August 3, 2010 : By CBC News: CBC News BP has begun the "static kill" procedure at its damaged oil well in the Gulf of Mexico, a manoeuvre aimed at plugging the well for good.

BP has begun the long-awaited "static kill" procedure at its damaged oil well in the Gulf of Mexico - a manoeuvre that's aimed at plugging the well for good.

The static kill process followed an earlier "injectivity" test, which saw the well's defective blowout preventer being injected with an oil-like liquid to determine if it could handle the static kill process.

Positive results from that test led BP to go ahead with the static kill at 3 p.m. CT.

"The aim of these procedures is to assist with the strategy to kill and isolate the well, and will complement the upcoming relief well operation," a BP statement said.

The static kill manoeuvre involves pumping heavy mud and eventually cement down the well in an effort to push the oil back down. The whole process could take up to 61 hours, officials said.

Retired U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said Tuesday that even if the static kill is successful, the relief wells that BP has been drilling are still vital to plugging the well.

"This thing won't truly be sealed until those relief wells are done," Allen said.

BP said drilling for one of the two relief wells will resume Thursday. It could be finished later this month.

4.9 million barrels flowed out of BP well

Meanwhile, U.S. officials said Monday that the latest estimates suggest roughly 4.9 million barrels, or 780 million litres, of oil poured out of the well before a temporary cap stemmed the flow on July 15.

"Not all of this oil and gas flowed into the ocean; containment activities conducted by BP under the administration's direction captured approximately 800,000 barrels of oil prior to the capping of the well," U.S. officials said in a statement.

Local and state politicians, including Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, are warning BP that its responsibilities won't end when the well is plugged.

"Their work is only done when all of the oil is gone from the coast and our water, their work is only done when our wetlands and our coastline are restored to their pre-spill status, so we can go back to our way of life," Jindal said.

BP and federal officials have managed to contain large parts of the spill through skimmers, oil-absorbent booms and chemical dispersants meant to break up the oil.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which has been monitoring the environmental impact of the spill, conducted tests on the toxicity of chemical dispersants.

The agency released results Monday indicating that the "dispersant-oil mixtures are generally no more toxic to the aquatic test species than oil alone."

The EPA tested eight dispersants, and the tests confirmed that Corexit 9500A, the dispersant used in the Gulf of Mexico, is "generally no more or less toxic than the other available alternatives."

More than 30,000 people are currently involved in efforts to protect the shoreline and wildlife, U.S. officials said.

The spill began after an offshore drilling rig exploded off the coast of Louisiana on April 20, killing 11 workers. It is by far the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history.

Terrorism, the origins and sources

This is a forthcoming book published by Trafford Publishing Company. It’s a must read book, shocking, yet interesting!

This is the most interesting poetic, yet a powerful book, which captivates readers’ interest by hinting on real issues, but keeps readers in suspense. The most powerful of the literature is about the incidence of human organ harvesting from disappearing University students at the University of Sana’a in which the author hints an expose about his espionage strategies that he employed while working as an insider with those who participated in human organ trafficking cartels. The culprit, who was a Sudanese worker, was mercilessly using his cult of assassination of University students whose body parts sold around the world for thousands of dollars. A story that stunned the world when BBC world service anchored the arrest of Adam Mohammed, the Yemen University of Sana’a student holocaust executioner who was both a murderer and a victim of the cartel involved with human organ trafficking.

Terrorism and human organ trafficking are serious human rights issues, which have to be taken seriously worldwide. Therefore, governments have to work harder in halting such heinous practices among peaceful, yet unsuspecting citizens in their countries.

Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan: 130 B.C. lottery web accounts compromised: N.L. town mourns 4 lost at sea:

Canadian soldier Sapper Brian Collier, shown in an undated military photo, was killed by a bomb in Afghanistan on Tuesday. (DND)

Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan

A Canadian soldier, Sapper Brian Collier, has been killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

CBC NEWS: July 20, 2010: A Canadian soldier, Sapper Brian Collier, was killed by a bomb in Afghanistan Tuesday.

Collier was killed while on a foot patrol in the village of Nakhonay, in the eastern part of Panjwaii District.

He had dismounted from his vehicle near Nakhonay, about 15 kilometres west of Kandahar city, when he was killed by an improvised explosive device.

The 24-year-old Collier was born in Toronto and raised in Bradford, Ont. He was a member of the 1 Combat Engineer Regiment based at CFB Edmonton and was serving in Afghanistan with the 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment.

Collier, who was on his first deployment to Afghanistan, was previously injured in a separate IED blast.

"He fought hard to overcome his injury in order to get back to doing his job with his comrades," Brig.-Gen. Jon Vance, commander of Task Force Kandahar, said in a statement.

"Always quick to smile, Brian had an easygoing nature and a great sense of humour. Brian was an enthusiast of fine automobiles, and loved to spend time with his Audi," Vance said.

"Any Canadian who could have seen Brian in action would have been proud of him and proud of our country for the work being done with and for Afghans."

In another statement, Prime Minister Stephen Harper commended Collier's service, and extended condolences to the soldier's family and friends.

"The bravery and remarkable commitment of Canadians like Sapper Collier are bringing safety and stability to the people of Afghanistan," Harper said.

"Every day, their dedication and work protect our interests and values here at home and around the world. Sapper Collier's sacrifice will not be forgotten."

Collier's is the first Canadian death in Afghanistan since June 26, when Master Cpl. Kristal Giesebrecht, 34, and Pte. Andrew Miller, 21, died after the vehicle they were in was struck by an IED.

The latest death brings to 151 the total number of Canadian soldiers who have died as part of the Afghan mission since it began in 2002.

130 B.C. lottery web accounts compromised

The B.C. Lottery Corporation launched its online gambling website on the morning of July 14, but within hours, it had crashed. (BCLC)

B.C.'s privacy commissioner has confirmed that a breach that compromised users' account details forced the shutdown of the B.C. Lottery Corporation's new online casino PlayNow.com just hours after it was launched last week.

CBC News : July 20, 2010: B.C.'s privacy commissioner has confirmed that a breach that compromised users' account details forced the shutdown of the B.C. Lottery Corporation's new online casino PlayNow.com just hours after it was launched last week.

Elizabeth Denham says the personal information of more than 130 people was inadvertently shared with other customers on the website.

Denham says the problem was not caused by a hacker but by "data crossover" that made the names, contact information and, in some cases, credit card and bank information visible to other gamblers using the site.

Denham says the site will not be back up until the problem is fixed.

She has asked BCLC to pay for a credit monitoring service to ensure the victims of the breach won't be targeted by fraudsters.

