We are excited to announce that we will have a brief reading by the Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara, California, David Starkey, to kick off the 13th of July evening! Tree reading Series

David will be in Ottawa in support of his new book, A Few Things You Should Know about the Weasel, soon out from Biblioasis. We’re very fortunate to have David join us. Come and find out what at least one poet south of the border is up to!

David Starkey is the Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara and Director of the Creative Writing Program at Santa Barbara City College. Among his poetry collections are Starkey's Book of States (Boson Books, 2007), Adventures of the Minor Poet (Artamo Press, 2007), Ways of Being Dead: New and Selected Poems (Artamo, 2006), David Starkey's Greatest Hits (Pudding House, 2002) and Fear of Everything, winner of Palanquin Press's Spring 2000 chapbook contest. His most recent full-length collection of poetry is A Few Things You Should Know about the Weasel (Biblioasis, 2010). He has also written two textbooks: Creative Writing: Four Genres in Brief (Bedford/St. Martin's, 2008) and Poetry Writing: Theme and Variations (McGraw-Hill, 1999).

David has given us two poems:

Annunciation

Lately, angels have been appearing

in her bedchamber with alarming

frequency. She'll be chilling, surfing

the Web-minding her own business,

basically-when, suddenly, a little trill

of harp music: a visitor from Outer Space.

Sometimes their bodies are nothing more

than shafts of pulsing light, other times

they arrive accompanied by puckish

cherubs, adorned in robes of elaborate

brocade, full-on halos, their wingspans

wider than any goose she's ever seen.

Problem is, they don't say anything.

She's like, Okay? but they only hover there

above her iPod dock, as if whatever message

they've brought she's supposed to understand

already. She doesn't. Try talking to them

and they just smile, get all beatific.

Most people don't believe her, so she keeps

a box of stuff they've left behind. Feathers,

of course, lots of them, but also lilies that stink

if she doesn't toss them out. And then

these notes written in some crazy language

on thick paper that smells vaguely of cows.

Last night, a new angel came-bigger,

brighter, fierce. He brooded over her

for half an hour. Once she even thought

he'd slap her with those delicate hands they have.

She has a feeling this one will be back, soon,

with a question. And she'd better answer Yes.

The Murder Suspect, Moments Before He Is Confronted by Police

He sits in the driver's seat of a borrowed

Corolla, Red Sox cap tilted low over

his anguished face. Across the street, two cops

huddle together, whispering, gesturing

once in his direction-yet he can't find

the will to turn the key and pull away.

In the passenger seat, a Styrofoam

container of half-eaten beef chow mein,

cold rice stuck to the tines of a plastic fork.

The backseat is piled high with clothes.

In the glovebox, a loaded .38

snubby and half a box of cartridges.

He cracks the window to better hear the swish

of willow branches in the November wind.

There's a gingery taste on his mustache,

and he wipes it with his sleeve as a blast

of heavy metal erupts from a pickup

rumbling down the street. His fingertips

tingle-probably with cold, possibly

from something else. There's a needling twinge

above his heart, a flash of memory:

purple blouse, a braid of golden hair, a splash

of crimson on gray tile. The cops begin

to saunter over. Then, as he reaches

down, fumbling for his pistol, they run

toward him, guns drawn, shouting out his name.

As a poet, fiction writer,

Olive Senior is one of Canada's most internationally recognized and acclaimed authors. Winner of the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for her fiction collection Summer Lightning and a finalist for the Governor General's Literary Award for her poetry collection Over the Roofs of the World, her body of published work includes four books of poetry, three collections of short stories and several award-winning non-fiction works on Caribbean culture. She divides her time between her native Jamaica and her home in Toronto.

Tree is offering a series of one-hour poetry workshops that are co-ordinated by Pearl Pirie, an accomplished local poet and experienced workshop facilitator. The workshops are free to anyone who wishes to attend.

They are held in the usual Tree venue between 6:45 and 7:45 on regular Tree evenings. Each series of four workshops will be led by a different facilitator.

