec pop star Isabelle Boulay, bagpipers the Campbell Brothers, the Barenaked Ladies and the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir.

She was also lauded by a host of luminaries, including Prime Minister Stephen Harper, actor Christopher Plummer and figure skater Joannie Rochette, who received a warm round of applause from the spectators, many decked out in red and white.

"Thank you for being there for me in my times of joy and sadness," said Rochette, who skated to a bronze medal in the Vancouver Olympics, just days after the sudden death of her mother.

"I had the sense that all of Canada was cheering us on," she said in French.

Canada Day celebrated abroad

In England, thousands of people flocked to Trafalgar Square in London for Canada Day.

"Every year we have had 30,000 to 50,000 people that come to the square over the course of the day," said Canadian High Commissioner James Wright. "It's a showcase of what's best about Canada."

The festivities opened with a performance by the Canadian Tenors and included street hockey competitions. Visitors got to meet Mounties and see a totem pole being carved.

Canadian wine, beer and Tim Hortons coffee were all on tap. Canadian music played all day, and the festivities will culminate in a huge concert in the evening. Visitors could also enjoy bison burgers.

Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean celebrated Canada Day far from home.

Jean was at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China, where she made a speech, led a maple leaf flag-raising ceremony and enjoyed some beef from home at the Canadian pavilion.

Canadian troops in Afghanistan celebrated the nation's birthday by munching on hamburgers and hotdogs. Many wore red and white and listened to Bryan Adams tunes.

July 2, 2010 By CBC News: Rescuers used canoes and front-end loaders following heavy rain and widespread street flooding Thursday night in Yorkton, Sask.

About 100 families were forced from their homes when water poured into their basements. More left their houses Friday morning and sought shelter.

Mayor James Wilson said a state of local emergency has been declared, adding that there has never been flooding to this extent before in the city of 15,000 people about 190 kilometres northeast of Regina.

The storm sewer system was overwhelmed and many streets were under water, including sections of Broadway Street in the heart of the city. Power was turned off in sections of Yorkton.

CBC Saskatchewan weather consultant Wayne Miskolczi said that according to Environment Canada 64 millimetres fell before midnight, and further heavy rain was recorded early Friday.

"I'm sure there are spots in Yorkton that have had well over 100 millimetres," he said.

Wilson said he's been told that some areas received 100 to 150 millimetres of rain in half an hour. An estimated 60 to 70 per cent of homes took in water, he said, and many businesses were flooded.

Yorkton has had floods before, but not like this, Wilson said. "Nothing to this extent." He said some people had to be carried away in front-end loaders.

The mayor added that Premier Brad Wall called him and assured him there will be quick provincial relief for people in need.

An emergency evacuation centre was set up at the Gallagher Centre, the city's main recreational centre and fairground. People making their way there were told to stick to higher routes. Some flooded-out residents were seeking refuge in hotels as far away as Regina.

"They were evacuating people in canoes," said Michael Paslofski, a spokesman with the Canadian Red Cross in Yorkton. "If this rain comes again, we're going to be in big trouble."

A CBC reporter said one couple paddled a canoe to their home Friday morning to pick up some clothing.

Additional room at the evacuation centre has been set aside in anticipation that there may be more problems later Friday. More thunderstorms were in the forecast.

Record-setting amounts of rain have been dumped on Saskatchewan in recent weeks. In Saskatoon, city council passed an emergency resolution Friday morning asking the province for disaster relief following flooding earlier in the week.

The town of Maple Creek in the southwest part of the province declared itself a disaster zone last month after more than 100 millimetres of rain fell in 48 hours.

Taliban attack U.S. aid compound

July 2, 2010 By CBC News: Six suicide bombers storm a U.S. aid compound in northern Afghanistan before dawn, killing at least four people and wounding several others, officials say.

A group of suicide bombers attacked a U.S. aid compound in northern Afghanistan early Friday, killing at least four people and wounding several others, officials said.

As many as three of the dead are believed to be foreigners, the New York Times reported.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the pre-dawn raid on the housing compound in Kunduz.

A lone suicide bomber blew a hole in the wall around the compound used by Development Alternatives Inc., a Washington, D.C.-based global consulting company on contract with the United States Agency for International Aid (USAID). The company is working on governance and community development in the area.