BCLC unavailable to comment

The B.C. Lottery Corporation was unavailable to comment on the allegations that customer information and perhaps even cash in online accounts may have been compromised during the launch of its online casino.

On Tuesday, the lottery corporation's CEO failed to return calls from CBC News after scheduling an interview to discuss the website's problems.

The agency has repeatedly blamed an overwhelming rush of customers for the crash of the website last week.

"High player volumes to the Playnow.com website on July 15 exceeded server capacity, creating traffic and load issues," said a statement released by BCLC on Monday.

"When BCLC learned about this situation, immediate action was taken to shut down PlayNow.com and a full assessment was initiated."

NDP raises privacy concerns

Before the privacy commissioner confirmed the breach, the B.C. NDP said the continued disruption of the site was raising concerns about the protection of personal information and called on the government to tell the public what is going on with the new gambling website.

"The B.C. Liberal government must tell British Columbians what is going on," said MLA Shane Simpson. "The suggestion by at least one expert that the site crashed because it was hacked is troubling.

"If the government is going to get into online gaming, they need to protect people's privacy. People want to be able to trust that their private information, from credit card numbers to gambling histories, is not being compromised."

The gambling website crashed just hours after its launch last Thursday and has yet to be restarted. Billed as the first government-sanctioned online casino in North America, the site was immediately controversial.

That led some computer security experts to speculate that hackers may have targeted the site with an overwhelming number of hits in order to disrupt the servers.

But officials at BCLC have been quick to deny such speculation.

"To date, the preliminary results from the assessment and a third party security review show no evidence of external interference or hacking," said the statement.

Botnets can overwhelm websites

But Vaclav Vincalek, the head of Pacific Coast Information Systems, said the high number of hits the website immediately experienced could have been created by a hacker tool called a botnet, which the corporation might not have recognized as hacking.

Setting up a botnet involves sending out a computer virus that lies dormant in a network of home computers. The hacker then activates the virus and all those computers start sending normal looking information and requests to one target website at the same time, overwhelming its servers.

Botnets involving as many as 1.5 million computers have been detected on the internet by police, but most are estimated to involve an average of 20,000 computers, in order to avoid detection.

In some cases, botnets are created in an attempt to extort money from the operators of websites, said Vincalek. "So you build your army of botnets and you go after the gambling website like this ... and you say, 'Look, you either pay us X amount - $100,000 - or we shut you down,'" said Vincalek.

Bank of Canada raises rates again

The Bank of Canada raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points Tuesday, the second straight time it has done so after keeping rates at unprecedented lows for more than a year.

CBC NEWS: July 20, 2010: The Bank of Canada raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points Tuesday, the second straight time it has done so after keeping rates at unprecedented lows for more than a year.

In its latest policy decision, the bank opted to move its overnight lending rate to 0.75 per cent. The bank had previously raised its benchmark rate to 0.5 per cent in June after having kept rates at emergency lows since April 2009 in an attempt to stimulate the economy and spur lending.

Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney opted to raise interest rates Tuesday, the second consecutive hike after more than a year of record low rates. (Canadian Press)

In raising the rate, the bank moved to lightly hit the brakes on a Canadian economy that has shown signs of significant strength in recent months.

But the bank made it clear in its policy statement that it sees Canada's economy recovering more gradually than it did in its previous outlook in April. It now projects GDP growth of 3.5 per cent in 2010, 2.9 per cent in 2011 and 2.2 per cent in 2012.

The bank also made it clear that future rate hikes are not guaranteed.

"Any further reduction of monetary stimulus would have to be weighed carefully against domestic and global economic developments," the bank said in its statement.

Semitic illegal drug calls Khat spreads in North America and Europe

Further rate hikes can't be ruled out, BMO economist Michael Gregory noted.

"The bank's forward-looking language does not preclude further rate hikes," he said. "[But] the bank now has more wiggle room to raise rates ... if they want to. And we think they will."

While raising rates, the Bank of Canada clearly took a cautious approach, CIBC economist Avery Shenfeld said in a note.

"The Bank of Canada is like a poker player with a pair of jacks," he said, "not sure if it has the winning hand, but comfortable throwing in another quarter-point chip at each betting opportunity for now."

The overnight lending rate is the rate at which banks borrow from each other for short-term loans. While it is not directly related to the rates banks then offer their customers, they are often closely aligned.

Within hours of the announcement, three of Canada's major lenders - Toronto-Dominion Bank, Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and the Royal Bank of Canada - raised their prime lending rates to 2.75 per cent, up from 2.5, effective July 21.

The next scheduled date for the Bank of Canada to announce the overnight rate target is Sept. 8.

N.L. town mourns 4 lost at sea

About 1,000 people gathered at the wharf in Twillingate, N.L., on Monday night to remember four people who died at sea in a weekend boating accident. (CBC)

Residents of Twillingate, a small fishing town on Newfoundland's northeast coast, held an emotional candlelight vigil for four people killed in a weekend boating mishap.

Residents of a small fishing town on Newfoundland's northeast coast held an emotional candlelight vigil Monday night for four people killed in a weekend boating mishap.

The bodies of two boys and an unrelated man were pulled from waters near Twillingate on Sunday, while searchers have called off a search for another man's body.

A hush fell over a crowd of about 1,000 people - about a third of Twillingate's population - as a wreath carrying four candles was released onto the water.

Brothers James, top, and Josh Guy were killed Saturday when the boat carrying them on a pleasure cruise ran into rough waters. (CBC)

"Just whisper a word of comfort to each other, because we all need comfort right now, we all need healing," said resident Wayne Greenham.

The crowd came to remember Josh Guy, 10, and his older brother, James, as well as Paul Froude, a local fisherman who had accompanied the boys Saturday on what was meant to be a pleasure cruise under bright, sunny skies.

Residents said conditions at sea on Saturday belied the sunny weather, with heavy, rolling waves that are believed to have swamped the boat. At least three of the four had been wearing life-jackets.

The fourth person in the five-metre open boat had grown up in the area and moved away to work in the Northwest Territories. He had come home for a vacation. The official search for his body ended at nightfall Monday, with the Canadian Coast Guard classifying his case as "missing at sea."

The search included a military Cormorant helicopter, two Canadian Coast Guard ships and many local boats, which scoured a wide area northeast of Twillingate's harbour.

Searchers on the weekend found debris from the boat, including a cooler and a gas tank.

The candlelight vigil was held on the night that fireworks were to have been launched over the town, one of Newfoundland's oldest fishing villages and a popular tourist attraction. Some other festivities, including activities for children, have been cancelled.