Pearl’s objective is to have the workshops will develop organically. They are to be a time and space for people to talk about poetic practice, why poetry works and how to present ideas. It is a time to share inspiration and get safe group feedback. Each facilitator will act as a unique catalyst, each facilitator bringing a special angle on craft and practice in poetry to the round table. The facilitator brings a selected focus to each session.

Pre-Tree Workshops: On the 13th & 27th of July, Guy Simser: tanka poetics, its ancient Japanese origins and its more recent Japanese and N.A. development. Included with this would be the reading of selected examples. More information on the workshops.

Their Integrated Security Systems work against national and international security systems, and they penetrate to Canadian institutions illegally and build illegally business in order to support the terrorist and criminal organizations in North America and over seas.

They corporate with socialist activists of former Soviets Union in the Embassy of Yemen some of their names are mentioned in the previous reports, and some new names are Abdulkarim the former Yemenite socialist diplomatic activist , Ryiad Akbari, and the groups activist of Dr. Qais Ghanem, the poet , medical doctor and the activist of Green Party as well Mr. Saeed, the Iraqi socialist of MacLaren Street 415, and Mr. Asam Sharifa, the writer and the multi-agent of diplomatic lines. They work with corporations with the Owner of the House religious Establishments as well as others Eastern Religious Establishments, that provide hate and work dishonestly for Canadian governments as well as for the World.

The second group is working with corporation of Islamic , and Socialistic centers and communities like Polish cultural and business organizations and they fight with each other culturally , religiously as well as in illegal transactions . They also fight with groups of Canadian –Jewish Communities business men and some of their places are the UPS Store, Shawarma’s Restaurants, Walckas’ Galleries, and Paradisco Restaurants and Pubs, Communities and Universities as well as business organizations for instance, G.P.C Lab Digital and Custom Photo Finishing at Bank St. ( Spies of Socialistic Groups of Republic Of Poland).

The integrated Security systems build their empire by using names of their leaders and scientists of their former countries as well as their dishonest cultural, religious and business issues to build shadows and authorities that are unrelated to Canadian laws and constitutions and to participate in political, economic and social corruptions.

The spies are using Arabic and former eastern European languages dialects to hide their crimes as well as Islamic and pre-historic radical issues.

Mr. Abdul Rahman and Abood and former workers of Al-Madina’s Grocery store at Bell St, Gladstone and they collaborate with French separatists of Quebec province.

Their spaces are MacLaren St. 415 and Shawarma’s restaurant at Bank street and Rideau Center downtown Ottawa. Some of their name are Suzanne, who lives at MacLaren at Bank street 415, and Mr. Isam, the Lebanese activist and pro-terrorism and illegal transactions.

Additionally, some francophone’s who support terrorism and crimes in Canada and North America. They are supported by diplomatic lines of Yemeni Embassy and its informational Centers in Canada. the Moroccan diplomatic line, the United Arab Emirates diplomatic Corpse and by the former hidden Iraqis regime activists.

They act to hide their illegal transactions and activities from Yemeni Community and Islamic Centers too.

The Tunisian activist of radical and non-radical Islamic groups are working by using the masks of pro CIA from the Barber Salon at Cooper st. and another places.

The fourth groups of terrorism and criminals are represented by former and new regime of Polish Embassy and its integrated security systems, they act from the Churches by using the facilities of Catholic and Non-Catholic Churches and organizations to fight against the United Church with its peaceful ideology and Canadian constitutions and systems. They support the radical Irishisms to damage the security system.

CBC.ca, Updated: July 3, 2010 2:35 PM: A plane carrying the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh touched down Saturday in Winnipeg as the royal couple began a busy, six-hour visit to the city.

A thunderstorm swept through Winnipeg earlier in the day, but the storm passed before the Queen and her husband arrived to attend a series of events, including the dedication of a special cornerstone for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.

The couple became the first official passengers to the city's new airport terminal as they landed at the James Armstrong Richardson International Airport around 12:20 p.m. CT. The Queen then signed a letter addressed to the province's youth. The letter was placed in a time capsule, which will not be opened until 2060.

After a brief ceremony at the airport, the Queen, 84, was taken to Government House for a luncheon. While there, she will rededicate a statue of herself created by the late Leo Mol, a world-renowned Manitoba artist.