At least five other attackers then ran inside the building, killing or wounding security guards and others before dying in a gun battle with Afghan security forces who raced to the scene.

"This complex commando-style raid sparked a six-hour firefight," journalist Tom Popyk said from Afghanistan. "Security forces inside battled the bombers as coalition forces outside treated civilian casualties and then counter-attacked."

The bodies of the victims were found inside amid rubble, pools of blood and broken glass. Stunned aid workers were led from the scene as NATO troops carried bodies wrapped in black plastic out on stretchers.

"This attack shows the insurgents' desire to prevent progress, and draws attention to their true goal of serving themselves rather than the people of Afghanistan," said navy Capt. Jane Campbell, a spokesman for the NATO mission, referring to the Kunduz attack.

No international troops were wounded in the attack, Campbell said.

German killed: report

Gen. Abdul Razaq Yaqoubi, police chief in Kunduz province, said those killed included an Afghan policeman, an Afghan man who worked as a security guard at the house and two foreigners. The German Foreign Ministry told The Associated Press in Berlin that a German citizen was killed in the attack.

"It was 3 o'clock in the morning, close to the morning prayer time, when a suicide bomber in a 4x4 vehicle exploded his vehicle," Yaqoubi said as Afghan national security forces were battling to kill the last surviving attacker. "There is no way for him to escape."

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told The Associated Press in Kabul that six suicide bombers attacked a "training centre" for Afghan security forces in Kunduz and killed 55 foreigners. The Taliban often exaggerate their claims, and the numbers they provided could not be verified.

The attack appeared to be part of a Taliban campaign against development projects at a time when the U.S. and its allies are trying to bolster civilian programs to shore up the Afghan government. On Wednesday, militants fired rockets at a base for South Korean construction workers in Parwan province but caused no casualties.

In April, a gunman killed an 18-year-old woman working for Development Alternatives as she left her job in the southern city of Kandahar. Police believed the killing was part of a Taliban campaign against Afghans working for foreign development organizations.

Also Wednesday, the Taliban attacked an airfield outside Jalalabad. In late May, insurgents launched an attack on Kandahar Airfield.

Suicide bombers and insurgents also attacked the giant U.S.-run Bagram Airfield north of Kabul in May, leading to a deadly clash that left several insurgents dead.

Niger has food emergency: UN

Last Updated: Friday, July 2, 2010 /10:00 AM ET : The Associated Press

The World Food Program has declared its work in Niger an "emergency operation" after a survey found a sharp rise in malnutrition rates among young children.

WFP spokeswoman Emilia Casella said 16.7 per cent of children under five years of age suffer from acute malnutrition in the African country. Children under three are particularly affected.

She said that last year the malnutrition rate was 12.3 per cent. The threshold for declaring an emergency is 15 per cent.

Casella told reporters in Geneva on Friday that the WFP plans to boost its child feeding program from 500,000 to 640,000. It will also double food aid in Niger to reach 4.7 million people this year.

Food shortages in Niger have worsened following bad harvests over the past year.

The International Integrated Security Systems in Canada and the World are in dilemma due to the masks and dishonest works of the spies of Middle East , former Eastern European Countries and the third world. They aim to cover their crimes , crimes of their leaders and organizations. They use the family names of the Prophet Mohammed , the trinities and holy spirits to hide their illegal activities. Down town Ottawa is full of places for their dishonest actions e.g. James Pub at Bank Street, Atomic Rooster Dom Polski, Jack Purcell Community Centre, Arts Cenre, Spark and Bank Streets, the Lord Elgin Hotel, and Fairmont Chateau Laurier Hotel.

They are supported by the pro-terrorist and criminal countries such as Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Poland, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, Libya, Yemen, Israell, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, former Eastern European countries, Sudan, Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Palestinian State (s), Turkey, Islamic Republic of Iran, France, Morocco, Nigeria and South America, Algeria, South America and Mexico, Nigeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Eritrea and Ethiopia. The Polish Churches for instance, Roman Catholic and Islamic Centers work in corporations to progress another religions in their illegal and illusionary behaviors .The exploit the gaps in Irish communities centers, organizations and diplomatic lines. Monarch displays royal touch

OTTAWA — After unveiling the statue of jazz legend Oscar Peterson with a pull on a golden rope, Her Majesty, the Queen walked over to where Peterson’s widow, Kelly, and daughter, Celine, were standing.