Michelangelo Artfully Hid a Brain Stem in God's Throat by Wynne Parry LiveScience

Wed Jul 21, 10:31 AM : Michelangelo's depiction of God's throat in one panel of his Sistine Chapel fresco is awkward, which is odd for an artist so devoted to the study of anatomy. Now researchers have a theory to explain why: Michelangelo embedded an image of a human brain stem in God's throat, they find.

The Renaissance artist is known to have studied human anatomy by
dissecting cadavers when he was a young man, and continued until late in his 89 years. This practice informed his powerful depictions of the human and the divine.

But one panel of his Sistine Chapel frescoes contains an oddly lit and awkward image of God's neck and head as seen from below. The light illuminating the neck was different from that of the rest of the painting. Also, God's beard is foreshortened and appears to roll up along the sides of his jaw, and his bulbous neck has prompted speculation that Michelangelo intended to portray God with a goiter, or abnormally enlarged thyroid gland.

Two researchers - one a neurosurgeon, the other a medical illustrator - writing in the May issue of the journal Neurosurgery have another, more flattering theory. In this panel, which portrays the Separation of Light from Darkness, from the Book of Genesis, Michelangelo embedded a ventral view of the brainstem, they wrote.

Using a digital analysis, they compared the shadows outlining the features of God's neck and a photograph of a model of this section of the brain, which connects with the spinal cord, and found a close correspondence.

This is not the first anatomical image found hidden in the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel. In an article published in 1990, Frank Lynn Meshberger, a gynecologist, identified an
outline of the human brain in the Creation of Adam. Among other details, he noted that the shroud surrounding God had the shape of the cerebrum, or the upper part of the brain. A decade later, another researcher pointed out a kidney motif.

"We speculated that having used the brain motif successfully in the Creation of Adam almost a year earlier, Michelangelo wanted to once again associate the figure of God with a brain motif in the iconographically critical Separation of Light from Darkness," wrote authors Ian Suk, a medical illustrator, and neurosurgeon Rafael Tamargo, both of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

They do point out "the perils of overinterpreting a masterpiece," saying that not all art historians and other viewers will agree with their conclusions. Even so, they say their analysis, along with historical records, back the interpretation.

Greek terror group kills journalist: police

Last Updated: Monday, July 19, 2010 | 10:44 AM ET: The Associated Press : A Greek journalist was gunned down Monday outside his home in Athens, in an attack police say is linked to a domestic terrorist group.

Sokratis Giolias, 37, died after being shot more than 15 times before dawn in the capital's eastern neighbourhood of Ilioupoli. Police said bullet casings at the scene matched two 9-mm handguns used by the Greek terrorist group Sect of Revolutionaries.

Sect of Revolutionaries emerged following Greece's widespread rioting in December 2008, sparked by the fatal police shooting of a teenage boy. The group has vowed to carry out attacks against police and the news media, which it accuses of helping corrupt business interests mislead public opinion.

The group also attacked a TV station in Athens in February 2009. Giolias headed private Athens radio station Thema FM and wrote on a popular online news blog, Troktiko, which often deals with scandals.

The blog said two or three gunmen were believed to have shot Giolias, who was married with a young child. Police said they also believe more than one gunman was involved.

A car reported stolen was found burned out near the scene of the shooting, said police, who are investigating whether it was linked to the attack.

Journalist groups, the government and politicians condemned the attack.

"Democracy and freedom of speech cannot be gagged, [terrorized] or intimidated," government spokesman Giorgos Petalotis said. "The [government] unreservedly condemns this cowardly and cold-blooded murder."

Greek authorities have battled a wave of attacks by militant groups since the 2008 riots.

CBC NEWS : July 19, 2010: An African Union summit officially began in Kampala on Monday, a week after twin bombings killed 76 people watching the World Cup soccer final in the Ugandan capital.

The arrival of delegates from 49 countries "shows that terrorists cannot defeat us," said Uganda's foreign minister, Sam Kutesa. Extra security is in place to protect leaders and their support staff.

The Somalia-based Islamic insurgent group, al-Shabaab, claimed responsibility for the July 11 suicide bombings. The militants warned that attacks would continue if Uganda did not withdraw the troops it contributes to the African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia.

Ugandan police said on the weekend they have detained 20 suspects in connection with the bombings.

The headline theme for the summit is maternal and child health. But the agenda also includes peace and security issues, infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and food security.

Most of Africa's heads of state will be in Kampala for the summit, which wraps up July 27.

Thousands of Afghan soldiers and police are patrolling Kabul, trying to secure the capital for a major international conference.

CBC: July 19, 2010: Thousands of Afghan soldiers and police are patrolling Kabul, trying to secure the capital for a major international conference set for Tuesday.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are among the officials and diplomats from 60 countries who will attend the one-day meeting where Afghan authorities will try to showcase the progress their country is making in its painful journey to self-security.

Securing the capital won't be easy. A suicide bombing in Kabul on Sunday killed three people and a Taliban bomb-making expert was captured in the capital on Friday.

At a peace conference in May, militants attacked security forces and managed to land a rocket about 100 metres from the meeting site.

Many Afghans are skeptical that Tuesday's conference will change the daily reality of suicide bombings and war. Many foreign countries - Canada included - have been critical of the corruption and incompetence that plagues Afghanistan's corridors of power.

But the UN's top diplomat in Afghanistan, Staffan de Mistura, said the West is ready to hand over power to Afghans.

"They are more prepared than before," he said. "Don't forget. Afghanistan is made of very proud people who feel extremely strongly about managing their own future."

Insurgency mounts counteroffensive

The conference attendees hope to see enough progress in how Afghanistan is securing the insurgency to allow them to continue with their plans to withdraw foreign forces.

But the conference comes at a time when the Taliban insurgency is growing increasingly brazen.

The Taliban are mounting a counteroffensive aimed at the Afghan government and a coalition of international troops. NATO and Afghan forces have been aggressively moving into areas controlled by the Taliban.

Last month, 103 foreign soldiers - including four Canadians - were killed in Afghanistan, making it the deadliest month for international forces since they were first deployed in the country nine years ago.

Another 56 NATO soldiers have died so far this month - including an American killed Monday by a bomb blast in southern Afghanistan.

China passes U.S. as top energy consumer

For the first time in more than a century, a country other than the United States consumed more energy than any other nation, as China grabbed the top spot last year.

CBC NEWS:July 19, 2010 : For the first time in more than a century, a country other than the United States consumed more energy than any other nation, as China grabbed the top spot last year.

Citing data from the International Energy Agency, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday that China was the world's most voracious consumer of energy in 2009.