The Queen will then present the Canadian Museum for Human Rights with its cornerstone, taken from the fields of Runnymede near Windsor Castle, where the original Magna Carta, also called the Great Charter of Liberty, was signed about 800 years ago.

On Friday, Premier Greg Selinger unveiled a copy of the Magna Carta at the Manitoba legislature. It was produced in 1217, two years after the legal charter recognizing certain rights was drafted. The document, considered the bedrock of today's modern democracies, will be on public display for three months, starting July 12.

As the day winds down, Her Majesty will give one of only four speeches she plans to deliver during her nine-day summer tour of Canada, to kick off a concert dedicated to human rights.

The concert will include performances from Manitoba-born singer Chantal Kreviazuk, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and aboriginal drummers.

This is the Queen's 22nd visit to Canada. The royal couple, who have made stops in Halifax and Ottawa, will visit Waterloo, Ont., and Toronto before their tour ends July 6.

By The Canadian Press: OTTAWA - Hoping for insights from one of the world's most adept public figures, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff met privately with the Queen on Friday as the royal couple took a break from their hectic visit to Canada.

The Queen requested the meeting. And although Ignatieff wasn't sure why she asked, the leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition said he jumped at the chance.

"You're looking at the most experienced political figure in the world," Ignatieff said shortly after his audience.

"Any time you get a chance to meet the Queen, you say 'yes' right away."

The Queen arrived first, in the large drawing room at Rideau Hall, wearing a light purple flowered dress.

She casually remarked she had noticed the night before that "the ground hogs were busy" in the gardens around the Governor General's residence.

Ignatieff then arrived, thanking her for seeing him on her day off.

"I was very touched by that and appreciate it very much," he said as the two sat down to their private meeting.

Ignatieff later said "she's an absolute joy to meet" and that she "has a wonderful sense of the absurd."

"You have to in her job, because she sees a lot of amusing things happen. What is astounding about her is how … that sense of the comedy of life has survived 60 years of gruelling public service."

The Queen and Prince Philip were to depart Ottawa on Saturday for a whirlwind trip to Winnipeg before flying to Toronto to take in the Queen’s Plate.

One of the highlights of the visit came Thursday as the Queen addressed a crowd estimated at 100,000 during Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill.

With discontent brewing over his leadership, Ignatieff used the Friday meeting to garner any insight from a long-serving public figure.

Ignatieff's personal leadership poll numbers recently have been well below those of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and NDP Leader Jack Layton. Some Liberal MPs have also openly criticized the way Ignatieff has been doing his job, and how the party has dealt with controversial issues.

Ignatieff has a full summer travel schedule that will see him in China and on a bus tour across every Canadian province and territory.

The Opposition leader acknowledged Friday he has had difficulty resonating with voters — his party languishes below the Conservatives in the polls — but insisted he can improve Liberal prospects in time for an election.

"Every time I sit down with Canadians and talk to Canadians and I'm with Canadians, it seems to work," he said.

"I have to earn this, vote by vote, press scrum by press scrum, interview by interview."

During his six-day trip to China, Ignatieff will meet government and Communist Party officials in Beijing before travelling to Shanghai, where he'll deliver a speech at the China Institute of International Studies.

Ignatieff is hoping to underscore the different tactics his party would use, compared with the Conservatives, to enhance trade links with China while raising human-rights issues.

"I don't go to China thinking Canada's perfect. There are things on our (human rights) conscience as well, so I'm willing to have a very frank dialogue with the Chinese," he said.

"But I'm not going to start, you know, finger pointing."

July 1, 2010 : Queen Elizabeth told 100,000 people on Parliament Hill on Thursday that she could think of no better reason to celebrate than Canada's 143rd birthday.

The Queen was spending her first Canada Day in Ottawa since 1997.

At 84, the Queen said she has witnessed more than half of Canada's national history and praised what Canada stands for.

"This nation has dedicated itself to being a caring home for its own, a sanctuary for others and an example to the world," she said.

The monarch earned a roar of applause when she mentioned a Canadian moment of pride - the gold medal win for Canada's men's Olympic hockey team. The Queen also praised the commitment of the Canadian Forces, and said Canada has reason for optimism, even in trying times.