The Queen shook hands with them and spoke of how much she’d enjoyed meeting Peterson himself and hearing him play when he performed for her and the Duke of Edinburgh at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall during a 2002 concert celebrating her Golden Jubilee. She even asked whether they liked the statue.

“She spoke about what an honour it was for Oscar,” Kelly Peterson said later, “and how pleased she was to be here to unveil the statue and asked if we were happy with the likeness.”

It was one of numerous brief exchanges in which the 84-year-old monarch engaged Wednesday during the first day of her four-day visit to Ottawa, but such moments, perhaps more than anything else, display the grace with which the Queen fulfils her royal duties.

Thousands of people, young and old, retirees and office workers, packed sidewalks around the National Arts Centre to witness the unveiling. The crowd gasped as the velvet curtain rose to reveal artist Ruth Abernethy’s larger-than-life sculpture. The Queen seemed impressed.

“When she saw it, particularly when she went around it, she was very taken by it,” NAC president Peter Herrndorff said. “When she looked at the sculpture, she said, ‘That’s really interesting, it’s really Oscar.’”

Her Majesty, wearing a power-blue coat and hat, pearl earrings and necklace, showed the same attention to others. She spoke to 10-year-old Ty Weber, who, along with others, handed the Queen a bouquet of flowers (which were artfully handed to a nearby assistant). The youngster couldn’t remember what the Queen said to him.

Her presence seems to have that effect. “She looks you right in the eye. I didn’t know what to do,” said Norma Booth, 82, who waited in the crowd for three hours to shake Her Majesty’s hand. “She put her hand up and I thought, ‘Do I or don’t I?’ Then I thought, ‘Nothing to lose.’ I can’t believe it.”

Earlier, after arriving at the Ottawa airport from Halifax, the Queen and Prince Philip were greeted by Madison Trudeau, the 10-year-old niece of Transport Minister John Baird, who presented the Queen with a bouquet of pink and orange roses, officially welcoming the royal couple to the city.

After running the gauntlet of waiting politicians, the Queen and Prince Philip left in a motorcade for a visit to the newly renovated Museum of Nature. They were greeted by a collective cheer from the crowd of about 500 that had gathered outside.

Inside, the Queen toured the new Water Gallery, unveiled a plaque and met with museum volunteers. She also went on a brief walkabout during the 40-minute stop, accepting flowers and greetings.

One well-wisher was Amy Levengood, who had driven to Ottawa from Douglassville, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. “The Queen has been my hero since I was about 11- years old,” the 40-year-old said. “She is such a constant person in an ever-changing world. Her dedication is unmatched by so many public figures today. She has kept her integrity.”

The sentiment was shared by others. Ann McJamet, accompanied by her daughter and three grandchildren, was taking part in her seventh royal visit, the first occurring in 1939, when McJamet was only two and the Queen was a 13-year-old princess.

“I usually cheer her on when she’s in town,” said McJamet, who held a weathered Union Jack flag in one hand. “I was brought up to revere the Queen and remain loyal to the Crown.”

Nearby, 24-year-old Sarah Russell wore the same lapel pin her grandparents kept from the Queen’s 1953 coronation tour of Canada. “I think it’s important to remember the roots of the country: where it started and where we come from,” she said. “And I think the Queen’s an impressive lady.”

Queen to join Canada Day festivities

Last Updated: Thursday, July 1, 2010 | 8:43 AM ET: The Canadian Press . The Queen will bring a touch of class Thursday to Canada's annual birthday bash.

The normally informal, boisterous festivities on Parliament Hill in Ottawa are to kick off at noon with the arrival of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in a horse-drawn landau, complete with a mounted RCMP escort.

Pomp and circumstance will dominate the opening two hours of Canada's 143rd birthday, in honour of the Queen's presence.

The 84-year-old monarch has not been on the Hill for Canada Day since 1997.

With her personal Canadian flag flying from the Peace Tower, the Queen will be honoured with a 21-gun salute, a fly-past by CF-18 jetfighters and another by the aerobatic Snowbirds, as well as a march-past by the Guard of Honour.