China consumed 2,252 million tonnes of "oil equivalent" last year, topping the U.S. tally of 2,170 tonnes by roughly four per cent.

Oil equivalent is the term the IEA uses to bring all forms of energy into a comparable form, including crude oil, nuclear, coal, natural gas, hydroelectricity, wind and solar power.

China was forecast to overtake the U.S. at some point over the next decade. But the global recession appears to have sped up the process as its economy continued to expand at a double-digit pace while the U.S. economy declined and oil consumption flatlined.

Only 10 years ago, China's energy consumption was half that of the United States.

"The fact that China overtook the U.S. as the world's largest energy consumer symbolizes the start of a new age in the history of energy," IEA chief economist Fatih Birol was quoted as saying.

China had already passed the United States as the world's largest polluter several years ago.

With a population of a little over 300 million, the United States still uses much more energy, per capita, than China does.

In terms of the use of crude oil specifically, the IEA says the United States remains well out in the lead, consuming some 19 million barrels per day. But China's economy relies on coal for much of its electricity generation, and its crude consumption is also climbing from its current level of just over nine million barrels per day.

China's electricity demand is forecast to increase by 1,000 gigawatts over the next 15 years - equivalent to the U.S.'s total electricity output at the moment.

India train crash death toll hits 61

Last Updated: Monday, July 19, 2010 | 12:58 PM ET : The Associated Press: A speeding express train plowed into a stationary passenger train in eastern India on Monday, killing 61 people in a crash so powerful it sent the roof of one car flying onto an overpass.

Officials said they could not rule out sabotage.

Residents crawled over the twisted wreckage trying desperately to free survivors before rescue workers arrived with heavy equipment to cut through the metal.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, who rushed to the site, raised the possibility the crash could have been another case of sabotage, two months after Maoist rebels were blamed for a derailment that killed 145 people.

"We have some doubts in our mind" about whether it was an accident, she said.

The crash happened about 2 a.m. local time when the Uttarbanga Express slammed into the Vananchal Express as it left the platform at Sainthia station, about 200 kilometres north of Calcutta.

The accident destroyed two passenger cars and a luggage car, turning them into a tangle of twisted metal. The passenger cars were reserved for those on the cheapest tickets and such carriages are usually packed to capacity.

The force of the crash was so intense the roof of one car flew into the air and landed on an overpass above the tracks. Local residents climbing through the debris searching for survivors were later joined by rescue workers using heavy equipment to cut through the metal.

"I was sleeping when I felt a huge jolt and heard a loud noise and then the train stopped," passenger Lakshman Bhaumik told local television. Bhaumik survived with minor injuries.

Rescuers recovered 61 bodies from the crash site and 125 other people were injured, said Surajit Kar Purkayastha, a top police official. The two drivers of the Uttarbanga Express were among the dead, Banerjee said.

Local residents help survivors

Rescue teams arrived about three hours after the accident, local residents said. Before that, locals scrambled to help survivors out of the trains and pull out bodies.

"For many hours it was just the local residents helping and it was very difficult to help without any equipment," the unidentified man told NDTV television channel.

Police official Humayun Kabir told NDTV, however, rescue workers reached the site within an hour of the crash.

Bhupinder Singh, the top police official in West Bengal, said the death toll could rise. He said it was too early to know how many people remained inside the coaches.

India's federal Home Ministry rushed several hundred members of the National Disaster Relief Force to the accident site to assist with search-and-rescue operations, a government statement said.

The disaster was the second major train crash in the state of West Bengal in the past two months. On May 28, a passenger train derailed and was hit by an oncoming cargo train in a crash that killed 145 people. Authorities blamed sabotage by Maoist rebels for that crash.

Accidents are common on India's sprawling rail network, one of the world's largest, with most blamed on poor maintenance.

Barack Obama urges Republican lawmakers to support a bill to extend emergency benefits to millions of unemployed Americans.

CBC NEWS: July 19,2010: Barack Obama urged Republican lawmakers to support a bill that would extend emergency benefits to millions of unemployed Americans on Monday. In a press conference at the White House Rose Garden he blasted Republican critics for their "lack of faith in the American people."

"These are honest, decent, hard-working folks who have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own," Obama said. "The same people who didn't have any problems spending money on tax breaks for the richest Americans are saying we shouldn't offer benefits to middle-class Americans."

Unemployment in the United States is at 9.5 per cent, and benefits for millions of Americans have dried up in recent months. The issue of temporarily extending emergency unemployment benefits has come up three times in recent weeks, but Republican senators have blocked it each time.

Obama has described the bill as crucial to rebuilding the economy, but Republican critics say they won't support it unless it is paid for through the budget and not through deficit spending.

"It's time to stop holding workers laid off in this recession hostage to Washington politics," Obama urged.

The unemployment benefits bill is scheduled for another vote tomorrow in the Senate.

Thu Jul 29, 2:14 PM :By Patricia Zengerle: WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama tried to revive his common touch on Thursday with a mainly light-hearted appearance on daytime television where five women hosts grilled him about his Blackberry, Lindsay Lohan and the Afghan war.

His appearance was the first by a sitting U.S. president on a daytime talk show. It allowed Obama to appeal directly to a targeted audience as he fights flagging poll numbers while he and his fellow Democrats try to avoid big losses in the November congressional election.

"The View" typically draws 3-4 million viewers and is particularly popular with women who are home at its late-morning air time.

In a wide-ranging interview, Obama defended his Afghan war strategy and efforts to lift the country out of recession, but said he expected things would get better, if over time.

"If we get our mojo back over the next several months, then I am absolutely confident that we are going to be doing terrific, but we're going to have to make some fundamental structural changes as we go along," he said.

He said he was frustrated with the anger of political debate, and blamed the media for a recent "phony controversy" that led to the firing of a black Agriculture Department employee who appeared to be making racist comments in an edited videotape that was shown repeatedly by conservative media.

"When you feel as if every single initiative that we're doing is subject to Washington politics instead of 'is this good for the country,' that can be frustrating," he said.

WAR AND POP CULTURE

The Afghanistan war is worth fighting, Obama said, when asked about the recent leak of documents painting a bleak picture of the unpopular conflict, which bitterly divides his own Democratic party.

"If you've got chaos ... in this region where there's no functioning government and warlords and terrorist affiliates are able to operate, that is going to be that much tougher for us to make sure that they are not attacking us," Obama said.

Obama also showed he has some grasp of popular culture. He knew that actress Lindsay Lohan had been sent to jail, although he said he had not heard of "Snooki," the star of a popular reality television show, and dodged a question about tapes of angry telephone calls by actor Mel Gibson.