An estimated 100,000 party-goers packed Parliament Hill, compared with 35,000 last year.

Many of the thousands arrived before dawn to ensure a front-row seat to see, and perhaps meet, the Queen during her walkabout scheduled for later in the day.

The Queen spent Wednesday night at her official residence in Canada, Rideau Hall, and then sat for an official portrait on Thursday morning.

With her personal Canadian flag flying from the Peace Tower, the Queen was honoured with a flypast by CF-18 jetfighters and another by the aerobatic Snowbirds, as well as a march-past by the Guard of Honour.

The Queen was serenaded by Canadian artists including Quebec pop star Isabelle Boulay, bagpipers the Campbell Brothers, the Barenaked Ladies and the Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir.

She was also lauded by a host of luminaries, including Prime Minister Stephen Harper, actor Christopher Plummer and figure skater Joannie Rochette, who received a warm round of applause from the spectators, many decked out in red and white.

"Thank you for being there for me in my times of joy and sadness," said Rochette, who skated to a bronze medal in the Vancouver Olympics, just days after the sudden death of her mother.

"I had the sense that all of Canada was cheering us on," she said in French.

In England, thousands of people flocked to Trafalgar Square in London for Canada Day.

"Every year we have had 30,000 to 50,000 people that come to the square over the course of the day," said Canadian High Commissioner James Wright. "It's a showcase of what's best about Canada."

The festivities opened with a performance by the Canadian Tenors and included street hockey competitions. Visitors got to meet Mounties and see a totem pole being carved.

Canadian wine, beer and Tim Hortons coffee were all on tap. Canadian music played all day, and the festivities will culminate in a huge concert in the evening. Visitors could also enjoy bison burgers.

Gov. Gen. Michaëlle Jean celebrated Canada Day far from home.

Jean was at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China, where she made a speech, led a maple leaf flag-raising ceremony and enjoyed some beef from home at the Canadian pavilion.

Canadian troops in Afghanistan celebrated the nation's birthday by munching on hamburgers and hotdogs. Many wore red and white and listened to Bryan Adams tunes.

About 100 families were forced from their homes when water poured into their basements. More left their houses Friday morning and sought shelter.

Mayor James Wilson said a state of local emergency has been declared, adding that there has never been flooding to this extent before in the city of 15,000 people about 190 kilometres northeast of Regina.

The storm sewer system was overwhelmed and many streets were under water, including sections of Broadway Street in the heart of the city. Power was turned off in sections of Yorkton.

CBC Saskatchewan weather consultant Wayne Miskolczi said that according to Environment Canada 64 millimetres fell before midnight, and further heavy rain was recorded early Friday.

"I'm sure there are spots in Yorkton that have had well over 100 millimetres," he said.

Wilson said he's been told that some areas received 100 to 150 millimetres of rain in half an hour. An estimated 60 to 70 per cent of homes took in water, he said, and many businesses were flooded.

Yorkton has had floods before, but not like this, Wilson said. "Nothing to this extent." He said some people had to be carried away in front-end loaders.

The mayor added that Premier Brad Wall called him and assured him there will be quick provincial relief for people in need.

An emergency evacuation centre was set up at the Gallagher Centre, the city's main recreational centre and fairground. People making their way there were told to stick to higher routes. Some flooded-out residents were seeking refuge in hotels as far away as Regina.

"They were evacuating people in canoes," said Michael Paslofski, a spokesman with the Canadian Red Cross in Yorkton. "If this rain comes again, we're going to be in big trouble."

A CBC reporter said one couple paddled a canoe to their home Friday morning to pick up some clothing.

Additional room at the evacuation centre has been set aside in anticipation that there may be more problems later Friday. More thunderstorms were in the forecast.

Record-setting amounts of rain have been dumped on Saskatchewan in recent weeks. In Saskatoon, city council passed an emergency resolution Friday morning asking the province for disaster relief following flooding earlier in the week.

The town of Maple Creek in the southwest part of the province declared itself a disaster zone last month after more than 100 millimetres of rain fell in 48 hours.