Obama also lamented his inability to enjoy technology.

He is the first president to use a Blackberry, but he can't enjoy the jokes and pictures that fill most inboxes.

"I have a Blackberry, but only 10 people have (access to) it," he said. "And I've got to admit it's no fun, because they think it's going to be subject to the presidential records act, so nobody sends me the juicy stuff."

Missing Alberta couple's SUV found

CBC NEWS: July 16,2010:T he RCMP said Friday they have found an SUV belonging to an Alberta couple who were last seen on July 3.

Investigators are conducting a forensic examination of the Hyundai Tucson vehicle. Police have not said where it was found as the location is considered a crime scene.

"We consider this foul play," RCMP Assistant Commissioner Peter Hourihan said earlier Friday afternoon about the disappearance of Lyle McCann, 78, and his wife, Marie McCann, 77.

The McCanns left St. Albert, Alta., on July 3 headed for British Columbia and have not been seen since that day.

RCMP call Travis Edward Vader, 38, a person of interest in the case of a missing couple from Alberta.

The discovery of the SUV comes two hours after police announced they were looking for a specific "person of interest," considered dangerous, in the case.

Police said they want to know the whereabouts of Travis Edward Vader, 38, of no fixed address. Police are not calling him a suspect and they say they just want to talk to him.

Vader has multiple outstanding warrants on unrelated matters and is known to be in possession of firearms, Hourihan said.

Hourihan said Vader should be considered dangerous and people should not approach him. He said they should simply contact police if they have information about Vader, who also has a history of drug abuse.

The McCanns were using a 1999 green-and-white Gulf Stream Sun Voyager recreational vehicle and towing the SUV. They intended to be in Abbotsford, B.C., to meet their daughter at the airport on July 10 but never arrived.

The RV was found on fire at the Minnow Lake campground near Edson, Alta., on July 5 but the SUV, bearing Alberta licence plate ZPK 289, was missing.

Marie Ann McCann and Lyle Thomas McCann were last seen July 3.

Hourihan also addressed criticism about the RCMP investigation. Police didn't launch an investigation into the McCanns' disappearance until five days after their burned RV was found.

It was also revealed Thursday that the RCMP didn't take contact information from a father and daughter from Prince George who reported seeing a Hyundai Tucson SUV in the B.C. city on July 8.

"A couple of mistakes have been made. I acknowledge that." Hourihan said. He admitted police were "a bit slow in getting going" after the motorhome was found because information wasn't passed on.

An internal review is underway and one RCMP officer in Edson has been placed on administrative duties because of the information foul-up, Hourihan said. Police have received more than 100 tips in the investigation.

Calgary man among 29 killed in Iraqi hotel fire
Man worked for Terraseis International, a geophysical survey company

CBC NEWS: July 16,2010: A Calgary man was among the at least 29 people killed in a fire in a five-storey hotel in Sulaimaniyah, northern Iraq, the company he worked for confirmed in a statement Friday.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm reports that eight Terraseis employees died in the fire," Terraseis International said in its statement.

The Dubai-based company conducts geophysical surveys, often used in oil exploration and production, and its employees were in Iraq doing sub-contract work for Calgary-based Talisman Energy.

The other Terraseis employees killed were from several different countries, including South Africa, the U.K. and Venezuela.

Terraseis chairman Kevin Plintz confirmed to CBC that the Canadian killed was from Calgary. Plintz also said two other Canadians are being treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire in the Soma Hotel began late Thursday night and was likely sparked by an electrical short, the local chief of police, Brig. Gen. Najim-al-Din Qadir, said. The investigation is still underway but officials have said it was not an act of terrorism.

Qadir said the dead included people from Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Canada, Ecuador, Venezuela and China, with some working for foreign oil companies.

Many died of smoke inhalation

Neil Arun, a journalist based in Iraq, said at least 40 people were hurt, and most of the casualties were believed to have died from smoke inhalation.

"A lot of the people also seem to have died after trying to leave their rooms, after trying to jump from their windows," Arun said Friday.

Marwan Assad, a Kurd with dual British citizenship, said he came to the hotel to visit two friends but never made it to their room. He said the fire broke out when he was on the third floor and smoke quickly enveloped the hallway, forcing him to stumble blindly in search of a way out.

"I saw an open door and a man lying dead in the room because he suffocated from the smoke," Assad said at Sulaimaniyah Emergency Hospital, where he was about to undergo surgery for breaks to both his legs. "I entered the room and threw myself from the window."

Sulaimaniyah fire department head Brig. Yadgar Mohammed Mustafa confirmed that many of the victims succumbed to smoke inhalation. He said the lack of fire escapes contributed to the high death toll.

Farouq Mulla Mustafa, general director of the AsiaCell mobile phone company, said four of the company's engineers from the Philippines, Iraq, Sri Lanka and Cambodia were among the dead.

Sulaimaniyah, located 260 kilometres northeast of Baghdad, is the commercial capital of Iraq's Kurdish region and the region's second largest city.

Wind backs off targeting Rogers

CBC NEWS: July 16,2010: Wind Mobile has backed off targeting Rogers with a promotion that seeks to lure its customers specifically, with Bell and Telus now included in the deal.

The upstart wireless carrier on Thursday announced a promotion that offered Rogers customers - including those on its Fido and yet-to-be-launched Chatr brands - a $150 credit for taking their business to Wind. The deal, a continuation of a promotion previously aimed at all three major carriers, is intended to alleviate the early termination fees some customers face when cancelling their existing contracts.

On Friday, Wind applied the offer to customers of all carriers. Scott Campbell, chief marketing officer for Wind, said the deal was expanded because customers asked for it.

"Yes, the offer was in the spirit of competition and is for all of Rogers' customers, no matter which of the myriad of Rogers' brands they come from," he said. "But Wind is about listening to customers and customers of other carriers told us they were interested, so we'll honour their requests, too."

Rogers is launching its new Chatr brand at some point this summer to compete with new carriers that are offering unlimited services, including Wind, Mobilicity and Public Mobile.

Amit Kaminer, an analyst for The SeaBoard Group telecommunications consultancy, had said Wind's initial move against Rogers was a counter to Chatr.

"From a marketing perspective, it aims to bind the three Rogers brands together such that consumers are made aware that all three names are radiating from the same wireless tower," he said.

Rumours emerged this week, however, that Bell may also be planning to offer low-cost unlimited services through its Solo brand, and if that happens, Telus could be forced to follow suit.

Mobilicity chairman John Bitove has harshly criticized Rogers' Chatr plan and said he intends to file a complaint with the Competition Bureau if the brand's launch goes ahead. Bitove has said the Competition Act expressly prohibits the launch of flanker brands that are designed to undermine competitors.

Public Mobile said Rogers will only end up hurting itself in the long run by starting up another discount brand.

"Rogers can't afford to start re-pricing their existing customers," said spokesperson Lisa Pappas. "By launching Chatr, Rogers has created risk for themselves, and benefited us by legitimizing the market segment we are focused on."

Police say US woman made up carjacking story to cover up that she crashed while having sex

Published: Thursday, July 15, 2010 | 8:40 AM ET : Canadian Press The Associated Press : VINELAND, N.J. - Authorities say a New Jersey woman told them she was carjacked to cover up the fact that her car crashed because she was having sex.

The 23-year-old had initially told police she got lost on Sunday and asked a man for directions. Police say she told them the man pulled her out of the car at gunpoint and threw her to the ground.

Police told The Daily Journal that she later admitted she picked up a man and let him drive, and the car crashed into a tree while they were engaged in a sex act. Officers say the car had been set on fire.

The woman is accused of filing a false police report. She has refused to identify the man.

Avastin fails to slow breast cancer: FDA

Last Updated: Friday, July 16, 2010 | 2:15 PM ET :The Associated Press : Federal health scientists said Friday that followup studies of a Roche breast cancer drug show it failed to slow tumour growth or extend patient lives, opening the door for a potential withdrawal in that indication.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Roche's blockbuster Avastin in 2008 based on early-stage trials showing it shrank tumours caused by breast cancer. The decision was controversial because drugs for cancer patients who have never been treated before must usually show evidence they extend lives.

Avastin's so-called "accelerated approval" was based on the condition that later studies would show a survival benefit.

But in briefing documents posted online, FDA reviewers said two followup studies recently submitted by Roche failed to show that Avastin significantly extended lives compared to chemotherapy alone.

Additionally, the FDA said more recent data did not confirm the tumour shrinkage seen in earlier studies. Patients taking Avastin showed significantly more side-effects, including high blood pressure, fatigue and abnormal white blood cell levels.

Panel to review drug

On Tuesday, the FDA will ask a panel of outside cancer experts to review the evidence on Avastin. The panel's recommendations are not binding, but the FDA usually follows their guidance.

The FDA has the option to remove drug's approval for breast cancer. Avastin is also approved for colon, lung, kidney and brain cancer. The drug was Roche's top-selling cancer treatment last year with global sales of $5.9 billion US.

Roche is headquartered in Basel, Switzerland, and its biotech unit, Genentech, is based in south San Francisco.

Avastin was the first drug to fight cancer by stopping nutrients from reaching tumours.

Such "targeted therapies" were thought to hold promise for eliminating chemotherapy, but the two approaches are now used in combination.

A spoonful of Sugar

Canadian comic Sugar Sammy conquers the world one joke at a time.

Montreal-born Indo-Canadian comedian Sugar Sammy is playing the Toronto Just For Laughs Festival this week.

Montreal-born Indo-Canadian comedian Sugar Sammy is playing the Toronto Just For Laughs Festival this week. (Just For Laughs)

CBC NEWS: July 7, 2010 : Sugar Sammy's stand-up resume reads like a Rand McNally atlas. The 34-year-old comic arrives in Toronto for this week's Just for Laughs festival on the heels of a gig in Saudi Arabia. Over the past few years he's travelled constantly, performing in far-flung locales like Lebanon, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ireland, Hong Kong, Thailand, the U.S. and India.

Sugar Sammy's comedic resume reads like a Rand McNally atlas - he's played everywhere from Saudi Arabia to Ireland to India to the U.S.

Thanks largely to his facility in four languages, Sammy – born Samir Khullar in Montreal's ethnically diverse Côte-des-Neiges district – has crafted a career with massive market reach. He grew up speaking Punjabi with his family, and learned Hindi primarily from Bollywood films. English was the language he spoke with his friends and, despite his protestations, Sammy was sent to a French school. As a result, he learned how to connect with a wide range of audiences.

Chatting with him during a recent phone interview, it's easy to see how he earned the nickname "Sugar Sammy" at McGill University – smooth and unfailingly polite, he doesn't seem at all stressed out by his whirlwind schedule, or the inherent difficulties of tweaking material for assorted corners of the planet.

"I treat every market differently," he explains. "Different cultures have different reference points and sensibilities. For me, it always involves going to a country and figuring it out. Sitting there with the promoter or the kitchen staff or the concierge, figuring out what works and what doesn't. I'll just say, 'Look, I'm a foreigner, I just got here. What themes can I explore?'"

Sammy's routines focus primarily on his dating life, observations about race and his family – his father's ongoing struggle to understand the world wide web is rich comic fodder. Here's a sample joke about English Canada: "There aren't a lot of coloured people in Thunder Bay. You know you're in a white town when the hotel cleaning staff is white."

In one of his early bits, Sammy lamented the lack of glamorous media archetypes for Indo-Canadians: "Every ethnicity's got their role models on TV, right? Hispanic people got Antonio Banderas, who's suave, debonaire. Chinese people have Jackie Chan, who can whip some ass... Black people got Denzel, who's like the sex symbol. Who do we have, man? We got Apu from the goddamn Simpsons."

Sammy was influenced by black American stand-ups who also made race a big part of their acts: Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence. "Eddie Murphy is probably my favourite of all time. I love how fresh and young and unafraid he was to tackle things. He just had a smoothness about him on stage. You wanted to be him. He was in control. I think he's been a huge influence in terms of the way I deliver my material as well."

Although Sammy's English-language material isn't as controversial (or as laden with F-bombs) as Murphy's, he takes a slightly more incendiary approach in French. He grew up in Montreal – and still lives with his parents on the rare occasions when he visits his home province – but initially focused on English gigs there. He's only recently started to make a foray into Quebec's French-speaking market. Last summer, Sammy caused a media ruckus at a French-language Juste pour rire/Just for Laughs gala in Montreal. The source of the controversy was this joke: "There are two kinds of Quebecers: Those who are educated, cultivated and well-raised – and those who voted Yes."

"It was very good," he recalls of his referendum gag. "It was taking on the separatists. And no one's done it to their faces. Every other Anglo's done it the other way around, going to an English audience and talking about Quebec separation. A lot of Montreal comics have done that. But to go in front of [a largely] separatist audience and say that was another challenge. And that's what made news.

"It was just kind of me going in and shaking things up and being funny. It's like poking fun at your friends." He delivered the infamous line with a smile, an indication that he wasn't going for the jugular.

The risk paid off. The federalist Sammy recently did some shtick with Parti Québécois Leader Pauline Marois on Le Gala Les Olivier, an award show for Quebec comedians. Clearly, his French-language profile has risen.

"In English Canada, I talk about my family, my personal stuff. Whereas in Quebec, the first thing you've got to talk about is, 'Well, what's my place in this society? What comes to mind right away when I'm talking to these people?' It has to go that way. If it doesn't, then I feel like I'm cheating myself, and I'm not saying what I want to say."

Make no mistake, this business-savvy guy has a plan. Like most comedians who attain a certain level of success, Sammy is hoping to make the transition to TV and film work. And, of course, the globetrotting will continue.

For someone who's done so well in the often brutal world of stand-up, Sammy seems exceptionally well-adjusted. His desire to tell jokes doesn't appear to come from the dark recesses of a troubled soul: "I'm not looking for anything else when I'm out there. I love making people laugh – that's the number one thing, that's my passion."

His parents had no problem with his career choice, and are thrilled with his success. Now if only his father could figure out the internet. "He doesn't know how it works," says Sammy. "I was looking at YouTube, just checking out some of my clips and the comments. He came in and saw me and said, 'Oh wow, they're playing you on the internet again? They're playing you a lot!'"

Sugar Sammy performs at the Toronto Just for Laughs festival on July 9 and 10.

I must surmise that it's inspired by the jwcurry's birthday bowling evening from last week, and two words that lil' Matthew's been saying recently: Action Power! Matt, incidentally, turns four at the end of this month. Here, I believe, Alistair references my super bowling ability to hurl the ball down the lane, practically without touching the floor...oops. And I was wearing my über-cool blue Hawaiian (bowling) shirt that night. Also in the poem, there's a stanza referring to a photo I captured of the alleged bag thief à la movie Blow Up. Can you believe it? Some dude, in the cover of darkness and crazy lights of the bowling alley, has the stones to sit among us and steal a brief case. Wow.

Lobs rocks
At those that
Stand still
With a back spin
To kick them up

Flashing lights
Disco music
And a festive
Tropical shirt
Fires cannonballs

With apples
French toast
Cheerios
And hope

Catches the

Before the roll
Is revealed
The

Dormant

Each moment
Caught in time
Of the celebration
Of the big Five-O

The moncitizenship is the new Canadian governmental task. The diplomatic lines of Republics of Yemen and Poland are non grata with their masks.

The few days we don’t hear gunfire or explosions, we feel really happy."

Shield Pakistan’s civilians from the horrors of living inside a human rights-free zone.

Dear M.T. ,

Northwest Pakistan, including the Swat valley - once known as the "Switzerland of Pakistan" for its scenic and natural beauty - is now the center of a deadly triangle between the Taliban, Pakistani army forces and U.S. drone attacks.

Relentless fighting between these groups has left millions of civilians homeless and unable to care for their families. Countless more have lost their lives in this appalling, human rights-free zone.

As Parveen, a girl's school teacher who now holds her classes in a tent after the original school building was bombed by the Taliban, sees it: "The few days we don't hear gunfire or explosions, we feel really happy."

The innocent men, women and children trapped in the middle of this violence are not acceptable casualties of war. The harm caused to them during such indiscriminate attacks is a clear reason why we must draw a line now.

Act now to ensure that the civilians of northwest Pakistan won't be forgotten.

The human impact of conflict in Pakistan

We created the website eyesonpakistan.org to help give private citizens and policy makers access to these previously inaccessible conflict zones. Our thinking was that if we could help people visualize the extent of the violence and human rights abuses in the region, then decisive action would be taken to correct it.

In just a matter of weeks, thousands have visited the website and by using our interactive maps have been able to see the destruction of Pakistan's schools, hospitals, and homes with their own eyes. The BBC, Huffington Post and other news sites have reported widely on our efforts to expose abuses committed against civilians in the region.

Now that attention is finally starting to focus on Pakistan's civilians, we must ensure that clear action steps will follow.

Your support means that we can continue to provide compelling imagery and analysis of human rights abuses in Pakistan. This research reinforces our case that the Pakistani and U.S. governments must do more to protect human rights in their strategies for northwest Pakistan.

With your help, we can keep our eyes on Pakistan's civilians, even when it seems like the rest of the world has forgotten them.

Thank you for taking action,

Flood waters inundate the southwestern Chinese city of Chongqing. (AFP/Getty Images / July 20, 2010)

CBC NEWS: July 21, 2010: More than 1,000 people have died or disappeared in severe flooding in China so far this year, and the heaviest rains are still to come, a senior official warned Wednesday.

This year's floods, which have caused tens of billions of dollars in damage already, have exacted the highest death toll since 1998, which saw the highest water levels in 50 years.

The waters have killed 701 people and left 347 missing, officials said.

With the typhoon season rolling in, Liu Ning, general secretary of the government's flood prevention agency, told a news conference authorities must ramp up preparations.

"Since 60 to 80 per cent of the annual rain level occurs in June, July and August, we should be prepared to prevent and combat potential disasters," Liu said.

Tropical storm Chanthu is expected to hit China's southern island of Hainan and Guangdong province this weekend. Six to eight typhoons are expected this year.

Already, three-quarters of China's provinces have been plagued by flooding and 25 rivers have reached record-high water levels, Liu said.

Flooding, particularly along the Yangtze River basin, has overwhelmed reservoirs, swamped towns and cities, and caused landslides that have smothered communities, including toppling 645,000 houses. The Three Gorges Dam faced its highest levels ever this week and water breached the massive dam.

"Although water levels in the upper stretches of the Yangtze River have surpassed that of 1998, the flood situation is still not as severe because the Three Gorges Dam has played a key role in preventing floods along the river this year," Liu said.

The overall damage totals about $21 billion US, Liu said.

Searchers first found the body of a 10-year-old boy around 2:30 a.m. NT near a small island not far from the small fishing community of 2,000. Neil Peet, with the Maritime Rescue Centre in St. John's, said the child was wearing a life-jacket.

Later in the morning, the body of the boy's eight-year-old brother and that of a man were located.

The search was continuing for a second man who left Twillingate with the group who left Saturday afternoon in an open five-metre boat for a pleasure cruise of the islands around Notre Dame Bay. They were seen safe on the ocean in the afternoon but didn't return in the evening.

Peet said the two boys were brothers, but were not related to the adults in the boat.

A shrimper returning to Twillingate about 10 p.m. NT spotted a cooler and life-jacket in the water and reported the discovery to authorities.

A Cormorant search and rescue helicopter from Gander and two coast guard auxiliary vessels began the search after midnight.

He said the bodies were recovered not far from where officials suspect a mishap occurred.

The boat has not been located, but searchers have found a gas can and some clothing.

Peet said Sunday morning that fog and three-metre swells were hampering search efforts. Visibility was at less than a quarter of a nautical mile, he said. Spoke with SAR. That was revised to about three nautical miles later in the day.

The waters off Twillingate are popular with tourists because the area is known for whale-watching and icebergs.

Falun Gong Asks Media Not To Echo Chinese Regime's Canned

Denials: Lives Hang In the Balance

Statement of Falun Dafa Association of Canada, July 28, 2006

When the report solidifying organ harvesting from Falun Gong practitioners in China was

published on July 6th by David Kilgour, former Secretary of State (Asia Pacific), and

international human rights lawyer, David Matas, we fully expected the Chinese regime to deny this proof as a simple Google search with the words: "China Denies" brings up over 7,790,000 hits.

animated_crown.gif

The moncitizenship is the new Canadian governmental task. The diplomatic lines of Republics of Yemen and Poland are non grata with their masks.

M.T. Al-Mansouri

Any other nation faced with this allegation happening in their own country would certainly state that they would investigate such horrific allegations. However, the CCP continues to waste timeand effort to deny these claims and attack Falun Gong with blatant hate propaganda and still refuses to investigate to protect human beings from these crimes.

The CCP has a 60-year brutal history of suppression and killing through decades of brutal

campaigns like the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and the Tiananmen Square student massacre. They continue to cover up and deny their proven atrocities time and time again and for some bad reason Western media continues to give their denials air time instead of standing up to stop them from committing these atrocities.

When allegations of organ harvesting broke in March regarding Sujiatun hospital it took over 3 weeks for the CCP to respond which is ample time to clean up any evidence. It was after this delay that they invited the west to a guided show tour of this hospital. It was not an independent investigation.

The CCP’ s denial statement against the organ harvest report published on July 6th was

written and published on the exact same day the report was released. They attacked the

report, not on the merits of the evidence or the process, but on its conclusion. They continue to do the same today.

The CCP statement says nothing of the numerous Chinese state-run websites that

advertised organs for sale to foreigners for up to $160,000US with a maximum 2-week wait time. Many of these sites were taken down immediately after the organ harvesting practices were revealed.

They say nothing of reports as far back as 1994 from media and the US State Department confirming that the Chinese authorities have been harvesting prisoner’s organs for years; according to human rights groups they have done so without real consent.

And they say nothing of the 40,000+ organ transplants done in China that are not

accounted for.

If the CCP firmly stand by their conviction that this is not happening then we demand they allow an independent investigation into China to randomly investigate prisons and labour camps where Falun Gong people are being held. If what the CCP says is true they will have no issue with this request.

9270257453?profile=original

9270273894?profile=original

The Associated Press : Last Updated: Thursday, July 8, 2010/11:57 AM ET : One of the biggest Russia-U.S. spy swaps since the Cold War was in motion Thursday, as a Russian convicted of spying for the United States was reportedly flown to Vienna from a Moscow prison.

Igor Sutyagin, a Russian arms control analyst serving a 14-year sentence for spying for the United States, told relatives he was one of 11 convicted spies in Russia who would be freed in exchange for 10 people charged in the United States with being Russian agents.

Sutyagin's lawyer in Moscow said a journalist called Sutyagin's family to inform them that he was seen walking off a plane in Vienna on Thursday. However, the lawyer was not able to get confirmation from Russian authorities.

Sutyagin, who worked as an arms control and military analyst at the Moscow-based think-tank U.S.A. and Canada Institute, was arrested in 1999 and convicted in 2004 on charges of passing information about nuclear submarines and other weapons to a British company that investigators claimed was a CIA cover.

Sutyagin's brother said Sutyagin saw a list of 11 prisoners in Russia who are being traded for 10 people arrested in the United States last week for being unregistered Russian agents.

Russian and U.S. officials have refused to comment on any possible swap.

Meanwhile, defence lawyers in New York say they expect an immediate resolution for their 10 clients charged with spying in the United States.

A federal court in New York was to decide the fate of those 10 suspects later Thursday.

Neither country would confirm an exchange was planned. But the machinations — including a meeting in Washington between U.S. officials and the Russian ambassador on Wednesday — had all the hallmarks as the two former Cold War enemies moved to tamp down tensions stirred by the U.S. arrests.

Dmitry Sutyagin said his brother remembered only one other person on the Russian list of spies to be exchanged — Sergei Skripal, a colonel in Russian military intelligence who in 2006 was sentenced to 13 years on charges of spying for Britain.

A spokesman for British Prime Minister David Cameron would not confirm or deny a possible London tie to the spy swap.

"This is primarily an issue for the U.S. authorities," spokesman Steve Field said.

Five suspects charged with spying in the U.S. were hurriedly ordered to New York on Wednesday, joining five others already behind bars there, after Sutyagin spilled the news of the swap from his penal colony near the Arctic Circle.

In a federal indictment unsealed Wednesday, the 10 suspects in New York and an 11th person, who was released on bail by a court in Cyprus and is now a fugitive, were formally charged.

Arraignment hearing set

The moncitizenship is the new Canadian governmental task. The diplomatic lines of Republics of Yemen and Poland are non grata with their masks.

The indictment charged all of them with conspiring to act as secret agents and charged nine with conspiracy to commit money laundering. It demanded that those accused of money laundering return any assets used in the offence.

Attorney Robert Baum, who represents defendant Anna Chapman, said late Wednesday the case might be settled when she and the other nine people arrested in the United States appear for arraignment on the indictment, raising the possibility of guilty pleas to the lowest charges and deportation from the U.S.

Prosecutors released a copy of the indictment as federal judges in Boston and Alexandria, Va., signed orders directing that five defendants arrested in Massachusetts and Virginia be transferred to New York. All were charged in Manhattan.

The defendants were accused of living seemingly ordinary lives in America while they acted as unregistered agents for the Russian government, sending secret messages and carrying out orders they received from their Russian contacts.

All have remained in custody except for a man identified as Christopher R. Metsos, the 11th suspect who is charge with being the ring's paymaster. Metsos, travelling on a fake Canadian passport, jumped bail last week after being arrested in Cyprus.

Oh my goodness! Who has beaten you harmfully? Shattered your amusing face? Given you money and aid?
And ordered you to attack all your friends and acquaintances?
Is that not for the weak and silly man?
He answered and said " Yes, that man, the weak and the son of the weak".
They stopped giving him bananas because he repented, and then they cut off the expenses, money and aids from him.
Ultimately, they threw him out, stripped the skin off his body and put him with other skinned people.
